The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 36: Feelings (1)
Chapter 36: Feelings (1)
"I am yet to understand what is happening here. There seems to be more to the prince’s relationship with Hazel," said Kathleen, one of the young women taking part in the selection.
Kathleen had been looking forward to the prince having to pick someone else tonight and though there was good competition for who he could pick, she thought she might have a chance. Yet the prince went after someone he already picked early in the day.
It was not fair and should be against the rules for him to pick Hazel twice in one day. Why did it need to be that the prince was only having dinner with one lady tonight? Why not spread his time among two or three women at a time?
Seeing how the selection was going on day one, many of the women would not get to spend time with Tobias.
Jasmine shared the women’s jealousy over Hazel getting to be with the prince again. She didn’t understand why the prince was going for Hazel especially after he showed an interest in Helena.
Jasmine studied Helena who was quiet and not chatting with the friends she made. It seemed that Helena was also confused as to why her sister was getting picked so often. Jasmine would be quiet too if she were in Helena’s position.
Helena was set up to have so much attention on her, but her older sister was once again stealing it from her. Jasmine almost pitied Helena. Still, she had to just this moment to attack Helena.
"Perhaps the prince is looking to make a mockery of someone," Jasmine said, bringing attention to herself. She brought her glass to her lips and took a sip of the wine the palace offered them for a dramatic pause.
"What do you mean?" Kathleen asked, wishing to know more about what Jasmine spoke of. "Who is he trying to make a mockery of by picking Hazel? I hate that she was picked twice but she is a Wallace unless there is something we need to be informed of."
"I think it is strange how he went from dancing with Helena to picking her sister. Doesn’t it feel like someone upset him and now he is picking the woman closest to her? The person who should have something to share is Helena. What happened between her dance at the ball and this morning in the garden?"
Helena wished she could throw her drink and glass Jasmine’s way for bringing attention to her, but that would be what Jasmine was looking for. To have her appear like she was not raised right. It was times like this when Helena wished she could boast about the queen viewing her as a favourite.
Hazel was picked again, but Helena was holding onto the fact the queen liked her. This will all be fixed soon. Helena wanted a moment of peace to think about why the prince was skipping her and going to Hazel but Jasmine had to bring her up to have everyone looking to hear her thoughts on Hazel and the prince.
"Have you nothing better to do than speak of me? If you don’t have something worthy of being shared with the group that can be backed by facts, I suggest that you remain silent. Now is not the time to be coming up with theories," said Helena.
She had done nothing wrong for the prince to be picking her sister to make a mockery of her. Something odd was happening, but this was not the reason. She was yet to figure out how Hazel did it.
Jasmine put her glass down, ready to humble Helena. It had annoyed her how many times she had to hear about Helena during the ball and when it was over. She was told that she needed to push herself to be better than Helena when Jasmine already thought she was.
"I believe the facts are the prince picking your older sister. I wonder what could have possibly gone wrong. Did you think you were already queen and annoyed the prince? I hope you didn’t send him a letter. Or maybe, did the prince realise that you were not a woman capable of amusing him? I mean, you are pretty, but compared to everyone here, you can’t hold a man’s attention," Jasmine said.
Helena knew right away what Jasmine was trying to say. That she was not a woman to entice the prince. Helena could admit that she was not like any of the women rumoured to have had a relationship with the prince in the past, but rather than think negatively, she saw it as something good. Those women weren’t around to have the chance to become queen.
Those women were just for passing time while Helena had the qualities of a great wife and queen. Jasmine didn’t know what was going on inside Tobias’s mind to say that he was not attracted to her therefore he had moved on to Hazel. When they were married, the prince’s attraction to her would grow. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
Helena smiled as it was funny how Jasmine thought she might be able to seduce the prince yet he had not spared her a glance. "Try to argue with someone else to distract yourself from being jealous of me and my sister. I suggest you focus on yourself so you can one day be picked by the prince."
"Jealous of your sister? I am not jealous of Hazel. Only confused as to what she did to get the prince to pick her twice. In this selection, everyone will do all sorts of things that will no longer make them good ladies. I wonder in what way did your sister charm the prince. Is there anything you wish to share with us before another scandal starts?"
Helena closed her mouth, not knowing how to defend Hazel.
"Enough!" Linda exclaimed, tired of hearing the assumptions about why Hazel was with the prince right now. "You should be careful when trying to piece together why the prince is smitten by Hazel. Do not say something your family will have to fight to clear up."
Jasmine frowned, surprised by Linda getting involved. She had forgotten that Linda was here and how close she was to Hazel. "I am only saying what is on everyone’s mind about the prince’s sudden interest in Hazel. You are her best friend so perhaps you will know."
Linda wanted to laugh at Jasmine thinking she would share anything about Hazel. "I would be a fool to share any secrets with you. You are jealous that your family name was not able to give you the attention you seek. You are jealous and looking for any reason to throw dirt on Hazel’s name or find out what she did to have the prince fancy her so you can attempt it."
"You are also still jealous of Helena that you try to bring her name into every conversation. It is pathetic," Linda said, annoyed by how they were looking to spread rumours already. "Keep quiet and await your turn to be with the prince. Hopefully, it shall come."
"You should learn not to speak on something that has nothing to do with you. I had enough," Jasmine said, putting down her glass as she was finished with dinner. She pushed her chair back, creating a loud noise as she stood.
Jasmine was the first to leave and then other women who couldn’t find it in them to eat because they were trying to think of ways to get the prince’s attention followed in leaving.
"They are so frustrating. It is hard to make new friends when they act this way. Helena," Linda said, looking to her right at Helena. "Don’t let them upset you."
"They didn’t, but I am also curious about what my sister has done to get his attention," Helena said, sharing the other’s curiosity. "She has not been-"
"Do not start that because you are jealous it is not you with the prince. You know Hazel. You know what she would and wouldn’t do for anyone. Helena, don’t make me come to hate you for turning on your sister over becoming queen. Sometimes I hate how you are her blood sister, but I act more like it than you do," Linda said as she stood up.
She couldn’t sit here when Helena was about to speak nonsense about Hazel. The one person who knew Hazel better than Linda was Helena. Helena should know that Hazel would not have seduced the prince to be getting this attention. Why was it so hard to believe that the prince liked Hazel?
Linda continued to say, "Before a new day starts in the palace, think about whether becoming queen is worth losing your sister."
