"I do not know how many women you have danced with, but you should be looking at the woman you are dancing with," Siena said, using her hand to turn Rafael’s attention to her. "Are you in love with your maid?"

"That is none of your concern," Rafael replied.

"I didn’t mean to overstep, but since you are here with me and not her, I had to try asking. Am I just a replacement since you could not be seen at this ball with your maid? I have noticed the way you look at her even now when you are in the same room, your eyes go to her like danger would find its way to her should you look away," said Siena.

It hurt to see that the man she was told to focus on so much in her youth was already in love with someone else while she was moulded into the perfect wife for him. She was prepared for as long as she could remember to be the perfect wife for Rafael.

She would have liked the choice like Rafael did to like someone else. Siena spent so much time learning about Rafael that she started to fall for him through the stories she heard.

Siena imagined that coming to see him, she would confess to what Travis was doing, and in the midst of trying to get out of being puppets for Travis, they would fall in love. She spent so much time thinking about Rafael that she didn’t know who else she could devote her time to.

"I didn’t mean to insult her," Siena apologised for her actions with Annalise. She felt jealous in the moment and acted in a way she normally wouldn’t.

Rafael was unaware of their pending engagement and she put herself in Annalise’s shoes to have to stand back and watch the man she liked dance with another woman. Siena felt guilty about making Annalise admit to the fact she would not know how to dance.

Seeing Annalise smile despite the fact she must have felt sad to be reminded of her status was not worth it after it happened. She was to help Rafael keep Annalise safe. Another woman did not need to be caught up in Travis and her father’s plans.

"Did you do it because you are jealous? You are only my partner for the night. Do not stick your nose in the air and hurt her again. I already have enough reason to kill you," said Rafael.

"What?" Siena asked, looking up at him with a mix of shock and confusion. "Why would you want to kill me?"

"Are you not the woman that man thinks I will wed? Do not run," Rafael said, pulling her closer so she could not make an attempt to get away from him. "Has he not told you what happened to the others he sent near my family? Anyone working with that man is considered my enemy. If you are plotting something with him that will have my mother in danger, know that I will take that pretty head of yours and feed it to my dogs."

"Would your mother still love you if I were to send what is left of you to her?" Rafael asked.

Siena could not believe the words coming out of Rafael’s mouth. She tried to step away, but his hold on his waist stopped her. She looked around at the people dancing around them. If she tried to run, she would create a scene. Once people got to talking here, Travis would find out about it. She knew that he had sent men here to keep an eye on her or maybe Rafael.

"That is not funny-"

"I never joke when it comes to my mother," Rafael answered. "Did you delude yourself to think I would just leave you once I found out who sent you? He has sent many people to us over the years to upset my mother. How am I to know you are not a threat to me or my mother? I will kill you if you are."

"This is unlike you," Siena said, feeling that he was taking this too far.

Rafael chuckled, amused by how she was acting like she knew him. "Unlike me? You know nothing about me. Whatever stories you have heard about me are from people who have never met me. Whatever fairytale you created in your head isn’t the truth."

"It is true that I do not know you, but for the last few years as you rose as a commander and everyone speaks of you, Rafael Callahan is all that I hear. I would very much like to be like my peers to go to balls like this and gush over men. To have someone unexpected ask for my hand and I fall in love. I would love that choice, but instead, I am to prepare myself to be the wife you would want," Siena revealed.

"I know you will not believe my words, but I am not here to hurt you or your family. I admire your mother for choosing what she wanted and running away. I don’t have the strength to do that. My father and your uncle really want our union to work so I am to do as I am told. I always thought that if you turned down the offer, we could work together so I would be free."

"How were we to work together if I had not mentioned it, you would not have admitted to why you are showing up where I am?" Rafael asked. He doubted Wendy had any ties to Travis so when they were at her home, Siena had plenty of time to tell him the truth.

Siena looked off to the side. "I have to be careful. Your uncle is the one to send me here to stay with Lady Everett so he must already have his followers here. I have never been here so I try to be careful where I speak. I kept it a secret from him that you have feelings for your maid. Despite my jealousy just now, I don’t want something to happen to her."

"If you want my help to get you out of an engagement that would never happen, you would need to prove yourself useful. I will never trust you," Rafael revealed since he would be a fool to trust someone sent by Travis. "But you can get the information I need and I will help free you."

Travis wasn’t going to be alive for long. The only problem Rafael faced was Tobias calling him to the palace to deal with the border. It interrupted taking care of Travis.

"If you pretend to meet with me as if we have fallen in love, I can get you any information you may need. I am the daughter of the man your mother was to marry and I am quite certain that your uncle intends to kill your mother. He keeps telling me that I don’t need to think about a future with her in it. I am also certain that he has men here to watch you and your family. I want out of this as much as you do," Siena said.

There was no point in continuing to force herself to love him when he already loved someone else. She could only hope there would be someone to look at her the same way in the future.

Just as the dance came to an end, Siena tip-toed to kiss Rafael on his lips. A goodbye to the feelings she forced herself to have for him.

Rafael stepped away from her looked where he left Annalise to see just in time that she was walking away. He let go of Siena since he got the confirmation that she was who he assumed her to be and started to follow Annalise before she would become lost.
