Witty Wife, Better Life-Chapter 589 - 579 What Are You Thinking About Someone Else’s Old Man?
Chapter 589: Chapter 579 What Are You Thinking About Someone Else’s Old Man?
The aged couple who shared a hospital room with us checked out and left around noon, possibly feeling somewhat awkward since Shen Yunfang had declined their request.
Indeed, that morning, Shen Yunfang had not agreed to the woman’s request to exchange some Remittance Coupons for her.
Shen Yunfang was now receiving a hefty sum of money every month from Joseph Publishing House, as her "Transformers" series had already reached its third installment. Although it was no longer as explosively popular as the first, its sales still ranked at the top among comics of its kind, and she had an income of over one hundred thousand US Dollars each month.
Therefore, Yunfang had plenty of Remittance Coupons and, even more so, was not short of money. Another reason was that over a year ago, with the help of Ma Liguo and his wife, she had started exchanging a significant amount of Remittance Coupons every month. Hence, she really had no need to take the risk of exchanging coupons privately with that woman, just for a few dozen dollars. It wasn’t worth it.
Around two in the afternoon, Li Hongjun’s IV drip finished, and after Shen Yunfang helped him to the toilet, she told him to lie down and sleep while she went home to cook.
She hadn’t had time to cook breakfast or lunch, having eaten at the cafeteria instead; it was only in the afternoon that she could find time to go home and make a good meal.
After getting off the bus, Yunfang went to the small market first, buying some meat and vegetables to take home. However, as she arrived at the apartment entrance, she saw Old Man Li and Li Hongxing squatting there waiting for her.
"Oh, Xiaoshen, you’re finally back. When I saw your father-in-law today, I said you’d be back soon. They’ve been waiting for you most of the day, and I ended up feeling quite embarrassed," Auntie Sun chuckled, covering her mouth with her hand, looking very pleased with herself.
Yunfang frowned at her. "Auntie Sun, don’t you have cooking to do or children to look after? You’re so idle, always meddling in other people’s business, always watching someone else’s husband. Does your child know about this?"
Yunfang didn’t mince her words; she was truly fed up with Auntie Sun. Why was she involved in everything? She was certain that Sun had deliberately told Old Man Li she was coming back, making them wait for her on purpose. As for her motives, Yunfang couldn’t figure it out; perhaps she was just bored and looking for some excitement.
"You, how can you speak like this? I was just being kind letting your father-in-law know. How can you be so ungrateful?" Auntie Sun was taken aback by how brazen Yunfang was to air the matter so openly and was momentarily flustered.
"Oh, thank you for that. But just so you know, whatever you’re thinking, it won’t work. My father-in-law and mother-in-law are still together. For you to come between them like this is morally wrong, do you understand?" Yunfang blatantly assessed their situation as any normal person would.
"You, you, you’re slandering me!" Auntie Sun’s face turned crimson with the blunt accusation. Yet she dared not make a scene, for whether true or false, if such words spread, she wouldn’t be able to face anyone again.
"Yunfang, don’t be like that. The older sister is just trying to help me," Old Man Li said, rubbing his hands nervously.
Yunfang snorted, "Dad, although mom is still detained at the police station, isn’t it a bit improper for you to be calling another woman ’sister’ while she’s away?"
Yunfang felt a secret thrill inside; no wonder many people liked playing the villain. Talking in such a twisted way indeed felt extremely satisfying.
"Oh my heavens, I can’t take this anymore." Aunt Sun’s face turned red, a picture of utter grievance.
Indeed, she felt aggrieved. Even though she had been a widow for many years, she genuinely had no intention of finding another old man. And even if she did want to find someone, she wouldn’t set her sights on the likes of Old Man Li, a mere bumpkin. How could they falsely accuse her like this?
"Heh heh, Aunt Sun, don’t be so anxious. I only speculated because you and my father-in-law seemed quite close, so you don’t need to act like it’s the end of the world. Isn’t there a saying, ’A fly won’t land on an egg without cracks’? If you conduct yourself honorably, you shouldn’t fear others gossiping," Yunfang said with a chuckle, but her words were infuriatingly offensive.
"Alright, Aunt Sun, if I’m wrong, I apologize to you. But still, as I said, my father-in-law is a married man, and the Li Family upholds good morals, so please be mindful of your behavior in the future and keep your distance from my father-in-law," Yunfang added. Her words made Aunt Sun so embarrassed she let out a loud cry, covered her face, and ran upstairs. Shortly after, a loud bang was heard, and the whole building seemed to tremble, leaving no doubt about Aunt Sun’s humiliated state.
Yunfang nodded in satisfaction, guessing that after this incident, Aunt Sun wouldn’t be so shameless as to keep stirring up trouble and seeking attention.
"Yunfang, I... I just came to find you, that’s all. I’ve only seen her a few times; I harbored no other intentions," Old Man Li explained, sweating profusely as he tried to clear things up with his daughter-in-law. At his age, he truly had no such desires.
"Dad, I know. I was just saying. Who knew Aunt Sun would take off so quickly, acting as if she was hit right in the feels by my words," Yunfang remarked coolly.
"No, no..." Old Man Li didn’t know how best to explain himself, having never encountered such a situation in his life.
"Let’s drop the subject of an outsider. Dad, did you come here today for something specific?" Yunfang inquired. She looked at the father and son, considering they were still presentable and hadn’t grown thin, which meant they must have been living alright while she was away.
Relieved that his daughter-in-law had shifted from talking about Aunt Sun, Old Man Li promptly shared his reason for coming, "I heard that Hongjun has returned and is hospitalized with injuries. Your elder brother and I want to visit him, but we’re not sure which hospital he’s in, so I came to check with you." The news that his second son had been injured on the battlefield took him by complete surprise. The boy was so daring to keep such a significant matter secret from his elders; if something truly grave had happened, it would’ve been unbearable. Fortunately, Hongjun’s injuries weren’t critical, and despite being turned away everywhere, hearing news of his son had stirred up other emotions.
Yunfang glanced at Hongxing’s dejected look and then nodded, "Hongjun indeed has returned and is currently hospitalized. If you and my elder brother want to see him, wait for me a moment. I came back to cook, and after picking up the kids, I have to take food to the hospital. You can come with me to visit Hongjun."
Now that Old Man Li was aware of Hongjun’s injury, it would be wrong to prevent him from visiting his son; after all, Old Man Li was Hongjun’s biological father.
"Alright, we’ll wait for you downstairs then. You go ahead and cook," Old Man Li said, crouching down again.
"No way, Dad, this is your son’s home. You can’t just wait outside. Come on, let’s go upstairs and sit for a while. After I finish cooking, we’ll have a bite to eat to tide us over before we take food to Hongjun," Yunfang insisted, as it would be inappropriate to let her father-in-law squat outside while she was at home. If she were absent, that might be another story, but not when she was there—it would be a failing on her part as a daughter-in-law.
Treating one’s father-in-law isn’t the same as dealing with a mother-in-law.
