Chapter 648: Scarlet meets wisdom.

Her head tilted upwards and her eyes searched the skies. Something in that scream called to her, tugged on her heartstrings and stirred the children in her womb.

She winced and placed a hand on her stomach. That scream couldn’t be good if it made even the children uncomfortable.

"That didn’t sound good." she looked at Severus. "Did you hear it?"

He was looking around as well with apprehensive eyes. Who or what had been captured in the underworld? It sounded like it had come from the direction of the palace of the old deity. "I did."

Scarlet felt a sharp pain over her heart and her hand moved from her stomach to her heart. It was like she had been stung by ten thousand bees at the same time.

"Oh god this must be what a heart attack feels like." she groaned.

A bell rung in Severus’s mind, going off like a warning that required one to perhaps run and seek safety.

"Your bond," he whispered and then loudly he said with surity. "It’s your bond."

Severus was more than certain about this fact. They were in the underworld, Nyx had to be somewhere here and the bond was reacting to him. However, the bond had been established with human Esong who was in the human world so why would it react with Nyx, the reaper here in the underworld? Severus was confused and it caused him to howl.

Immediately, as if responding to his howl, two deities appeared, Lythia and Wisdom. Scarlet recognized Lythia but she didn’t recognize Wisdom. Severus had been around much longer than Scarlet so he recognized wisdom.

Lythia put her hand over Scarlet’s heart and the bond shattered, disconnecting her from Esong immediately.

In disbelief, Severus looked at the female deity and asked, "What have you done?"

"The children, they don’t like it." she answered coldly. She looked at Scarlet and said, "Sorry for the abrupt way I cut it off but it had to be done. How are you feeling?"

Even though Scarlet was feeling better, she shot a hot angry glare at the deity. Whether the bond was necessary or useful was up to her decide, not any deity. She was tired of all their bullshit, wanting to control her and the children. It was time to begin taking a stand.

"I like you Lythia, and I appreciate the closeness between us but this will absolutely be the last time you take liberties with anything that concerns me without discussing it with me."

Her eyes were glowing green, with a reflection of her flame. It almost looked like they would burst and the flames would come out exploding and refining everything within reachable distance. It wasn’t just the eyes but the way she was positioning her hands, palms facing out.

And then there was her aura, dark and menacing, frightening even to a deity.

Lythia backed away from Scarlet, taking three steps back. Those flames always made her wary, like something lurking in the depth of her shadows which even she didn’t want to know about.

Feeling like she was within safe escaping distance, Lythia told Scarlet. "I apologize, I guess I got carried away."

"I want my bond back." Scarlet told her.

Wisdom felt like this was the wrong time to step in but he also couldn’t help it. The unifying process was beginning to work and then Scarlet showed up in the realm with her bond and the two personalities split apart.

Lythia claimed it was for the children but it wasn’t. It was for Nyx and Esong. They didn’t need to be fighting when they should be uniting. If the unification process didn’t take, both man and reaper would be destroyed.

Wisdom turned on his boyish charm, stood in front of Scarlet and smiled. "It’s about time we meet, Scarlet."

"Who are you?" she answered.

Her voice had taken on a deepness when she was warning Lythia and she maintained it when she was questioning wisdom.

"I am the deity of wisdom." He raised one of his hands and tapped the right side of his temple three times with a proud smile on his face.

Scarlet folded her hands across her chest and sneered at him. "Aah, you are that useless and foolish deity that abandoned his world and allowed all sorts of demons and ugly things to come and live comfortably among the humans. I have been looking for you."

Wisdom’s mouth fell open.

Lythia smiled and closed Wisdom’s mouth for him. He was now meeting Scarlet, the real her and not the one he had been hearing about in stories. Not that most of the stories were positive anyway because her reputation was not necessarily the best.

Suddenly, wisdom started jumping around like a monkey, or a child throwing a tantrum. "Useless and foolish! You call me the god of wisdom foolish?"

Scarlet frowned and looked at Severus with doubts in her mind. Was this it? Was this really the deity of wisdom? He was more childlike than he should be. Even his looks were boyish, cute, charming perhaps and nothing about them screamed, ’I am wise.’ She had been expecting a wise old man as many books on earth depicted.

"You are supposed to be the great god of wisdom?" Scarlet questioned him.

Wisdom calmed himself down, choosing to discard his less than appropriate behavior. He just hadn’t been called foolish before and that’s why he had reacted in such a manner.

He pointed at Scarlet and warned her. "You should watch your words."

"And you should do your duty." she replied. "Do you even know what duty is? It’s a moral obligation, a responsibility. You are one irresponsible deity." She shook her head in disapproval. "You look more like deceit than wisdom."

Wisdom’s face twisted unhappily. His face actually twitched as he held back his anger. He assured himself that it was okay and she was not the first creature in existence to undermine him. But, why couldn’t she see reason and speak politely? No wonder Nyx liked her, they were both equally unpleasant and rude.

"I should be the wise one here and take the high road." he told himself. Again, however, he reacted in an unexpected way beyond his control. He stomped his right foot and said, "I don’t want to talk to her anymore, she cannot be reasoned with." He vanished away immediately after glaring at Scarlet.

Lythia, Scarlet and Severus were left behind, standing below the tree. Each was lost in their own thoughts which they didn’t share.

"Well, that went quite better than I expected." Severus said.

He was the first to talk and he broke the silence.

Scarlet giggled softly and said, "Me too."

Lythia looked at them both and decided on the spot that they were lunatics. Which part of the try not to aggravate other deities did they not recall?

"I can’t with you both...." she raised her hands in the air, frustration all over her face. They were like children who simply kept moving towards the fire even warned that fire was dangerous. Anyway, she and wisdom had succeeded in what they had come to do so she might as well as leave. She vanished away too.

Scarlet watched the space with sharp eyes and then she told Severus. "Does it seem to you like their timing was oddly suspicious?"

Severus looked up again, and he was reminded of that agonizing scream. In a deep thought filled voice he replied, "I think everything is oddly suspicious lately."
