Alix had seven pairs of heels in different colors that she thought would match her dress lined up. A hopeless look settled in her eyes as she couldn’t decide which ones she wanted to wear to the inauguration.

She wanted to be comfortable in case there was dancing involved, or walking around to meet and greet guests. Apart from comfortable, they needed to look beautiful and elegant. But then, there was the cold weather to consider which made her want to go for boots or closed heels so that she wouldn’t freeze.

All the shoes she had lined up were new, and she had just removed them from their boxes. All had been selected by her mother-in-law and none were suitable for her simple job as a teacher because they were too expensive.

She lifted her head and looked at the phone as the voice call had been changed to a video call.

"Mother, it’s so hard." she complained. "Half of them are not comfortable. I am not used to wearing anything taller than three inches."

Alix thought that if she had to prance around in five and six inch heels, she would collapse and fall over like a rusted iron tower.

"Should we just buy you new shoes for tomorrow?" Grandma Tai chipped in.

Mo Qilu fell in love with grandma Tai’s suggestion and built on the suggestion. "We can get pumps or sandals with a flat heel. I know the perfect place we should go to. Xixi, are you available tomorrow or should i just buy and bring the shoes to you when we meet up at the venue?"

Alix looked at the shoes with pointed heels and nodded. Auntie Mo’s suggestion was much better. It would save her time and since she had sent a picture of her dress, auntie Mo would pick the best shoes.

She smiled at the phone and said, still coquettishly, "Mother, grandma, thank you."

"What’s a mother for if not to save her daughter in emergencies?" Auntie Mo answered.

"We should hang up before your grandfather decides to keep you on the phone for the next two hours crying about your father’s painting." Grandma Tai giggled and she said, "He has forbidden Heng from hanging it in the living room. Apparently all the space has been reserved for his painting, whenever it will be ready."

"Ho! grandfather is so tough." Alix replied. She left out the word petty.

"He is coming, bye pretty baby..." Auntie Mo whispered, she waved at Alix and ended the call quickly.

Alix found it both amusing and cute that they thought grandpa Tai simply wouldn’t give her a call if he really wanted to talk to her.

She changed into a simple long white dress, threw on a thick sweater and a pair of stockings, then left the bedroom. Everyone was sitting around the dining table when she arrived. They were not eating yet and it seemed, they waiting for her.

"I am sorry, i had an important call to answer." she announced. "What were you all discussing so spiritedly?

"Sister, the chicken and the egg, which one came first?" Yuewei asked her, loudly and lively.

When she looked around at all the faces at the table, she realized that this was what they were discussing, all of them, including Caishen and Bo.

"It was the egg." Bo said surely.

"The chicken." Caishen insisted.

"Egg." Bo repeated.

"Chicken." Alix said.

Yuewei and Wu Gang bumped their fists together. It seemed they were on team chicken.

Zhang Bo was unconvinced. He shook his head in refusal and said, "She is only saying yes because you said chicken and she is your wife so she supports you blindly in everything."

Alix recalled the few times when she was in high school and a few people raised this the chicken and the egg, which came first conundrum. It was one that never had any winners or losers because no side accepted loss. She had always been on the side of the chicken.

"The chicken laid the egg." Alix told him, "This is science, we cannot argue with science."

"But where did the chicken come from?" Wu Wei asked her.

"Thank you." Bo applauded and clapped while sending an appreciative glance to Wu Wei. "It came from the egg, the egg came first."

"So who laid the egg?" Yuewei asked.

Zhang Bo groaned and hit his head lightly on the table. Alix watched with a smile on her face because this was exactly what she expected, nobody was going to win or lose.

"This is like chicken or fish or a menu. Just pick a side and stick to it." Caishen told his brother.

"The internet says it was the egg." Bo informed his brother. "Aren’t you the facts and science guy. You should be on our side, the egg side."

Caishen shrugged and replied, "I will believe it when i see a video of the very first egg and a chicken being hatched from it. There are some things brother which you just believe with your eyes closed."

"I believe chicken are descended from dinosaurs." Bo told him.

"T-rex." Wu Gang said.

Everyone at the table went still, especially Alix. This was the first time Wu Gang was saying something loudly since moving here. Usually he just whispered to Wu Wei or Yuewei.

"Wu Gang..." Alix croaked out.

She noticed that Wu Wei was shaking his head. He had a finger on his lips, telling her not to say anything. So, she clamped her lips shut and simply smiled at Wu Gang. She was feeling a little emotional however and she decided to step away.

"Excuse me, i am going to the kitchen."

As she was walking to the kitchen, she heard Caishen telling Wu Gang to defend his answer. She paused her feet and waited until she heard Wu Gang speaking up.

In her mind, she heard the system suggest.

"You should start him on the healing crystals immediately. The boy seems to be smart, just a little introverted."

Alix smiled and continued to the kitchen, fully aware of the little feet that were running after her. Xiaobo as always preferred to be with her wherever she was. Her lips curved upwards even more and she hoped that there would be many more nights like these for their small family.

In a private hospital room, Alix’s name was being cursed meanwhile by none other than Billi. Doctors had put both of her arms in casts and attached supportive devices because they couldn’t tell how the bones had just shattered completely. They had become soft to the touch and Billi’s arms were limp like soggy noodles.

Billi had been crying since she arrived at the hospital, and she had yet to stop.

"Mother, if that wretched thing doesn’t agree to bring over the medicine which treated her fingers, kill her. Just kill her and be done with it. She did this to me somehow, it’s her fault."

A doctor that had just entered the room to sedate Lin Billi heard what she said and he gave Jing Hee a questioning side eye. Were they seriously plotting murder or was this angry talk from a patient that was feeling hopeless?

"Mother, tell the hotel manager that i want the cat and snake which caused this. I am going to break their bones, rip out their eyes, skin them and...."

"Sedate her, what are you waiting for?" Lin Qianfan barked at the doctor sternly.
