Chapter 715: Moving love along.

They engaged in a game of chase, him chasing and her escaping his reach. Scarlet couldn’t help thinking that this was the most fun they had ever had together, in human and reaper form.

The chase was exhilarating, almost as good as sex. The freedom was addictive. She didn’t know how harpies and other creatures with wings were not in the air all the time. Perhaps Nyx knew what he was talking about when he suggested flying naked.

She saw something that made her stop and hover in the air, and then she dove down at once.

"Susu, wait for me." Esong went after her.

She landed on the balcony of a flower shop and sat down on the railing. Esong landed next to her but he didn’t sit as she did. He stayed on his foot and looked down at the street she was watching curiously.

"What is so interesting down there?" he asked her.

A crowd of people had gathered on the street, in front of the flower shop. Small multicolored lights had been hung up. A band was playing music and in the midst of the crowd which formed a circle, a man was on his knees in front of a woman.

"It’s a marriage proposal, he is asking her to marry him." she replied.

She was smiling genuinely as she watched the couple, hoping for the best for them. She moved her body from side to side and joined the crowd in chanting say yes, say yes. She thought the whole thing was quite romantic.

Esong on the other hand didn’t find it romantic. He found it to be too simple. "It’s so cliché, like a scene out of one of your soap operas."

"It’s still romantic." she told him.

"A public proposal could end in an entirely different way from what one anticipates. If she rejects him then he will be a source of entertainment, ridicule and mockery on star net forever. Look at all those people recording." He shook his head and prayed for the young man, hoping that he would not end up in such a situation.

She shoved him in the shoulder and said, "You are such a cynic, so pessimistic."

"I am objective and realistic." he replied. "If she is not in the same place as he is then he has just put her in a hard spot. There is nothing wrong with a private proposal between two people. It can be in a public entertainment venue, eatery or at home, but just between two people. Even the crown prince could propose like that so why not a commoner?"

To each their own, Scarlet thought. They were allowed to have differing views and she would not waste time convincing him to change his mind.

She looked down at the couple and considered his words. There was no question that he was right about some things but where was love without hope and silly expectations or desire to make grand gestures?

She raised her hand and formed green fireflies with her flame. She controlled them and made them dance around the crowd which was mesmerized.

The woman on the receiving end of the proposal became excited and she gapsed.

Esong realized that Scarlet was determined to help so he figured that he would aid her in her mission. He leaned over the balcony and shot something into the sky. Suddenly, it lit up brightly and beautiful fireworks exploded.

He used his powers to manipulate the fireworks, forming different shapes like a heart, flowers and the words ’i love you.’

"The words are meant for you, not them." he told her.

Scarlet scoffed and rolled her eyes.

"Hey, we are supposed to be helping them move their love along. We are today’s cupid for them." she said.

He shook his head and replied, "I am more interested in moving our love along."

She took her eyes off the scene below and glanced at him. He had a cocky smile on his face, probably because he thought he was so slick or clever.

Loud cheering came from below and she looked away from him. A celebration was going on below because the proposal was a success.

"She said yes." Scarlet said cheerfully. "Yeeey, i am so happy for them."

Esong was watching her while she watched the celebrating couple which engaged in a passionate kiss. The smile on her face was very hopelessly beautiful. She didn’t even know this couple but she had stepped in to help and she was excited for them.

It was one of the reasons why he loved her so much, she was good to everyone, even those that didn’t deserve it. She was kind and accepting, always preferring to save over destroying.

Those who called her destructive just because she blew up a few buildings did not know her true heart.

He slid behind her and put his arms around her small waist. Half expecting her to push him away, he waited for an evasive response but she didn’t do it. She leaned back into the hug and made herself comfortable.

He smiled and sighed, "I must be married to the reaper with the softest heart in the universe."

"That’s why i am guardian and you a warrior." she told him. "But, if you were not joined to Nyx and turned into a grim reaper naturally, which side would you choose, warrior or guardian?"

"Warrior." he replied immediately.

There was no hesitation in his voice, no consideration at all. The answer was obvious and she hadn’t even needed to ask.

"I should have known." she replied.

"I am a mecha warrior, i was born to fight and defend. It would not have been different in the underworld if i had got in by being a strong soul. You on the other hand could never be anything but a guardian. Just look at the laziness with which you take on the mecha fights. You don’t have zeal for it anymore and you allow Lora Varakas to play in your place." he told her.

In a high pitched voice she replied, "I can fight, i am also good at defending."

"No, you don’t enjoy fighting." he answered with confidence and sureness in his voice. "You just like new challenges because they make your blood boil and when the novelty wears off, you lose interest. That’s how it is with the mecha fights, they were fun until they weren’t.

Same thing with rebuilding the Blue star, it was fulfilling until it became self sufficient. The inter-realm games are your new goal. You have a fire in your eyes, a new purpose. I suspect that the fire will burn for a long time since over there you can be your true self."

He squeezed her stomach slightly and said in a whisper, "I hope your fire burns for me for the longest time." He tilted her chin and forced her head to fall backwards so that she could look up to his face.

He bent down so that his face could hover hers. As silly as it was, he wanted to hear the answer straight from her mouth.

After their temporary break, he found that he needed verbal reassurances. It was better to hear and know, than to remain silent and assume. Assumptions could be misleading and deceitful.

"You will only burn for me for eternity, right?" he asked.
