Chapter 250: Life On Line (4)

The Empire forces were now also getting ready for an official offensive. This time, they were determined to reclaim this land that was occupied by the rebels.

Unlike in previous times, the majority of the citizens now support the war against the Ford Domain. As to not seem abrupt for the civilians inside the domain, they also gave out some flyers and announcements that were sneaked out inside to evacuate to much safer places once the offensive and siege began.

This was truly the complicated side of the war; no matter what side, the civilians were still the ones that would be affected the most.

However, Spade couldn’t wait anymore for a better opportunity. The organization, or, as it could be said, the Marquis, was becoming too provocative and unruly.

If the Emperor didn’t respond immediately, how could he face his citizens? The civilians were being used as cannon fodder this time, and it was only a small portion of them as of now. But if this took too long, how many lives would be lost? And perhaps not only abled men and alphas but everyone across genders and generations.

Spade didn’t doubt this conjecture; with how the Marquis moved, there was a high chance this would happen.

So for these few days, Arren and Spade have barely seen each other. The alpha was always in the conference room, coordinating and supervising what was happening on the frontlines as a monarch.

Arren knew that Spade was extremely serious this time. The Empire was not called the Empire for nothing. Their military strength was the best for centuries.

This was still their home ground, and the moment they decided on a full offensive, they were really remaining true to their words.

"Spade," Arren called the alpha’s name. They were having lunch; actually, in the last couple of days, they never had a chance to eat together. But the plan and their forces were more or less gathered, and Spade stole a few minutes of time on his schedule to eat with Arren.

"Mm?" The alpha stared at him and waited.

Arren licked his lips, somehow hesitating. He was quiet for a few seconds before he held Spade’s cuff.

"Did you have to go in the front lines?" he couldn’t help but worry. Spade informed him that he would be on the front lines as well.

Last night, Arren was already apprehensive, and now he was even more so. He just didn’t voice it. He was really worried for Spade; he knew that he was biased toward his lover, but the alpha was the monarch, so there was really no need to be there, and he could just supervise the situation here in the palace.

There might be a lot of guards with him, but it was still war, and that made Arren extremely nervous and worried.

Spade, who anticipated it, sighed. He also didn’t plan to come to the front lines personally; it wasn’t like he would also be fighting there, so it was better that he was here in the palace as a monarch.

However, the sudden turn of events in the past few days had made him no choice but to show his face. This war had become bigger, and the whole empire was invested.

Not to mention, he indeed had to console his citizens and the members of the army personally this time. His being there was also a kind of boost to their morale. After all, the military had been under heavy pressure ever since the organization made civilians cannon fodder.

Being a monarch wasn’t just a symbol and a status; it was accompanied by a huge responsibility. Spade never missed this point.

"Don’t worry, while it is said to be on the front lines, I’m relatively in a safe distance from the battlefield," the alpha tried to comfort him.

Arren looked at Spade; there was still a kind of uneasiness in his heart. He opened his mouth to try and reason, but as he was reminded of his lover’s status, he could only bite his mouth.

He lowered his head, becoming solemn.

"Arren," this time it was Spade who called him in a lower voice. The alpha’s hand reached out, touched his chin, and held his hand.

"Look at me, please?" The alpha’s breath brushed against his neck, and without looking over, he knew that Spade had already leaned close to his face.

He couldn’t resist when Spade gently turned his face toward him. There was still a pout on Arren’s lips; his emotions were completely displayed.

Spade leaned over and kissed the tip of Arren’s nose lovingly. Arren also savored it as he closed his eyes for a moment before opening them again and making eye contact with Spade.

"I promise, I’ll be safe," he muttered gently, looking straight into Arren’s eyes.

Hearing this, despite the uneasiness in his heart, Arren still couldn’t help but relent. He held Spade’s hand and stared through him.

"Make sure of it!" He commanded somehow domineeringly. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

Spade chuckled and nodded his head, showing he understood.

Soon, Arren also leaned forward and kissed Spade, as though sealing the promise. They didn’t care much at this point about the food and satiated each other’s cravings through their lips.

Time passed quickly, and the next day, Spade left the capital. The full offensive and siege were finally happening today.

Although Spade was indeed not in the capital, that didn’t mean he would neglect the security of the capital. Instead, it even increased. The royal guards and even the military could be seen everywhere, and they also barricaded most of the routes in and out of the capital.

The palace had the strictest security, as they patrolled outside.

Spade was not there, so he would only be at ease if his loved one was safe. Especially as Arren was too important for the organization, there was no way they wouldn’t do anything funny as the siege was happening.

Arren stared outside; for some reason, he was still extremely uneasy. He didn’t even know if this was only because he was worried about Spade, the result of this war, or something else entirely.

Biting his lips, Arren sighed. Perhaps this feeling was because of the war and nothing else.

With a last glance outside, he went into the kitchen to cook. He wasn’t only cooking for Spade these days but also for the Mother Empress. There was a day that he would be eating with the empress, but recently, since Spade was busy, Arren often ate together with the empress.

Their relationship was still good, even though the empress still didn’t want to meet Spade. Arren could only say that he was too stubborn.

While outside of the palace there were a lot of guards as their security, inside the palace it was still as quiet as ever. And it was even more so this day that there was an obvious tension in the seemingly silent environment.

Despite all this, the solemnity of the palace halls was preserved.

With two royal attendants with him, Arren pushed the trolley that had the dishes he just cooked. This was deeper in the palace, so the people that could be seen were also scarce.

When he reached the Empress’ room, there were two royal guards present outside who bowed at him. Arren only smiled at them and entered the room.

At his back, the door quietly slammed shut. As Arren greeted the Empress, unbeknownst to them, the danger was quickly approaching.
