Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Uncle Morgan... I’m Scared

"Chloe, it was me in Lucas’s room that night."

When Matthew Morgan said this, the sky suddenly exploded with huge fireworks, drowning out his words.

In the next second, the entire world plunged into darkness.

The fireworks had ended.

The sudden darkness terrified Chloe Grant. She hurriedly reached out, instinctively gripping Matthew Morgan’s arm, "Uncle Morgan..."

Chloe Grant’s voice carried a trembling sob; she was very afraid.

Even though she had been dealing with this for many years, Chloe Grant still couldn’t adapt to the sudden darkness and couldn’t bravely face it.

Her night blindness was a familial trait from her mother’s side.

Initially, it wasn’t this severe; as long as there was a little light, she could see. But as she grew older, it became more serious.

"It’s alright." In the darkness, a large hand held Chloe Grant’s trembling small hand, then removed it from the arm and clasped it in the palm.

Chloe Grant shivered at first but soon felt reassured.

She never knew that the usually cold Uncle Morgan had such warm hands that could provide a sense of security.

"Uncle Morgan, the fireworks are over. Shall we go home?" Chloe Grant asked tentatively.

She didn’t like staying in a dark world for too long; she felt too anxious.

Matthew Morgan turned around coldly, looking through the window at the brightly lit interior, and calmly said, "There’s a power outage."

"Huh?" Chloe Grant was dumbfounded.

She had been living in this villa for ten years and it was the first time something like a power outage happened.

But Matthew Morgan had spoken it, so Chloe Grant hardly doubted it.

"Mm, let’s sit for a while." Matthew Morgan replied, then pulled her hand slightly to make Chloe Grant step forward.

He turned back, wiped the step with a handkerchief, and then let Chloe Grant sit down.

At the same time, Matthew Morgan released Chloe Grant’s hand, intending to dispose of the handkerchief, but once he released it, Chloe Grant quickly grabbed it again.

Both hands gripped his large hand tightly.

"Uncle Morgan... I’m scared." Her voice was soft and trembling, a little plea blended with sobs.

After speaking, she held on even tighter.

Matthew Morgan looked down at his hand, which was tightly clung to by her.

Chloe Grant was probably too frightened to realize that she had gripped Matthew Morgan’s hand to the point it was turning pale; her fingernails, being rather long, had slightly pierced into the skin of his hand.

Yet, Matthew Morgan didn’t show the slightest anger; instead, his previously stern demeanor softened exceptionally.

He turned to sit beside Chloe Grant and naturally placed the hand she was gripping on his left thigh.

He reached out to let Chloe Grant lean on his shoulder.

At the moment when her head leaned on his shoulder, Chloe Grant was startled and quickly straightened up, but in the next second, Matthew Morgan pulled her back into place.

The soft face rubbing against his hard shoulder didn’t hurt, but rather gave a sense of comfort.

In the darkness, Chloe Grant felt particularly frightened, but Matthew Morgan’s action gave her a tangible sense of his presence, reassuring her that there was someone in the darkness who made her feel safe.

Even though Matthew Morgan was intimidating, he was also Chloe Grant’s elder, providing a great sense of security.

Seeing that she was no longer struggling, Matthew Morgan slightly lowered his head to glance at her with a gentle expression.

Raising his head again, for the first time, Matthew Morgan realized the moonlight was a beautiful sight.

"Uncle Morgan, will there be stars in the sky?"

Perhaps feeling uneasy sitting there in silence, Chloe Grant couldn’t help but speak.
