Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Staged?
He looked at the thugs with narrowed eyes and crossed his arms over his chest.
"I don’t know who you guys are," Adam said in a firm voice.
"But if she doesn’t want to go with you, she’s not going anywhere."
The thug leader snorted. "Look, buddy, this ain’t your business. Just step aside and hand her over."
Adam didn’t move an inch. "I don’t think so. You better leave before things get messy."
The second thug scoffed, trying to intimidate him. "Oh yeah? What are you gonna do? Fight all three of us?"
Adam smirked slightly. "If I have to. But trust me, you don’t want to test me."
The thugs exchanged nervous glances.
Adam’s confidence made them hesitate.
He looked strong, and his stance showed that he knew how to fight. The leader gritted his teeth, clicking his tongue in annoyance.
"Tch! Fine, you win today," he spat. "But don’t think this is over!"
With that, the three thugs turned around and left, muttering angrily to themselves. Emily sagged in relief, still clutching Mary’s arm.
"Oh my god..." she whispered, taking deep breaths.
"Thank you... Thank you so much! You saved me!" She wiped her fake tears, looking up at Adam and Mary with gratitude. "I don’t know what I would have done without you!"
"Are you alright?" Mary asked worriedly, rubbing Emily’s back.
"I... I think so..." Emily sniffled. "I just... I have to repay you somehow! I can’t just walk away after you protected me!"
Adam waved a hand. "No need for that. Just stay safe."
"No!" Emily said firmly.
"You don’t understand. I’m not just some random woman. I... I’m a rich heiress. Those people wanted to take away my money, hence I was running away from them. But I want to thank you!"
She reached into her bag, fumbling as if searching for something valuable. Then, she pulled out a heavy gold bar and a small pouch.
"Here!" she said, handing them over to Adam and Mary.
"This is a 1.8 kg gold bar! Please, take it as a token of my gratitude!"
Mary’s jaw dropped. "W-What?! We can’t take this! It’s too much!"
"No, no, please!" Emily insisted.
"I have more than enough. You saved me! This is nothing compared to what you did for me."
Adam frowned, hesitating. "But this... This could be fake or—"
He felt as if he was getting scammed.
"Then check it!" Emily interrupted. "Let’s go to a gold shop right now. I want you to see that it’s real!"
Adam and Mary exchanged looks, still stunned.
Eventually, they agreed, and the three of them went to a nearby gold shop.
The shop owner inspected the gold carefully, weighing it and running several tests. After a few minutes, he looked up and smiled.
"Congratulations," he said. "This gold is completely real. It’s worth a fortune."
Mary covered her mouth in shock. Adam felt like his legs would give out. Emily beamed at them. "See? I wasn’t lying. Now, take it. Please."
Adam swallowed hard, looking at the gold in disbelief.
"No...no...we can’t..."
"Oh, please don’t be shy. These gold bars mean nothing to me. They are as cheap as $20 for me." Emily waved off as if it was truly nothing for her.
"My name is Emily." Emily introduced, and as she said so, she passed a receipt of the gold to them.
Adam and Mary hesitated for a long while and only after Emily’s repeated insistence did they take the gold.
"I am Adam and she is my wife Mary." Adam introduced.
Emily smiled warmly. "It’s nice to meet you both. And I’m really, really grateful for what you did today."
Mary still looked unsure, glancing at the gold in her hands.
"But Emily, this is too much... Are you really sure about this?"
Emily let out a soft laugh.
"Of course! What’s the use of all my wealth if I can’t thank the people who helped me? Besides," she lowered her voice, looking around as if checking for eavesdroppers,
"I need a little favor from you both."
Adam’s eyebrows furrowed.
"A favor?"
Emily nodded and leaned in. "It’s nothing dangerous, don’t worry. I just need a place to stay for a few days. Just until I can figure out my next move."
Mary’s eyes widened. "Stay? With us?"
Emily nodded eagerly.
"Yes! I promise I won’t be any trouble! I can even pay rent if you want!"
She bit her lip and looked at them with hopeful eyes. "Please? I don’t know anyone else I can trust."
Adam and Mary exchanged a glance.
This was all happening so fast. First, the gold, and now this? It felt too unreal.
Mary hesitated but then sighed. "We don’t have a big place..." fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Emily quickly waved her hands.
"I don’t need anything fancy! Just a small space to sleep. I swear, I won’t be a burden."
Adam rubbed the back of his neck. He wasn’t sure about this, but after everything, how could they just leave her on her own?
Finally, he let out a breath. "Alright... You can stay for a few days."
Emily’s face lit up with relief and happiness. "Thank you! I promise, you won’t regret it!"
Mary smiled, though she still looked a little worried. "Let’s go home then."
As they walked back, Emily chatted happily, making it seem like she was just a lucky rich girl who had gotten into trouble.
She even joked about how her mother-in-law was like a villain in a drama, always trying to ruin her life.
Adam listened quietly, still feeling a little suspicious. But as he looked at Mary, who seemed to relax around Emily, he decided to let it go.
After all, what was the worst that could happen?
Soon they reached the apartment.
On reaching they introduced Emily to all of their children.
Lucas and Adriana frowned when they heard about the entire encounter.
They kept on feeling as if their parents were tricked but they had no proof of it.
