Chapter 466: Why?

Death is both a blessing and a curse, and I wasn’t talking about Chang Xuefeng.

Looking at the man slumped over as if he had died, I scoffed and rolled my eyes. "Nice try," I said, my voice as gentle as I could make it despite my harsh words. "But we can see you breathing."

"Why didn’t you kill me?" grunted the man, his arms still hanging limply at his sides. However, that was just a reaction to becoming blind. I’m sure if I gave him a knife and enough time, he would have no problems trying to kill me. freeweɓnovel.cøm

"I’m not sure," I shrugged honestly, even as Luca took my cup of coffee out of his space and handed it to me. "A part of me thinks that it’s not fair to leave you alive after you ate your wife and child. But another part thinks that living with a gaping hole in your chest from your missing memories might be fitting."

Shrugging my shoulders, I spun around, not wanting to deal with the man anymore.

And people called me a monster. At least I haven’t eaten anyone.

Eric nodded his head as he spun around, going after Hattie. Luca and the others remained on the porch, looking down at the man.

"I didn’t kill anyone," said the man, shakily as he tried to climb to his feet. "I don’t know what she is talking about. I think I would remember eating my wife and child."

"Amnesia isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be," said Luca, his back straight as he sneered at the man. "Just because the Devil let you forget, it doesn’t mean that you actually will. Your mind will continue to play ticks on you until it forces you to remember everything that you forgot."

"What do you know," sneered the man, finally growing a backbone. "My wife ran away with another man and took our daughter with her. I had nothing to do with their disappearance."

"Sure you didn’t," purred Désiré as he placed his elbow on Luca’s shoulder. "And next you are going to tell us that they tasted like chicken. Right?"

The man swayed uneasily as he reached his hands out, trying to figure out what was around him. "You can’t do this to me," he sneered, finally finding the first step. "I’ve done nothing wrong."

"Spoken like a coward," replied Dimitri with a sneer of his own. "I kind of regret that Hattie left you alone. Personally, I think you should die for what you did."

As if the universe had heard him, Tink emerged from the swampy moat, his lumbering steps silent as he stared at the man. Blind, the man was unaware of the danger staring him down as he continued to rant and rage.

"I did nothing wrong," he growled, his next step missing Tink’s muzzled by mere centimeters. "It’s not my fault that my wife is a whore. She sold herself for a 30 cent package of instant noodles for her daughter. What kind of man would be willing to put up with that shame?"

Luca and the others didn’t bother to reply, they simply stared at Tink, waiting, wondering what the creature was going to do.

Thankfully, Tink didn’t make them wait for long. Without warning, he turned around, following behind the man.

Since he couldn’t see the path of safety in front of him, the man continued toward the water, unaware that his life was in danger. Before he could go any further, Tink opened his jaws and grabbed onto the man’s leg, sending him sprawling to the ground.

The man screamed as his femur snapped in two, but it wasn’t enough to deter Tink. Clamping down on his prey, he started dragging the man the rest of the distance toward the swamp and where Snowflake was waiting.

After all, a good husband always made sure to provide food for his wife.

A wedding ring fell out of the man’s pocket as he scrambled to dig his fingers into the wet ground. Begging, he pleaded for one of the men to save him, but they all turned a deaf ear to his cries.

Finally, when the man had been dragged under, Salvatore walked over to the wedding ring and picked it up.

"It’s dirty," came Hattie’s voice from the front door. "I don’t want it in my house."

The men spun around, shocked that they hadn’t heard her approach. Dante glared at Eric as if it was all his fault that they were caught, but the other man simply shrugged. No one could control the Devil, least of all, her men.

Salvatore’s eyes narrowed as he looked down at the plain gold band he was holding between two fingers. "You sure?" he asked, not knowing what to do with it. Since she didn’t want it in her house, the only options were to throw it in the moat or bring it back to the real world.

"Yes," hissed Hattie, her eyes never leaving the ring. "It was meant to symbolize a never ending love. The kind that every little girl dreams about. I wonder if his wife continued her dreams of a perfect live as he was devouring their daughter."

Once again, the men froze, their eyes going wide as they looked at the ring in a new light.

"If it means anything, Tink ate him," said Ronan after a moment. His soft chuckle broke the stillness, but Hattie didn’t so much as smile.

"I’m sorry," sighed Chang Xuefeng. "You shouldn’t have to be contaminated by people like him."

"No," Hattie agreed as Eric pulled her against his chest. "But I will defiantly remember him."

"I hate that you have to grant wishes," said Désiré after another minute. "They always seem to cost you so much more than the wish-maker. Is there any way you... can stop?"

"Why?" asked Hattie, finally dragging her eyes away from the ring and to her Sin. "I think it’s fun," she continued as a smile graced her face. "People lie. Even to themselves... especially to themselves. It’s fun to make them face that lie, head on. After all, a wish is a dream your heart makes. What better way to see into a person’s heart than through their wish?"
