Tyrant's Obsession With The Heiress-Chapter 73: When The Lady’s Stubbornness Kicks In
Chapter 73 - When The Lady's Stubbornness Kicks In
Orpheus' dual-coloured gaze narrowed, but the man wasn't entirely doing a good job at intimidating her. Now that his men weren't around, the lady was in charge and whatever she demanded, he would obey.
"Of course it isn't the only weapon I have, my lady," Orpheus said, his lips twitching into a proud curve."
Lady Karina set her hands on her hips, nearing the end of her patience. Her nose scrunched a little as she craned her head to look up at him. "Then you may leave your claymore behind and still have weapons to protect yourself."
And what would the man need weapons for either way? He was the wielder of fire and ice magic, two deadly elements, so she didn't quite see the need for him to carry any protection.
Orpheus mimicked her actions and set his hands on his hips as well, bending his head forward to look down at her. And oh, what a glorious view of her plump breasts he had from where he stood.
It took every cell in his body to not bend down and leave a mark over the soft flesh there.
"I will not leave my claymore behind," Orpheus insisted, crossing his arms over his chest. He could see the colour rising in her cheeks again, and this time it was definitely because of frustration.
The way she huffed at him made her cheeks puff out and the sight was enough to keep his eyes glued to her. It always amused him to watch her challenge him, especially when she never showed any signs of backing down.
In truth, he had no reason not to leave any of his weapons behind; he simply wanted to see what her reaction would be and which method she would use to convince him this time.
It wasn't long before Lyall returned with the other three knights behind him. As per Orpheus' orders, they would accompany them into Haleville.
Their liege scoured the area, spying what looked like a tavern tucked behind the back of a small bungalow; there was a crude sign carved overhead in the shape of a barrel.
"I would suspect an inn would be the suitable place to recruit your labour force," he stated, jerking his head in the direction of the tavern. "There's one over there."
Orpheus indicated for them to move toward it, seeing as the lady had no strategy to convince him. However, she held fast with no intention to follow."
And when Orpheus took a few steps forward, noticing she did not move, he looked at her queerly.
"What is the matter, my lady?" He asked.

Lady Karina lifted a stubborn eyebrow. "I will not go anywhere until you leave that weapon behind on your horse." She pivoted on her heels, facing Lyall and the other three knights. "All of you." She demanded, tapping her right foot on the ground.
"You will go and leave your weapons back on your horses," she repeated to them, making Lyall and the other three knights exchange surprised glances. "Threats and intimidations will not be the order of the day and we are here to hire labourers, not abduct slaves."
The Van Merikh knights had never taken orders from anyone other than their liege, but Lyall recalled that Orpheus warned all of them to never disrespect his future wife and to give her the same level of importance as him.
Lady Karina was adamant on her decision and she looked at Orpheus, daring him to challenge her.
The man glared at her a moment longer before cursing under his breath. With angry, jerky movements, he unstrapped his scabbard from his back and ripped the bindings off his legs, tossing it to the nearest knight.
The knight had fast reflexes and caught the weapon with ease; Lyall and the others were already removing their long blades, although still surprised that their liege had decided to obey the lady.
And as one knight went on the run with his arms full of their weapons back to the retreating escort, Orpheus turned to Lady Karina.
"Now," he fumed, struggling to maintain his control. "Are you satisfied, my lady? May we proceed?"
Lady Karina smiled sweetly, her dimple deep. "Thank you, my pet," she said quietly. "Aye, we may go."
All of his anger fled.
My pet.
The lady had called him something so simple, so sweet, and so unexpected that it blew the fury from him like the flame being blown out on a candle. Aye, she had only said it because he submitted to her will, but the specifics behind it didn't matter to him.
He'd killed men for even daring to look in his direction with challenge in their eyes, but never in his life had he felt such a thrill as he had when the small, simple word spilt from her lips.
A part of him felt it was absolutely idiotic since he once again folded like a fool for her.
But strangely enough, for the first time in his life, it made him feel as if he belonged.
It made him feel wanted. And even if that didn't make sense to anyone else, it did to him.
Orpheus shook his head at her, weakly, as he gently took her by the elbow. "You are maddening, my lady."
She was still grinning at him. "I know."
An exasperated expression crossed his face, but it was without force. "And God's Blood," he muttered. "When I decided months ago to conquer Moonveil, I should have stayed well away for I would have been doing myself a favour."
His words held a bit of humour to them, but the smile on Lady Karina's lips faded. His statement held a myriad of meanings for it; so many people would still be alive if he didn't lay siege to Moonveil.
Moonveil would still have been a place of peace, but she would never have met this beast of a man who was so far showing that he did indeed have a human side that was surprisingly deep.
And as much as she wished all of those people were still alive, she had gravely come to realise she was not sorry that she had met Orpheus Van Merikh.
Her goals were still clear and within sight, and she somehow convinced herself she hated him, but she couldn't deny the truth.
Lady Karina was glad to have met him.
