Chapter 363: The past (1)

"Breakfast was lovely, wasn’t it? I don’t know how I feel about Annalise and River going off to the yard to show each other how they use a sword, but they are bonding. It’ll be great if everyone could continue to get along when we meet her family," Beatrice said, thinking of a gift for Annalise’s mother though she didn’t know when they would meet in the future.

To get Annalise’s father to take a liking to them, Beatrice decided to get close to Annalise’s mother first.

"Her mother reminds me of you. It is only her father who isn’t thrilled about our relationship. Annalise is still his little girl," said Rafael.

"That isn’t surprising. If I had a daughter, I would find it hard to let her go. You’ve been all over the kingdom doing dangerous things so I don’t worry about you getting married. That is the least of my problems. Your father and I will be going home today. I don’t want to impose on your time with Annalise," Beatrice said, hooking her arm with Rafael’s as they walked.

"You are not disturbing us," Rafael said.

Normally he wouldn’t be happy to see his parents constantly visiting right after he returned, but now, he didn’t mind it. With his mother close, he knew that she was safe and he could keep an eye on what his father was up to with Travis.

"You are trying to be kind, but I was your age once. Eventually, you would want me out of your hair so you and Annalise could be more comfortable. That is the purpose of you having your own home. I hope that when I am not around, there aren’t any more accidents like her getting slapped. It upsets me each time I think about that happening to her," said Beatrice.

Beatrice thought of giving the maids another talk, but Mavis seemed to have become stricter and she needed to allow Annalise to take care of these problems in the future. She had to start now since life was only going to get crazier from here.

"Not everything needs to be resolved with violence. I don’t want people to think she doesn’t know how to act. When will you start expanding the manor? From my walk with your father, it didn’t look like they got far," Beatrice said, stopping to look out one of the windows. "So much has changed here since I first arrived." freewebnøvel.coɱ

"I’ve stopped the expansion because I plan to be closer to the border. Annalise has a lot of responsibilities that she can’t travel back and forth from. The best option is for me to go there. I will try to have more homes built for the knights with families who might want to move," Rafael said, looking down at the view of the yard where Annalise sat watching his father.

"Is there a town near the border?" Beatrice asked as she wasn’t sure of what near the border was like. Whenever it was brought up it was always about war so she wouldn’t be interested in hearing about it. She didn’t want to hear about war from her husband or son and then when she was trying to enjoy her time with her friends.

"There isn’t a town so slowly we will build up one. Once it is declared that the border is safe, some people might move there for a new life. People from the border might move closer to mix the two kingdoms. More couples like me and Annalise might be willing to go there so they don’t have to hide," Rafael explained.

"Well, that means your father and I will have to touch a bit of the money we were saving. I can’t be far away from my future grandchildren. Wait, I have never thought about it until now. If Annalise is to replace her father as leader, does that make her a queen and you a king? My son will be a king," Beatrice gasped, touching her chest.

"I don’t think that how it-"

"Hush and let me dream," Beatrice said, playfully tapping his arm. "This town has lost its touch so I don’t mind moving. My brother has ruined what I liked about it and quite frankly, I don’t want to hear what anyone will say about Annalise when they find out. She’s too good for this town. Your father still keeps up with the young men," Beatrice said, leaning closer to the window to get a better look at River showing the knights how a fight was done.

"I thought you hated to see him fighting. You used to stay inside to avoid watching him, but if you did, you would tell him to be careful," said Rafael. He hoped Annalise wasn’t starting to rub off on her. He could only handle one woman in his life enjoying watching a fight. It was already hard to keep track of Annalise.

"I can still acknowledge that the man is handsome while showing you young men how to fight like a knight. Look at me getting distracted when I promised to tell you about my past with Travis. First, did he say anything about me when the two of you talked?" Beatrice asked, stepping away from the window so they could keep walking.

Beatrice didn’t know where they were going just as long as she didn’t stay still.

"Only that my attitude makes him think you didn’t get me a tutor. That was my fault. You sent me to school and I ran off to Lockwood to play around with Edgar and Tobias," said Rafael.

"Of course, he would mention tutors. He always liked to boast that we had the best tutors growing up. He didn’t even like the tutors and used to be mean to them because they could not fight back. Our father would believe Travis and send the tutors away. I don’t think the tutors were sad when they were fired. They looked happy to rush out of our home," Beatrice said, recalling how one practically ran to the door.

"Servants were like toys for Travis since they worked for our family. We were spoiled as long as we believed well in my father’s eyes or did something to outshine his peer’s children. Other than wanting to be with your father, I can’t remember a time when my father said no to me. My father helped to create the little monster Travis is with him thinking he should always get what he wanted," said Beatrice.

"I’ve witnessed it. I thought there was something wrong with his head for him to think I would come to a party he is hosting because he sent an invitation," Rafael said, still thinking Travis was crazy, but he would add spoiled to it.

"He has our family’s connections at his fingers to get everything he wants. I sometimes call him a fool, but he isn’t. He had the best of everything. The best fighters to teach him how to fight. The best tutors to school him. He truly is dangerous," Beatrice said, needing Rafael to remember this and not think her brother was easy to defeat.

Travis was cocky because he could fight.

"Travis and I were like normal siblings in the beginning. He had no reason to hate me so much because I was well-behaved. He did try to get me to take part in messing with our tutors and when I didn’t, he would get upset, but not hurt me. That changed when I started to question if an arranged marriage was what I wanted," Beatrice said, squeezing Rafael’s hand as she was going back down a part of her life she liked to forget.
