Way of Overlord-Chapter 449: The Return of the Kan
Chapter 449: The Return of the Kan
Now, the tribe could no longer be called a tribe. instead, it is more appropriate to regard them as a Khanate.
It is big and full of people. And a kingdom that is big, full of people, also means it is a place full of interest and desire.
And these desires all clashed against each other, each one sometimes complement each other, sometimes counteract each other.
In a place like this, with the Kan on the top, those below him should be smart so that they could survive in this mode.
The warriors are still too insensitive, the Elders still are muddled.
These forces still is in a transition period.
The only one that could sense this other than Rukari is the Ashana. Ashana is very sensitive in this kind of matter.
Simply because they are used to deducing the intention of rulers and warlords in the Steppe.
Failure to understand the hearts of the people who rule over them would result on Ashana not having a long life.
The message is sent and even though Aeryon did not immediately declare himself Khan he is receptive to the idea.
More and more pleading from his subjects urges him to become Khan
And so, he "reluctantly" announce that he would defer to the opinion of the Ashana and the Elder Council
It is basically an acquiesces.
Just not now.
When he returns to the Brolgadhr he would think about this again.
But there is already rumour swirling around that he would claim himself Khan on the middle of the summer.
Now, the Kan suddenly decided to return to Brolgadhr
When the news of his return was confirmed, the Ashana and the Elders gathers to held a meeting and by the end of the meeting they all agree to hold a celebration
This time the celebration would be done with grandeur and full of the sense of ritual.
The reason why the Ashana and the Elder Council wanted to do this is because the Kan has never did a massive feast since the tribe become stronger.
When he became chief, the situation of the tribe was dire and it was not a time of celebration
Then the tribe becomes bigger and stronger but the Kan was either out there fighting alongside Belarion to conquer the tribes, or in the war tent with Mayeux discussing things.
The feast and celebration itself was forgotten.
If the Brolgadhr tribe is still the small tribe they were before, then there is no need for such grand celebration
But now that Aeryon is a great chief, a Kan, ruling almost dozens of tribes and dozens more clans all over the area of the south, a celebration should be held.
It is a way of showing generosity. If not, the Kan might get the reputation of stingy.
In Yan, they wanted to emulate The Great Teacher and his disciple. But in the Steppe, most tribe wanted to emulate Hansraj of the Tayyim tribe.
In folk tales, his story is remembered and in the fires of the tribe center, his deeds are immortalized
A generous great warrior that turns enemies into friend.
A divine poet that could make the eagles and the condors to stop and a rider that could race anyone and win.
His fame followed him wherever he stopped.
Whenever he fought, he triumphed and if he gathered up booty he left it to pillage; he would give to everyone who asked; he was always the first to play the game of arrows and if he took prisoners, he would set them free.
This is Hansraj, the warrior that has high status among the people of the Steppe.
His great gift of hospitality make hospitality in the Steppe, almost a sacred act and could even start wars and end wars between tribe.
Aeryon now holds such a large land, commands ten thousand men, possess ten thousand horses, and he has wealth that if he hoard all of his wealth, he could live for a hundred years and the wealth would be enough for him in the Steppe.
It is well known that when the Kan goes to battle and win victory, he give his fair share. frёewebηovel.cѳm
Sometimes, he even gives more from his own pocket to his warriors.
This is one of the reason why his warrior would rather die than let even one arrow to hit their Kan.
In a world where life is cheap, the Kan treats his men this sincerely and this kind of sincerity must be repaid.
But while the Kan reputation among the soldiers and the army is impeccable, the common people rarely feel this grace.
Those who interact with the Kan and those who come from the original Brolgadhr tribe, the uncles and aunts, the cousins and the clan feel the grace but the other common people of the tribe that has been assimilated or the common people of the tribe that has been conquered, did not feel this grace.
In the beginning, it is grace enough that the Kan let them live without oppression and did not squeezes them to death
But there is no harm without comparison.
To the eyes of the common people that did not feel this grace, the Kan is stingy.
Why?
Because he did not held any feast at all. At least not a grand feast.
With his wealth, one feast is not that hard to do.
This is where the Elder Council and the Ashana and the Kan has differences.
Aeryon did not know this custom. The Elder Council on the other hand is slow to adapt to their growing status.
And the only open who could see this is the Ashana.
It was the Ashana that reminds Rukari, "The Kan holds the ambition to swallow the world and is a great man of the Steppe.
Let us help the Kan to show his generosity, like Hansraj of Tayyim tribe and gather the hearts of the people and the deeds would be spread out all over the Steppe"
When Rukari heard this, he finally woke up and is reminded that all the great chief when they achieve great deeds would held a feast.
This is a reward to his men, but also to share the wealth of the world with his tribe
It has become a custom because the first one of such custom is dedicated in Hansraj name
The feast in the Steppe is different from the feast in Yan.
In Yan, the feast is focused on the honoured guest and to attract officials to know your name, for famous people to come and commend you to their circles
It benefited the scholars, the officials, the rich and the powerful.
In the Steppe, the feast is for the people.
And those who eat the food at the feast and grateful for the feast must be loyal to those who feed them
It is a boon to the common people and the tribespeople.
A generous chief sometimes even held a feast just to give food to his tribes people to eat.
Begging is not an honourable thing to do.
But that created an extreme culture where even if they are starving they would not beg.
They would rather go south and raid the Yan people and risk death rather than beg for food.
Which is why there are cases where the chief opens his own tent and held feast just so he could feed his tribes people.
This kind of deeds is of course rare but it does happen. The feast is not to waste resources but to calms the heart of the people and relaxes the tribe
There is many changes in the Steppe nowadays and it is hard to keep up with all of it.
Aeryon is coming back home because of a certain event but he also knows that this kind of celebration should be held
Of all the tribes that have expanded during this time, Aeryon army was the only one that did not have so much celebrations when winning
Excessive celebration is not wise but no celebration at all, would be like pulling the string of the bow too hard till it split into two.
A few hours before he come to the city, the scout saw him and the messenger came from the Elder Council informing him of the matter.
Aeryon agree after the messenger tell the reason and so, when he enters the city, it is more like a procession than him rushing inside the city
If there is no such celebration, it is inevitable that Aeryon would already quickly rush to his new residence to settle the problem
And then a horse neighed, the dust rises up and from the city gates, the guards saw a man riding a horse, and as he approached the city, the speed of the horse slowed down and it sauntered toward the city gate
The bugle is blown, the horns are sounded, the drums sound resound through the air.
And a shout full of joy echoes in the air
"The Kan has returned!"
