Yaduo was getting older and her health was deteriorating; she didn’t know how many more years she could live, or if she would be able to witness the birth of Yelu Yan and Li Xianyun’s child.

Previously, Yaduo had hoped that Yelu Yan would marry soon and had no other desires. Now that Yelu Yan and Li Xianyun were married, she looked forward to them having children soon.

Humans are never truly content.

Yaduo said with a smile, "This old woman knows this saying all too well, but it must never be spoken of outside. Ayan is so fond of Xianxian that he would not tolerate others gossiping."

The maid laughed in response, "This servant understands and cherishes her own life dearly, daring not to speak carelessly."

Yaduo chuckled, "Your boldness is growing, indeed as if you wish no longer to live."

With that said, both of them burst into laughter.

When Yelu Yan returned to the Khan Palace, he heard laughter coming from the main building before he even arrived.

It turned out that Yuchi Qian and Yelu Xuan were there.

Upon seeing Yelu Yan, Yuchi Qian and Yelu Xuan quickly restrained their laughter and hurriedly stood up to pay their respects.

"Rise," he said.

As he walked over to Li Xianyun, Yelu Yan wrapped his arm around her slender waist, barely encircling it, glanced at her, and then turned his gaze to Yuchi Qian.

"Why does the Princess Consort of the Sixth Prince find time to visit the Khan Palace today?" he asked.

Yuchi Qian replied respectfully, "To answer the Khan, Xuanxuan has been clamouring to see the Queen for the past few days, so this humble wife brought her along."

Since the Queen’s coronation ceremony, Yelu Xuan had not seen Li Xianyun and missed her terribly every day.

Knowing that Li Xianyun was busy, Yuchi Qian had sent an invitation in advance, and they had agreed to meet today.

That being so, Yelu Yan did not speak further.

He didn’t have much to say to anyone other than Li Xianyun.

Li Xianyun saw Yuchi Qian and said with a smile, "You are with child now and must not tire yourself – please sit down."

Yuchi Qian curtsied and was about to sit down with Yelu Xuan, but seeing that Yelu Yan and Li Xianyun were still standing, she stood up again.

The hall, once filled with joy and laughter, became solemn and tense with Yelu Yan’s arrival.

Although Yelu Xuan had acknowledged Yelu Yan as her godfather, she was still very nervous and scared in his presence.

There were few in the world who weren’t afraid of Yelu Yan.

Seeing this, Li Xianyun looked up at Yelu Yan and said, "My lord, don’t you have official matters to attend to? Please go ahead."

She was clearly sending him away.

Yelu Yan said softly, "Fine, I will deal with public duties, but..."

"But you must come back early, I have something to tell you."

His words were cut short by Li Xianyun, "My lord, please go ahead."

She knew what Yelu Yan wanted to say. If Yuchi Qian heard such words from Yelu Yan, she would certainly leave on the spot. But they had only just met and there was still much to discuss.

Yelu Yan had no choice but to hold his tongue and made his way to the study.

After Yelu Yan had left, Yuchi Qian said with a laugh, "The Khan and the Queen really share a great affection for each other."

Li Xianyun directed the conversation elsewhere with a smile.

Yuchi Qian was perceptive and, after Yelu Yan’s return, she didn’t stay long before taking Yelu Xuan and leaving.

Li Xianyun had wanted to invite them to dine together, but Yuchi Qian firmly refused.

So, Li Xianyun let them leave only after giving Yelu Xuan two wooden toys she had made by hand.

Once the two had left, Li Xianyun went to the study.

At that moment, Yelu Yan was sitting at his desk, reviewing memorials. Seeing Li Xianyun come in, he pushed the capacious Taishi Chair back a bit to make room for her in front of his legs, beckoning her over.

Li Xianyun walked over with a smile, and as he had indicated, sat directly on his lap.

Yelu Yan planted a kiss on Li Xianyun’s rosy cheek, with one arm encircling her slender waist and the other taking her delicate hand, gently kneading it in his palm while his rough thumb caressed it.

"He’s gone?"

"Yes, the minute that menacing specter came back, they got frightened and ran off, didn’t they?"

Yelu Yan laughed and said, "I didn’t say anything, nor did I do anything—it was their own decision to leave. I am truly wronged."

Li Xianyun "hmphed."

Enveloping her in his embrace, Yelu Yan chuckled, "My darling, let me kiss you, I’ve missed you."

As he spoke, he pulled Li Xianyun close into his arms.

Li Xianyun obediently nestled against his chest.

This man had become so mushy, constantly calling her "my darling."

Just as Yelu Yan was about to lean down to kiss Li Xianyun’s lips, he suddenly paused, and a murderous intent surged in his eyes.

The next moment, he picked up the writing brush from the desk and quickly flicked it out with a smooth and decisive motion.

Instantly, someone outside the window grunted and fell to the ground.

An assassin.

Yelu Yan looked down at Li Xianyun, who had gone somewhat pale from this unexpected turn of events.

"Fear not with me here, alright?"

Li Xianyun nodded.

Soon thereafter, the noise of the guards apprehending the person came from outside the window.

After a brief period, footsteps sounded outside the door.

Li Xianyun quickly stood up and positioned herself behind Yelu Yan.

Just as she had stood up, Jinwu’s voice came from outside, "This subordinate has come late; I beg the Khan and the Queen’s forgiveness."

Yelu Yan spoke blandly, "Where’s the assassin?"

Jinwu replied respectfully, "Reporting to the Khan, the assassin has been captured."

"Bring him in."

Jinwu, along with another guard, dragged in a man.

Li Xianyun widened her eyes in shock upon seeing the man—it was Scarface, the very man who had almost killed her, a subordinate of the Ninth Prince.

Ever since Li Xianyun had revealed Scarface’s existence, Yelu Yan had ordered his capture, but they had not expected him to be hiding right under their noses, inside the Khan Palace.

Scarface’s shoulder was drenched in blood, with the broken shaft of the writing brush sticking straight into the flesh.

Observing the gruesome wound, Li Xianyun understood.

Yelu Yan was a master of martial arts, and killing was but the work of a moment for him; sparing the life of this assassin clearly had a significant purpose.

Yelu Yan looked coldly at Scarface, "Your hatred for me stems only from your conviction that I am the murderer who massacred your family."

Scarface glared back fiercely at Yelu Yan, "Isn’t that the case?"

Weren’t the scars on his face inflicted by men sent by Yelu Yan?

"Yelu Yan, a real man dares to do what he does and stand by it. Having done such deeds, yet you don’t dare to admit it, why act like a coward hiding his head?!"

"A coward hiding his head?" Yelu Yan said coolly, "You think you’re worthy of making me act like that?"

Scarface was at a loss for words and stopped talking.

At the mercy of Yelu Yan, his very life was in Yan’s hands, and there was indeed no need for Yan to beat around the bush or deceive him.

Yelu Yan continued, "I really do pity you, all these years devoting yourself to the very people who seek your vengeance without realizing it."

"What do you mean?" Scarface said with red-rimmed eyes.

"There are rumors of a sword fighter in the northwestern region of the Khitan, known for his precise blade work and exceptional martial arts. But the man was so devoted to his elderly parents, he wouldn’t travel far from home. As a result, the Ninth Prince, despite his once great favor, sent for the swordsman multiple times without success."

"Thus, the Ninth Prince followed his Counselors’ suggestion and one night had his men wipe out the swordsman’s entire family and blamed me for the deed."
