Max felt his hand tremble for a second as he bent down and picked up the cloth he had dropped, setting it on the bench.

With the other he carefully ran it along the rune-etched wood shaft that Buwingrid had worked on for half a day.

The markings and slight grooves felt perfect, each one cut just enough to lend aid in one's grip yet not so deep they would bite into one’s fingers.

“I… I got a notification of experience and what we made,” the dwarf said, her voice quieter than usual. “Have… have you identified it yet?”

Shaking his head, Max took a deep breath and slowly let it out.

His hand gripped the shaft, and Max was thankful it was still clamped in the vices as he stood there, leaning against it, trying to fathom what he had just read.

We have achieved… something most would never imagine possible in their life.

“Soooo?”

Buwingrid’s question and tone brought him back to the moment, and he turned to face her, smiling as he moved to where the closest vice was and undid it.

“How about I let you inspect it for yourself?”

“It’s not bonded?”

“Not yet,” he replied with a grin, moving to the last vice and freeing the weapon. Feeling a little foolish at the care in which he handled it, knowing it could smash mountains without a scratch, he held it out to her.

The dwarf slowly came to where he was and put her hand on the shaft, immediately forming a fist as she gripped it and almost stumbled.

Her eyes were like large coins, and she was blinking rapidly as her face stretched upward.

“Impossible!” she gasped. “This… this is what I’ve worked toward my whole life!”

“And we did it. Together.”

He felt a tug from her and without hesitating, let go, watching as she brought the shaft to her lips and kissed it.

Buwingrid then gave it a twirl, the large blade staff transforming as it did into a sword, the black metal blade growing in length as the shaft shrunk, forming a handle and hilt.

Next it became a massive battle axe, and then a two-handed hammer, and finally returned to its initial creation.

With a sigh, she held it out to him and smiled.

“I… I also got a skill. I’m guessing you did as well?”

Max felt his eyebrows raise at the knowledge not only had she acquired a share of the experience but that she had gained a skill as he did.

New novel 𝓬hapters are published on ƒreewebɳovel.com.

“I did. Ultimate Elemental Affinity?”

A groan escaped her mouth as he took the weapon from her.

“Gods… Ockrim must love you more but no… mine is simply Advanced. For you to have jumped to Ultimate…” Buwingrid shook her head as she paused, her right eyebrow rising. “What rank?”

“Uncommon.”

Grinning, she bobbed her head.

“Well that is good. Most would be happy for a common rank as the skill can grow, increasing the chance for success as you make something like that. Had it been rare or higher, I would have probably quit this life and become a baker or something.”

Rolling his eyes, Max felt how perfect the weight seemed and wondered what he should do about naming it.

We should hold off on it for now. Without knowing what will happen, it would be best not to announce to the world that something like this has been created just yet. Especially before the fight.

True… no point giving Kazrak a heads up about this.

With a smile, he tapped the butt of the shaft against the stone floor and leaned against it.

“So tell me, Buwingrid. What is a good name for a weapon like this?”

Her silver eyes sparkled as she grinned.

“Oh, I can think of a few.”

***

After cleaning up the shop, Max sat in a corner, eyes closed, trying to meditate and consider the battle to come.

He knew he could sneak into the property, using his stealth and most likely would be able to make it back to his friends without being followed, but that risk didn’t seem worth it.

Buwingrid had shared the little she knew about his opponent and even after doing a few tests with the weapon, Max wasn’t sure what this fight would be like.

Could we use the same trick as with Riniya?

We wouldn't have an idea without knowing how strong or fast Kazrak is. Besides, what happens if most of his power comes from his physical side rather than his skills? It appears that his body is always metallic, meaning it wouldn’t suddenly vanish.

And if I lose the element of surprise, he won’t go near that place again, making it worthless as well.

Then there are those weapons. Part of me is nervous, and while I have been able to mitigate many of the afflictions and status effects that have been placed upon us, the odds of me being able to do so quickly are probably low.

