Chapter 39: Modifications

For the next three days, Leon only took out his squad to hunt while he watched. He didn’t engage in any battle, simply letting them handle it regardless of the threat.

Meanwhile, Samson and a few engineering students tried to fortify the buses so that they wouldn’t be destroyed.

The sound of their arguments and engines roaring often drew the attention of zombies, but Leon’s squad always took them down.

Today, Leon was overseeing their battle against a zombie group of about fifty zombies with levels ranging from 7 to 12.

Marie and Miguel dealt the most damage while Richard and Cassie assisted them.

Meanwhile, Fel stood at the back and took care of the zombies that slipped away from the four. Although she was still timid, the girl was now able to fight zombies properly and kill them without freaking out or trembling.

’An improvement, honestly.’

Leon noted, leaning against a wall as he watched them. Behind him, Samson and a few students discussed in low voices while occasionally glancing at the battle.

On the first day, they had all panicked and had ran back inside. However, after it happened a few times, they had gotten used to it.

"Adaptation is humanity’s strongest weapon."

He mumbled to himself. Looking around, he found it hard to believe that this was the Clifford University he had known in the past.

A dream university that many people from all over the world wanted to get enrolled into.

Now, it had become a zombie infested campus with the remaining humans trapped and barely surviving.

Even then, the survivors were still surviving. Living, and thriving. They were already adapting and planning their escape from this hell.

’Really. Whoever created humans deserve a huge thumbs-up from the whole world.’

He pushed himself off the wall when he noticed Miguel smash the head of the last zombie with his hammer.

The blonde boy walked up to Fel and asked about her wellbeing, to which the girl nodded shyly.

"Any reward?"

Leon asked. They all turned to him, then shook their heads.

"No. The strongest was only Level 12. And I killed it. So..."

Marie smiled bitterly, holding the red spear in her hand.

Leon understood and wasn’t dissatisfied. He knew that as a person grew stronger, they would no longer get any reward from killing beings on a lower level than them.

"Fel, do the thing."

The brown-haired girl immediately walked over and began to heal Leon’s injured hand.

Meanwhile, Miguel cast a subtle glance at them, then smiled bitterly.

He had gotten injured a few times over the past three days, but Fel refused to heal him.

Although he could understand why, as Leon needed her full power to recover quickly, he couldn’t help but feel jealous. And that jealousy made him feel guilty.

After all, even after reaching Level 5, he still stayed with Leon and had surrendered to him.

’Ugh... I’m really a stupid person.’

Before he could spiral into self-loathing, Richard walked over with a light grin.

"Hey, guess what?"

Miguel turned to him, curious. "What?"

"One of the zombies I killed was wearing a wig." He struggled to hold back a laugh. "It was actually bald. Pffthahaha!"

Miguel involuntarily burst into laughter too, causing a few people to glance over.

The two men immediately hardened their faces and pretended to be serious. Unfortunately, they could not stop their lips from twitching.

"Zombie girls and fake life." Miguel muttered, biting back a smile.

Richard merely hummed, not daring to say a word as he feared he might burst out laughing again.

Leon payed little attention to their jokes, trying to suppress the twitching if his lips from the itching pain he was feeling.

Soon, Fel’s face turned pale, and she stopped. "I... I’m almost dry."

He nodded, turning his hand slightly. Its condition had improved greatly, and he could now move his left hand around.

It was just that he didn’t want to risk welding the black greatsword until he was completely healed.

"At least I can use it normally for now."

He clenched his left fist, then looked at Fel. "Thank you."

At that moment, Selene and Reymond came out of the field house to inspect Samson’s project.

Leon turned and also walked over. Although he wasn’t an engineering student, he still wanted to listen to whatever they were saying.

When he got there, Selene was frowning—unsurprising.

"No progress yet? What exactly is it that you’re trying to do?"

Reymond rolled his eyes as if he had been asked this same question a hundred times.

"I told you before, didn’t I? That what I’m trying to improve is the protection. These bumpers and car bodies wouldn’t survive a single hit from a strong zombie. Imagine that clawed zombie Leon fought."

He folded his arms, looking at the buses with a sorry gaze.

"I can see the buses getting shredded if that zombie attacks us."

Selene deadpanned. "I never saw the clawed zombie, so I can’t say."

Samson grew exasperated, but before he could re-explain, she continued.

"But I understand what you’re trying to do. It’s essential. However, what is the current problem you’re facing?"

Samson relaxed a bit, glanced at Leon, then looked at the buses again.

"It’s materials. We don’t have materials that are strong enough to resist those sharp claws or things like that. We’ve tried stacking steel, but it’s only making the bus heavier. No solution currently."

Reymond, who had been silent all long, tried to think of something.

"Although I’m a commercial student, I know one or two about cars. If we can get bulletproof cars and remove their body parts..."

Selene glared at him, causing him to shut up.

His idea made sense, but was entirely inapplicable in this situation. Where did they want to get a bulletproof car?

"Instead of that... I think we should be able to find some useful things near the female hostel." Selene said coolly.

Leon immediately turned to her, his eyes narrowed. "You mean those?"

He glanced back at the buses, pictured something in his mind, then hummed.

"Alright. Perhaps it might work. We should give it a try."

Selene nodded. "Hopefully, something hasn’t dragged them all away."

"Well, what are you two waiting for? Lead the way!"

Samson laughed boisterously, his lips spread with a wide grin.
