The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 29: Weight of a kingdom (2)
Chapter 29: Weight of a kingdom (2)
"If you don’t want to be king just run away by yourself. Why the hell do I need to go with you? Rafael is a knight and has sworn to do what it takes to protect you. Get him to run away with you," said Edgar.
Though Edgar disliked the people in town, he happened to like his home and was not going anywhere anytime soon.
Tobias rested back on his chair. "You’re more boring than I realise. Why wouldn’t you want to go on an adventure with me? We both have enough money to go somewhere far away to start over. We can find somewhere no one knows of us and we won’t have any responsibility. I-"
"Alfred, escort the prince out," Edgar said, tired of hearing this dream Tobias had.
If Tobias did not want to be king, he should make it known to his parents. Let the responsibility be passed onto his uncle or a distant relative. There was nothing Edgar could do for Tobias right now and running away was not going to solve anything.
Edgar wasn’t in the mood to pack up all his things and run away from Tobias’s problem. "Tell them you are giving up your seat and let your uncle become king. Years ago he made a fuss about the throne not going to him. Give it all up and then you can travel as you want."
Tobias looked up at the ceiling. "The problem is that my uncle wouldn’t make a good king. I’d prefer to run away without knowing who they would pick or having to share that I don’t want the weight of the kingdom on my shoulders. It is too much responsibility for me and my parents don’t understand my fears."
"Alfred, bring us a good bottle and have a carriage prepared to leave in an hour," said Edgar, deciding to treat Tobias by giving him something to help him relax and then send him off.
Tobias couldn’t believe that Edgar was still planning on kicking him out of his home. "I take back what I said. You are still heartless. Here I am telling you that I want to leave so I don’t have to be king and all you are doing is giving me a drink before sending me off."
"I am not running away with you. Even if it is just for a day so you can clear your mind. A ride around the town I can allow or for you to stay at my home for a day if you are quiet, but I am not leaving town. We both know that you are not going to run away and leave your father looking for someone to replace you. You are not going to leave your sister worried about you," said Edgar.
He knew Tobias well and knew that Tobias disliked that becoming king he would be even more trapped in the palace, but at the same time, Tobias wouldn’t up and leave because of what would happen in the palace.
Edgar was not going to indulge Tobias in these fantasies of running away when they both knew he was not going to go into hiding. Staying out at war and not returning when he was meant to start the selection was one thing, but running away for good was another. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
Tobias hated that Edgar was right. He couldn’t leave his little sister in the palace nor could he bring her with him. Should he run away, he wouldn’t be coming back to the palace and he could not go without seeing his sister again. Not see his mother or father though they were too busy to understand him these days.
Tobias rubbed his temple. Everything was going great until it came time for him to start preparing to take his father’s place. "I’ll stay because you begged me to. Please do not throw that at me. If you hurt me, the royal army will be at your doors tomorrow."
"You didn’t tell anyone where you were going so how would they know that I killed you? It wouldn’t matter if this would be the first place your mother assumed you ran off to. Enjoy a good bottle and if you are quiet, you can stay for dinner," Edgar offered. It was the least he could do to help Tobias right now.
Edgar hoped the king would pay a little more attention to Tobias to notice his dislike for becoming the next king. Tobias had always disliked being trapped in the palace, viewing it as a big cage. A little advice from his father would help Tobias.
"I can’t stay for dinner. Since you are not going to run away with me, I should return to continue the selection. What do you think of Hazel Wallace?" Tobias questioned.
Edgar should be well acquainted with her because he was always in the palace a lot as a child and his father, Edmund Collins would meet with Hazel’s father from time to time.
"She’s one of the few women I think is worth holding a conversation with. Why? Are you harassing the poor soul?" Edgar asked, curious about why Tobias was suddenly asking about her.
As far as Edgar remembered, Tobias had a love-and-hate relationship with Hazel. Some days Tobias used to say that she was annoying and argued with her and then there were days he noticed Tobias was staring at her as she walked by with her father.
Edgar never cared to figure out what feelings Tobias had for Hazel, but now she was in the selection, he wondered if she was going to be the future queen. He rarely spoke with her because they were never in the same room unless for a ball, but he thought she could make a good queen from what little he remembered.
"Harassing? I have been having a pleasant time with her. I ran into her after you left me at the ball and I am told you didn’t leave alone. Who was the woman you bastard?" Tobias asked, curious as to who Edgar managed to sneak out of the ball with.
"That is none of your concern. Do you have any idea yet who will be our future queen? If it is someone I cannot stomach, do not expect to see me in the palace when you become king. It is bad enough that I must deal with the princess. Hazel is not a bad choice if you still have feelings for-"
"When did I ever have feelings for her?" Tobias asked, confused as to why Edgar thought that. "We argued each time we saw each other in the past. At the ball, she was speaking of me being a flirt and not wanting to take part in the selection."
"You are a whore and I don’t blame her for second-guessing if she wanted to compete to wed you. She should be the one thinking of running away. They all should," Edgar said as Tobias had a personality you needed energy to put up with. "It’s no surprise that you don’t recall trying your best to get a good look at her when she walked by where we played."
"I remember looking at her, but not how you are making it sound. Now I want to see how I looked back then when she was in sight. I’ll take the drink and return to the palace. I promised someone a special arrangement and I don’t want to disappoint her. I need you to be in the palace tomorrow since I made a deal with someone," Tobias said, remembering his deal with Linda.
"No," Edgar answered, not wanting any part in the plans Tobias made with his name.
