Chapter 259: Judging (2)

Beatrice was in shock at how Annalise boldly attacked the man when he came at them. She stood up from the chair she sat in, wanting to find a way to help Annalise get the sword out of the man’s hand before someone could be injured by it.

Siena was already trying to grab the sword to stop the attempt to stab Annalise with it. Beatrice joined her to wrestle the sword out of his hands as Annalise held him down.

Kayla panicked upon seeing Siena in a dangerous situation and her first instinct was to pull Siena away from the danger. These men worked for Travis so they wouldn’t hurt Siena. The two of them could leave.

"My lady," Kayla said, trying to pull Siena away from helping to pin down the stranger. Siena was not wild like Annalise to get involved with this man. She was a lady. "Let go of him and come with me."

Siena stumbled backwards because of Kayla pulling on her. Luckily, Beatrice was there to keep trying to get the sword out of his hand.

Annalise gritted her teeth, ignoring the pain of his right hand hitting her face and instead of punching him, she used both of her hands to dig her nails into his skin. His screams soon filled the room and his grip on the sword loosened.

Annalise continued to dig deeper into the skin around his eyes and drag her hands down to claw at more of his face.

Seeing what Annalise was doing, Siena sat back in shock that Annalise could do such a thing. Beatrice was also surprised by how Annalise did it and didn’t bat an eye at the man pulling on her hands, leaving marks as he tried to get Annalise away from his eyes.

Annalise knew that she could not overpower him long even though she was on top of him and she couldn’t bear any more of the marks he was leaving on her body so she looked around for the sword and found it in Beatrice’s hands, but she also noticed a dagger at the side of his pants so she went for that instead.

The unknown man tried to reach out to grab Annalise with his right hand while his left hand covered his wounded left eye. He was going to see to it that he was able to keep this one to himself to make her feel pain for what she did to him.

Annalise was pulled forward because of him grabbing her shoulder and digging his fingers into her skin, but there wasn’t much pain thanks to his lack of fingernails.

Annalise managed to take out the dagger and plunged it into his chest immediately. She listened to the sound of him groaning as she pulled on the dagger to take it out and then plunged it back into him again and again until he stopped fighting her.

"Finally," Annalise sighed in relief, letting go of the dagger now that the man hardly moved. She slid off of him and sat on the floor to calm herself and prepare for another attack.

Yelling could be heard outside the room, but it was mostly Logan’s voice which meant the other men might have been taken care of.

Annalise looked at Beatrice and noticed the shock mixed with fear all over her face. Annalise couldn’t tell who Beatrice feared more. "Are you alright, Beatrice? Did the sword injure when you pull at it-"

"I do not understand you. How have they let someone like you become his maid?" Kayla asked, holding Siena close to stop her from going near Annalise.

"Someone like me? I just stopped him from hurting any of us," Annalise said, reminding Kayla of the danger they faced not more than a minute ago.

"You took his life without a second thought and don’t seem shaken up about it as you have done it before. I do not understand why they keep you around. You are like a wild animal," said Kayla.

Annalise released a dry laugh and tried to calm her anger over the word wild. Why was she to regret killing someone who would kill them without a second thought? Annalise ignored Kayla and looked at Beatrice once more.

Beatrice’s silence worried Annalise. Not because she thought Beatrice was injured, but because she took Beatrice’s silence as her being shaken up by her killing the man. She followed Beatrice’s gaze down to her hands which had the blood on them.

Annalise placed her hands to the sides of her to hide them right as River returned with Logan right behind him.

River looked at the man on the floor, confused by how someone managed to get by them and how he was dead. Before asking about the man, he went to Beatrice’s side to check on her.

With everyone safe at the moment, Annalise stood up to leave the room which was starting to feel smaller the longer she stayed in it. She didn’t want to stick around to hear more about her being like a wild animal when she did what she did to keep Beatrice safe.

Aside from River checking on Beatrice, the room was awfully quiet with Siena and Kayla staring at her.

"Annalise," Logan said, stopping her from leaving when he noticed the blood on her hands. His mind instantly went to thinking that she was hurt and it was her blood. "Let me see your hand. Now is not the time for you to get angry with me," he said, lifting her hands to check for a wound after she stopped trying to leave.

Logan found the wound from when she pushed the sword away. "Why is there so much blood?" He asked, finding the amount on her hand to be too much for the wound. Logan did not let go of Annalise as he stepped further into the room to look at the dead man and finally saw the dagger standing tall in his chest. Now he knew where the blood came from. "You killed him?"

"Yes, I did. My hands are fine. I only need to wash off the blood," Annalise said, pulling her hands out of Logan’s hold so she could leave to find water. When the blood was gone, maybe then everyone would start acting normal. How was she any different from the knights with what she did?

Annalise exited the room and was greeted by the mess at the front of the shop. There was blood on the floor and two of the knights were dragging a body outside. When the door opened, she got a glimpse of the town guards standing outside with a small crowd gathering.

"Of course, they are here at the end-" Annalise paused, startled by someone suddenly embracing her from behind.

"I’m a little late, but thank you," Beatrice said, hugging Annalise tighter as the seconds passed. She went into shock seeing Annalise kill the man and as much as she wanted to open her mouth to ask Annalise if she was okay, her mouth didn’t listen to her mind.

When Kayla started to speak about Annalise, she wanted to speak up and tell the girl to hush, but a terrible memory which reminded her of the danger she was in not long ago, affected her.

Annalise looked down at Beatrice’s hands which were trembling. She listened to Beatrice’s shaky breathing and knew that she was still trying to process what happened. Annalise appreciated that she did not have to go on overthinking Beatrice’s opinion of her now after she killed a man with no remorse.

"You are not late, Beatrice. You came just in time," Annalise said as her mind was about to take her to a place of having bad thoughts about how she should know they would all look at her like she was some sort of monster one day. Beatrice rid her of those fears with a single hug.
