Way of Overlord-Chapter 468: Nothing More than That
Chapter 468: Nothing More than That
Around him, he could see that his men is dwindling.
Bodies sprawled all over the ground, the ground could not be seen but the bodies of men stretched for dozen of miles all over.
Garron would usually fight if there is a chance to win.
And he rarely said things like he would lose before the battle is over even when the odds are against them
But this time, it is not about odds.
Garron understood it.
How could he not understood it?
This is about people hearts.
The people hearts are no longer on him.
Ogura won them.
And right now, he himself did not want to win
Whether he win or lose, in both situation he lose. When he look at the enemy he killed, and at the enemy that his army killed, he could not feel happy at all
Because all of these people, all of these men, all of these horses, all of them is his tribe, his family
And all of this killing between brothers, between son and father made him remember old memories that he had tried to forget.
"As it was in my time, should my son also suffer like me?" he mutters, maybe hoping that the wind of the Steppe would convey his question to the Skyfather.
he is reminded of certain thing in the past
A few decades ago, this kind of tragic scene of killing had also happened. Brothers killing brothers, kin killing kin
It was during the collapse of the Utgard.
Now, that he arrived at the battlefield, now that he is close to death, everything suddenly become clear to him
Twang!
A sudden chilling sound splits the air, the twang of a bowstrings awaken him from his thoughts.
The sound and screams all around him are nothing but noise to him right now. But his eyes narrowed
"So, this is it"
From the hills, archers unleashed a storm of arrows upon his horsemen.
His horsemen have killed a lot of Ogura cavalry during the charge.
But his cavalry are not well protected.
It all boils down to lack of men.
One person had to kill three of the other side to even have an equal fight
Ogura has the advantage of people and Garron did not.
Garron look as his horsemen dying in screams and in pain.
There is nothing he could do for them now
The men falls down from their horses, the horses either ride away from their master or the horses was shocked and surprised and throws their rider from their back, flung into the ground.
"CAPTURE GARRON!" Suddenly there is this shout coming from the rear
Garron look behind him.
Someone was rushing toward him with a spear
This warrior is young. He got up on his horse and before his balance is shaken he jumps and fly toward him in the air, the spear tip pointed toward his head.
In this moment, time seems to move so slow that he could see everything in slow motion in his eyes.
All his eyes could see is that tip of the spear coming closer and closer but before that person could even reach him, the twang of a bow echoes
An arrow shot that person head, and the head exploded, the blood splash onto Garron body.
Garron look toward the source of that arrow and he smiles when he saw the archer
It was Waqu.
Waqu is looking at him and then Waqu brought his horse closer to Garron. He shake his head
"There is a traitor" Waqu mutters making sure what he said could not be heard by others.
Garron nodded and right now all he could do is smiles bitterly.
Betrayal from the back., he mutters to himself.
He could not see it but he could hear the fight that is happening on his rear.
And just a moment later, a messenger rides to him informing him of what is happening on the back and Garron could not help but shakes his head
Several of Garron commanders, turned against him
"Even old friends could no longer tolerate me" Garron said wistfully
Waqu heard this and simply said
"They forget"
But Garron did not agree with this
"They did not forget. They just make a choice. They believe my son is better"
Waqu look at his sworn brother for a few second and he frowned looking at Garron
He did not seem mad or even angry. Waqu ask
"You are not angry?"
"I am not. My whole life I wanted to make Utgard powerful. Maybe I am old and certain thing is not so clear to me anymore" he paused for a second and then laugh
"But that son of mine....he could not accomplish anything great!"
In this battle, he had to look at Ogura with new eyes. He is adept at fighting, adept at winning the hearts of the tribe.
But the one he is fighting is Garron old men.
The hearts that he is winning is hearts that are already wavering long before Ogura come into the picture.
Utgard future....Ogura could not see it.
Just a child that is angry because he did not get what he wants and wanted to burn the tent because he did not get it
A child throwing a tantrum, not being able to see the consequences.
This boy would bring this tribe to decline!
An impetuous brat! Ogura is nothing more than that.
How could his son compete with the great heroes of the world if he could not even accept this kind of tempering?
How could he compete with the brutal Khan of the East Dama with this kind of army?
How could he defeat Aeryon who is renowned to have organised army and staunch discipline?
If Ogura could not defeat even those two, he could not expand even an inch of the tribe?
And those who did not expand in this era of great contention could only decline.
Others could bow their heads and serve and bide their time.
Garron also do this. He did not mind doing it if it could save his tribe and his people
His pride is important. But it is not as important as the lives of his people. He has many wrongs and he has many weakness and vices but if there is one thing that he knows, he, Garron never did something to harm the tribe!
His son has too high of a pride, and vindictive.
A feral wolf...which chief would dare keep it beside them?
Could not serve other people, could not pretend to serve, could not expand....so how could his son achieve anything great?
A fierce wolf that could not even be used to hunt...this is not different than feral dogs! One would want to put it down the moment one sees such a dog!
Sayushi is not as powerful as Ogura, but he knows when to attack and retreat.
It is a pity that Sayushi could act prudently when it is about big matter but he is also quite vindictive in small matter.
He could have lay low and placate his older brother but instead he show off the favour he got and in the end, he was killed by Ogura.
That is what he disappointed by. Sayushi knows how to act in big thing but neglect things when it is small matter.
And because of that he paid it with his life.
Garron only have little time to think about all of this thing
The battle around him is becoming even more chaotic.
There are people that has now changed sides.
His son not only contacted other forces outside the main settlement, he even probably has inside men around Garron himself
Only that could explain the current betrayal
And Garron army is unprepared for this.
No matter how elite or experienced his men were, being attacked on two sides at the same time would rattle them
Not to mention, the one attacking them is their own allies.
Attack that should attack Ogura men now rampage into Garron ranks, sowing chaos and confusion with every passing moment
Still, it took some time, Garon thought to himself. He has been fighting for an hour now and his forces began to faltered.
His warriors turned around only to see their fellow warriors is being cut down by their former comrade
There is nothing more morale breaking than this. Ogura time it well.
Waqu who was beside Garron could see that the enemy is coming closer and closer toward Garron position.
"Brother, let me go forward" Garron look at Waqu and shook his head
"You want to die but I won’t let you" Garron said calmly like he is discussing what to eat for noon.
Waqu look at his sworn brother and then ask
"Then should I watch you die? I refuse!"
"Waqu" Garron shook his head
He did not said everything he wanted to say but Waqu would understand him
They are in battle right now.
They could not converse freely and says the things in their hearts.
But Garron do not think that Waqu should die in this battle. This is the battle between father and son.
Waqu had nothing to do with this. Garron knows that in this battle it would be either him or his son that would die.
There is no other choice.
But Waqu....he did not need to die.
And he did not want Waqu to die so meaninglessly here.
