Way of Overlord-Chapter 490: Reason For Rise and Fall
Chapter 490: Reason For Rise and Fall
You bring them prosperity and the people there could put up with almost anything. It is the same in the past and it is the same in the world he come from
As long as they were not the ones being persecuted, they would not care about other people suffering.
To them, other people business are not their business.
Whether their neighbours get persecuted or not, what matters is that their family is not the one being persecuted.
Aeryon compared China to Yan because it is truly similar.
The Great Steppe is like Mongolia.
But this Yan is alike to China, this Great Steppe is alike to great Steppe but also not quite the same
Aeryon is generous and he has a bit of temperament of romantic hero which is quite different than Genghis Khan which is very utilitarian and very much a man who would do anything regardless of the mean
This made the Mongols under him very efficient. He also treated people, women and anything else nothing more than tools.
He combined both fear, awe and his personal heroism and charisma made him able to lead his band of men to sweep the entire Great Steppe.
And one of his policy was the idea that Mongols above all others.
Just like Zhu Yuanzhang created a foundation that screw his descendants, Genghis Khan also had some fault
But his fault is not that grave and future descendant could have improved it. But they did not.
The Mongols ruled as a minority over a vast Chinese population and so they placed a rigid caste system.
In a way, this method work in the beginning because it divided the people and made them easier to rule.
Mongols at the top, followed by Central Asians, Northern Chines and finally Southern Chinese at the bottom
But this kind of ruling should not be extended for a long time.
When it is time to govern, harsh laws should be tempered.
This policy of discrimination of a majority population leads to deep resentment.
It also weakened loyalty among the Han Chinese majority.
By the time of Mongols, the Hu while not the main population of the Central Plains, they were already there.
And these people also rise during that time and the Han Chinese who have exploited them in the past now in turns get back their dues and in a more brutal way.
The resentment is there and it needed only time.
Then there was the overexpansion of the empire.
In Rome, Augustus is said to say not to overextend the empire.
The bigger the empire, the harder it is to govern. If one wanted to be strong and stable, take it slow, step by step.
This is not a map painting game.
Inside the map, there is people and people have desires and they have intelligence.
Kublai Khan stretched the empire too thin and added with the failed invasion of Japan, Vietnam and Jave, these campaign only added cost, drained resources and sap morale.
And after Kublai death, later Yaun emperor were often weak, indulgent or mere puppets.
This has something to do with the Yuan emperors jumping down from horseback and become like those sheep herders in Song.
They adopt the Chinese bureaucratic system and inherit its weakness and play the same drama that the Chinese imperial family would always do
Corruption and nepotism plagued the court
And the other reason is the over reliance of paper money.
They adopted the Song economy method without understanding it fully, leading to inflation.
Or maybe they did understand it and doesn’t care.
Then there is the excessive taxation and added that with the rampant corruption, the natural disaster and famine, all of these accumulated and resulted in a rebellion.
And Yuan falls.
The smear campaign then started and the Yuan dynasty faded from people heart.
Not all the smear was wrong but the ruler caste has always been good mixing truth and falsehood even more so in this ancient era
Aeryon did not think that there is dynasty that could last forever. But there is example in where the royalty and the people live peacefully with each other
There is always a process give and take and sometimes the cycle would return back to the beginning.
All methods of governance depends on the people living there, the culture of the people and the development of the people.
Some people trusted the people. Aeryon did not have such confidence. A mob could drown out the intelligent but the intelligent sometimes knows how to draft policy but could not execute
Different times, different circumstances, requires different method. The most saddest and cruel thing is to equalize everything without consideration of these factors.
Aeryon looking at Ayera right now in front of him
And for a moment there is a killing intent in his heart right now. This woman is very dangerous.
" I do not want my kingdom to be destroyed in the second generation" there is this feeling in his heart.
But he managed to restrain this killing heart. It was just a moment.
Ayera did not react.
Did she not sense it?
Or did she pretend not to sense anything.
There is only silence in the tent
Aeryon close his eyes and sigh.
There is a lot in his mind. There is his dreams for the future.
One wrong mistake could shake the foundation he is trying to build.
If he manage to create a foundation in the Steppe, then even if he did not conquer Yan in his lifetime, his sons and his grandson, his descendant would finish the job.
If Aeryon really managed to unite the Great Steppe in his lifetime, even if he did not leave any kind of instruction to attack Yan, his descendant would attack it regardless whether there is an order or not.
The Yan has killed people of the Steppe and the hammer of Gods would fall onto them.
If after his death, the Steppe is strong enough, then even without any instruction, his descendant would have the ambition to move south to avenge old wrongs.
This is just the development of things that is inevitable.
But the foundation that he created must be perfect. Aeryon is a bit of a perfectionist. Even more so when it is about a business like founding an empire.
Even if it is not perfect it should be stable enough that it could at least be a foundation of a dynasty that could last hundreds of years.
The difference between Yuan and Song era and this era is that this era still pays attention to destiny
Yan ruled the central plains for almost four hundred years. For four hundred years, the people of central plains has been ruled by the same family
Jiang family and the Yan dynasty.
So much so that they called themselves Yan people just like in his world where Han dynasty ruled that land for so long that they refer themselves to Han people to unite their identities.
In this world, in this era, at least in Yan, there is no yet time where dynasty changes after one hundred years.
If Aeryon or his descendant managed to take the Central Plains and rule it wisely, then people hearts would lean on his dynasty and it would last a long time
During the time of Song and Yuan, dynasty rise and fall, there is Sui, Tang dynasty, Wu Zhou and then Tang and after that there is the Five Dynasties and Ten kingdoms where the people of the world could see that there is no longer destiny, kingdoms rises and fall, the world united and break up in mere decades, kings changes almost yearly
The world was in royal rumble and destiny belong to whoever stronger and destiny would not protect you.
The majesty of the imperial power was thrown down one after another and all ambitious men have desire
The era of that time could be characterized as chaotic to the extreme
That is the background where Yuan dynasty succeeded Song and that is why even when Yuan ruled over China, the people have thoughts to rebel and the desire to rebel intensified because of the history before it
That is the social construct during that era.
But now, it is different.
Yan dynasty right now is like the late Han dynasty.
But the Great Steppe is not like the Great Steppe in Han dynasty
Especially, even more so when Aeryon is here.
This is an opportunity of a lifetime. If he or his descendant could take the Central Plains during this time, and implement benevolent government to the Yan people, make the people hearts lean on his dynasty, then a few hundred years of longevity of dynasty could be achieved.
Universal empires should have universals values.
And that is why Aeryon is reluctant to completely follow Genghis Khan step in all matters
There are some thoughts and plans that he had made that he did not consult with Mayeux. All of it is because it is too early and too thought provoking.
If he wanted to share all of his thoughts, he needs to wait for a more suitable moment.
Right now, Brolgadhr tribe could already be considered a kingdom.
And this city that has tall stone walls and palaces and residences are all preparation for claiming the throne