You didn’t have a problem clearing my attacker flag over and over when I was doing what I did against Terrance.

That is because I had already cleansed it once, and the variation of it wasn’t a big deal. It is like fighting a creature that doesn’t ever change its tactics. You can defeat it faster each time.

And if this is something new and much stronger…

Then, it will be more challenging the first time.

So he is fast, strong, immune to most weapons, and has a pair that inflicts both damage and debuffs. What else?

I’m assuming that this battle will be fought in a neutral environment. If I had to guess it would be an open area of dirt, and probably not that wide. Unlike Igarra who didn’t know your true power or abilities, she chose a battlefield that seemed best for her.

The stone and rocks were allies to you and the high ceiling of the arena chosen gave you the space to maneuver. While I’m not certain what limits can be imposed, it would most likely be something that plays into Kazrak’s power.

You don’t believe our allies will attempt to change it in our favor?

Bob remained silent for a moment, and Max was content to wait, finding peace in the silence of the spot he was resting. Finally, his skill spoke.

We should not depend upon that assistance. While I have no doubt they are loyal to you in some way, their entire life is built upon the concept of the strongest and those who will allow them to become stronger.

Each of them has played the part they must to survive and that will mean selling out everything they can about you while holding back what is possible in case you win. This isn’t about them not being your friend or ally, but instead a worldview.

Jazzjak told you long ago that he and his wife were okay with killing the other if it meant the survival of their children. While you might be considered powerful and an ally, he would easily sacrifice you for his children as well.

Do you think then that I should check where I stored our friends?

No. First if they did give that position away, then it hurts them in some ways. If they give up everything, Kazrak will know they will do the same about him. Also, if that position was known, we would be too late to act, and anything we did would only potentially bring them harm. Besides, I would pity whoever came and found Aerthen waiting for them.

Allowing himself a small laugh, Max saw that scenario play out.

Perhaps having two dragons there when we arrived will help to cause some concern for Kazrak. I have no doubt that was not part of what he imagined.

So all we can do now is wait.

Which is slowly killing me… this is worse than when we were trapped in Ezreal’s cell. At least there I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. Right now I’m completely aware of what is going to take place.

Sometimes knowledge is complex.

Lost in his thoughts, Max’s mind wandered, and he considered dozens of things that had been on his mind lately.

If we end up in the tower here, I assume it’s pointless beyond the hope of loot. We don’t even know if there are bosses or whatever.

Most likely you’ll have to start on the first floor as well. I doubt we would start on the upper ones. While it might be a good place to farm reagents for crafting, we would most likely just waste time outside of experience and potential loot and boss drops.

And what about Rakonath? Could a place like that be beneficial for him? In a world like this? I know you don’t know and can sense your frustration with this line of questions again, but if he was to defeat and kill creatures in this world, would the system that is in place here help him get stronger faster?

We still do not know his true power. Would you say he is as strong as a level fifty adventurer from your world? Could he defeat a team of adventurers? If I was honest, I’m not certain that he could. We haven’t even seen him use a breath weapon yet, and I doubt his flying skills are up to the task.

You know as well as I do that Aerthen is his best hope at getting stronger. She will manage him and teach him how to do what he must do. It may be a long time before he can go hunting with us at all.

Grunting, Max nodded.

And that brings me back to one last question…

You need to win first. I am glad you expect to always come out on top, but nothing else matters if you do not survive this fight. How can Everett help this world if you die? How will Rakonath grow stronger if you’re dead? The child that is inside Tanila will most likely never be born and those dwarves that you love will find themselves a treat for someone.

If you do not survive this battle, everything you have fought for over a year is pointless. Use that as motivation to not fall.

The truth of what Bob said lit a fire inside his core.

Opening both eyes, Max stood and moved to the area where he had practiced with his new weapon earlier.

Without waiting, he began to move through different techniques, knowing that every battle to come would have stakes like this one.
