Chapter 212: Ch 212: It’s finally Over- Part 3

Noah and Nora stood silently as they watched their mother’s expression change the moment Dr. Aldric left. Her usual calm mask slipped.

"Bastard! Arrogant, scheming—"

She muttered under her breath, her voice laced with anger.

Her words trailed off as she noticed Noah and Nora standing nearby. Her eyes widened slightly, and she immediately schooled her expression.

The anger vanished, replaced by a blank, unreadable face. But it was too late. The twins had already seen it.

Not that their mother was trying to hide her real self. She mostly just posed as a good mother and a calm lady for the news and media.

Her real persona was too different from her public image.

"Come. Your father is waiting."

She said, her voice softer now, though a hint of tension still lingered.

The twins knew their mother well, so they also knew that there was no one else in their mother’s gaze other than their father.

So, there was no point in trying to fight for her affection either, especially since the twins knew that their mother was incapable of it.

Noah and Nora followed her quietly.

"Be on your best behavior. Your father is... not in a good mood these days."

Lady Vale added as they walked.

That made both twins tense up.

They exchanged a glance. Their father’s bad mood was never a good thing.

When they finally reached their father’s study, Lady Vale pushed the door open and gestured for them to enter.

Lord Vale sat at his desk, his expression as cold and calculating as ever. His sharp gaze settled on them immediately, making the air in the room feel heavier.

"Sit." frёewebηovel.cѳm

He ordered.

Noah and Nora obeyed without a word. That single word felt like shackles, dragging the twins forward and not giving them any choice in this matter.

Even their mother seemed to be affected with the way she moved to sit down beside them.

Their father didn’t speak right away. He let the silence stretch, his gaze assessing them. Finally, he spoke.

"I have a special mission for both of you.

He said, his tone leaving no room for argument.

Noah’s stomach dropped.

"Do not mess this up. As you know, I am not fond of second chances, and you have been doing too much recently without approval."

Lord Vale continued, his gaze narrowing.

Nora’s jaw clenched slightly, but she kept her expression neutral.

"Yes, Father."

They both murmured.

Their mother stepped forward, her hands clasped in front of her. Her voice was calm, but Noah noticed the slight tremor in her words.

"They won’t fail. They are perfect. You’ve invested too much into them."

She said softly.

Her words were meant to reassure, but there was an edge of nervousness beneath her composed tone.

Lord Vale’s eyes narrowed.

"They’d better be."

He said coldly.

Without another word, he picked up a file from his desk and handed it to Nora.

"Read it."

He instructed.

Nora took the file, her fingers brushing against the smooth surface. But before she could even glance at the contents, Lady Vale was already pulling her and Noah back toward the door.

"Let’s go."

She murmured, her voice tight.

Noah barely had time to exchange a quick glance with Nora before they were ushered out of the study.

The door closed behind them with a quiet thud.

Noah’s heart pounded in his chest.

Whatever was in that file...

It wasn’t going to be good.

Selene sat on her bed, her mind racing.

She was trying to piece together fragments of her memory from the dungeon.

Bits and pieces floated through her mind—strange rooms, illusions, and that overwhelming feeling of being watched.

However, no matter how hard she tried, some memories just wouldn’t come back.

A soft knock on her door pulled her out of her thoughts.

"Come in."

Selene called, her voice quiet.

Zara walked in, her steps hesitant. Selene’s sharp eyes immediately noticed something was off. Zara’s usual confidence was missing. Her posture was a little stiff, and her expression was guarded.

"Hey...What’s wrong?"

Selene said softly.

"Nothing."

Zara said quickly, forcing a smile.

Selene didn’t buy it.

"Sit...And don’t tell me it’s nothing."

She said, patting the spot beside her on the bed.

Zara hesitated for a moment before finally sitting down. She gave Selene a small nod of thanks and then, to Selene’s surprise, lay down beside her.

Silence settled between them.

Minutes passed, but Zara still hadn’t said anything.

Selene waited patiently, giving her friend space. But after ten minutes of silence, she finally spoke.

"Zara, why are you here? What’s wrong?"

Selene murmured softly.

Zara let out a quiet sigh.

"It’s nothing important..."

Selene gave her a look.

Zara bit her lip, her hesitation clear. But then, after a moment, her defenses crumbled.

"I’ve just... been thinking about my family lately..."

Zara admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Selene frowned.

"Your family?"

Zara nodded, her gaze fixed on the ceiling.

"I was never really close to them, but... I don’t even know if they’re still alive."

She said softly.

Selene’s heart clenched.

Zara’s voice grew quieter.

"You and Ethan... You both come from high-profile families. It’s easy to check on them, to know if they’re safe. But my family... they’re just... average."

Her voice cracked slightly.

"I have no idea where they are. Or if they’re even okay."

Selene’s chest tightened. She could hear the pain in Zara’s voice.

Selene wanted to offer help. She wanted to promise Zara that they’d find her family. But she couldn’t. Not yet. She didn’t have the time or the resources to search for them.

So instead, Selene did the only thing she could.

She gently reached over and took Zara’s hand.

"I’m here."

Selene said softly.

Zara’s eyes filled with unshed tears, but she quickly blinked them away.

"Thank you."

She whispered, her voice barely audible.

Selene gave her hand a gentle squeeze, offering silent comfort.

For now, that was all she could do.
