Fearing the carriage interior would be cold, Lin Yuan carefully fixed the carriage curtains as they happened to pass by Chen Zhuzi House. Observing the firmly locked doors and the increasingly dilapidated house, she sighed softly, wondering how Aunt Chen was getting used to life in Yecheng since Lady Liu had just chatted with her about it before the new year. After all, they had lived together for so many years. Although there had been ups and downs, the sense of familiarity still lingered now that they were apart.
Some day when she visited Yecheng, she would pay a visit to Aunt Chen.
Having not seen Xia Zheng for many days, both Xiao Linshuang and Lin Wei were overjoyed at the encounter, especially Xiao Linshuang, who started playing games with him in the carriage. The entire journey was filled with laughter and chatter.
No sooner had the carriage entered the city gate than it suddenly came to a stop, still a good distance from South City School. Why had they stopped?
"What’s the matter?" Lin Yuan’s hand hadn’t touched the carriage curtain before Xia Zheng blocked her.
"It’s cold outside, sit inside." Only after Lin Yuan moved to the innermost part of the carriage did Xia Zheng carefully lift a corner of the curtain, anxious not to let in the cold wind that might chill the occupants.
There stood a person in front of the carriage, clad in a thin jacket against the cold wind, staring steadfastly at him.
With a raised eyebrow, Xia Zheng called out in a clear voice, "Xiao Linzi, why aren’t you at the tofu shop? What brings you here?"
The one approaching was Xiao Linzi. After the product release event the previous night, he hadn’t secured the first opportunity and had spent the whole night unable to sleep. Just when he finally came to terms with it, he rushed to Fuman Building early in the morning only to learn that Lin Yuan had already gone to Lin family’s slope.
Uncertain whether Lin Yuan would return to Fuman Building, he chased after her all the way to the city gate and waited. In order not to miss Lin Yuan’s carriage, he had braved the cold wind all morning. Had they delayed any longer, his feet would have been frozen numb.
Hearing it was Xiao Linzi, Lin Yuan’s first reaction was that something must have happened at the tofu shop. She hurriedly moved forward beside Xia Zheng and pulled back the curtain a bit more.
"I told you it’s cold outside, why did you still come over?" Xia Zheng frowned, but he was well aware of the girl’s temperament and knew she would not obediently sit back down. He sighed, turned around, and fetched a blanket to cover her legs.
Lin Yuan turned with a grateful smile, appreciative not only for his consideration but also his understanding.
"Xiao Linzi, has something happened to the tofu shop?"
Lin Yuan’s question pulled the absent-minded Xiao Linzi back to reality. He squinted through the small gap into the carriage, barely making out a glimpse of a garment but hardly able to see the person inside.
"That, no, nothing’s wrong." Xiao Linzi’s face was flushed, whether from the cold wind or from something else. What surprised Lin Yuan even more was that the usually aloof and cold Xiao Linzi seemed somewhat flustered.
Lin Yuan frowned, "If nothing is wrong with the tofu shop, then why have you come to find me so early? Is there something else?"
Xiao Linzi bit his lip, his hands tightly clenched.
Lin Yuan hadn’t noticed, but Xia Zheng had been paying close attention to the lad all this while. He understood the eager look in the boy’s eyes, for how could he not as a man?
"What is going on, really?" Seeing him silent, Lin Yuan grew anxious. Could it possibly be some other matter?
Xiao Linzi clenched his fists and pursed his lips, finally saying, "I, I want to go to school."
So it was about going to school. Lin Yuan’s heart, which had been hanging in her chest, finally settled back down. This fellow was usually proud enough, but now, causing her all this needless worry.
However, after Xiao Linzi mentioned it, she remembered that there were several other children in the tofu shop too. Formerly begging on the streets, they could hardly get enough food or clothing, let alone dream of going to school. Now that she had employed these children, she yet hadn’t forgotten her roots as a businesswoman. If she could provide a better future for these kids, she certainly was willing.
Xiao Linzi had waited a long time without hearing Lin Yuan speak. His lips were pressed tight, "I know I’m just an assistant to you right now and I truly have no right to ask to go to school. Never mind, let’s pretend I never said anything." After speaking, Xiao Linzi turned to leave, his disheartened demeanor deeply moving.
"Big sister!" Lin Wei’s voice suddenly called out from within the carriage, causing Xiao Linzi’s body to tense abruptly, and his steps faltered.
Lin Yuan was about to stop Xiao Linzi when she heard Lin Wei’s voice. She even thought the little girl was holding a grudge over their last quarrel and forbidding her to let Xiao Linzi go to school.
