Chapter 278: Falling

3rd person’s pov

The hole the two mates were currently dangling over appeared bottomless. It was like an endless void of darkness and immense fear wracked through labyrinth as he clutched his mate’s hand tightly. His grip on Blaze’s stone turned hand was a little slippery and fear clutched at his throat.

Blaze was clearly in so much pain and he was panting with the strain on his entire body right now, because he was using all of his strength to hold his mate up. But he’d never let go of his mate, no matter what. He was gripping a strong pole with his other hand and he tried using that same hand to climb out of the hole, while his hold on his mate was still tight and firm, but he realized that he couldn’t.

He let out a groan as pain suddenly began to rush through the hand he was using to hold his mate, and at the same time, the pain rushed through the hand wrapped around the pole.

"You’re in so much pain because of me." Labyrinth cried out as guilt engulfed him while there rolled down his eyes.

Blaze gritted his teeth at another wave of pain and shook his head adamantly. "No, don’t say that. None of this is your fault." He insisted with a pained huff while his head pounded really hard.

"Don’t you worry, I’ll get you out of here? Okay? I’ll get us out of here." Blaze continued, panting hard as pain suddenly began to spread through his chest.

"Are you s- sure?" Labyrinth whispered right after the pole shifted, which made them swing around a little, and that movement sent pain rocking through Blaze’s entire body.

Labyrinth wasn’t blind. He could see that Blaze was in so much pain; and he could see that if Blaze wasn’t holding him up and keeping him from falling, he’d have been able to cling out of this pole and get himself to safety. Labyrinth knew he was the one holding Blaze back right now, and also putting him in so much pain by making him strain his hands so much.

Before labyrinth could speak, two faces suddenly popped out at the edge of the hole.

Their fathers, and they were very pissed.

"Look what we have here." Labyrinth’s father growled out and Blaze gritted his teeth as pain continued to creep through his body. He wished he could hurt the two men staring at them from the top of the hole right now.

"Hand him over to us." Labyrinth’s father continued and Blaze snarled loudly.

"Never!"

Blaze’s father whipped out a knife, the moonlight shining upon his bloodied face.

"Then I’ll stab your face over and over again till the pain makes you let go of this pole, then you’ll both meet your death. Surely you’d want your mate to be alive even if you end up dying, no?" He drawled and Blaze snarled again.

"I’d rather die with him." He responded sharply and both men peering at them from the edge of the hole crackled loudly.

Moments later, labyrinth’s father was reaching for the pole which Blaze was tightly hanging on.

"I’ll push this pole if you don’t hand my son over to me right now." He warned darkly and Blaze could tell that he meant those words. Blaze doesn’t care about himself dying at this point, he was only worried about his mate, which was why he seriously began to consider handing his mate over.

"No, don’t do it!" Labyrinth cried out as if reading his mate’s mind.

"I don’t want you to die!" Blaze cried out in response, as pain swirled through him.

"It doesn’t matter because I’ll die either way!" Labyrinth responded immediately, then he let go of Blaze’s hand. Blaze instantly panicked and held his mate’s wrist tightly.

"What are you doing?!"

"You should let go of me, and get out of this hole, then get yourself to safety." Labyrinth whispered and Blaze blanched.

"What about you?! I’ll never leave here without you." He shot back and Labyrinth sighed. He knew his father would really push the pole in no time like he threatened.

They were running out of time. The day was almost breaking as well.

"Let go." Labyrinth demanded and tried pulling his wrist from his mate’s grip but his mate adamantly refused, holding onto his wrist tightly, it hurt. Labyrinth didn’t care about dying, he only cared about his mate getting out of here alive and he was wondering why his mate couldn’t understand that.

"I don’t have all day." Labyrinth’s father screamed and labyrinth flinched.

That was what made his mind hardened, and he came to his conclusion.

"Blaze." He whispered and his mate stared down at him, clearly in so much pain but still not wanting to let go of him.

"I love you." He whispered and his mate appeared confused, but before he could say anything else, Labyrinth pulled on the little magic left between him and used it to loosen the hold Blaze had on his wrist.

"I’m sorry." He whispered as he tumbled into the dark void, with Blaze’s shocked expression and his scream of ’no!’

The wind whipped loudly around Labyrinth, and he was scared, but he was also relieved because now his mate could be able to use his two hands to get out of the hole.

However, to his utmost shock, his mate dived right in with him.

"No! No! No!" He chanted loudly but it was already too late.

Blaze saw his life flash before his eyes as his mate tumbled into the void, then everything went hazy after that.

Blaze dived straight at Labyrinth till he was wrapping his arms around him, then they were rolling and tumbling together in the pitch darkness.

"You stupid wolf! You’re supposed to get yourself to safety!" Labyrinth whispered through tears as he clung to his mate tightly. His mate didn’t respond, he just held him against his chest firmly.

Labyrinth knew they’d both meet their death any moment from now, and he briefly wondered if this was indeed their destiny to die together.

However, after a few moments, Blaze suddenly began to run hot, entirely body becoming insanely hot in a fleeting moment, right before he let go of labyrinth.

In the brief moment, the two mates tumbled apart from each other, and Labyrinth watched as his mate let out a ragged scream with his head thrown back. His voice was filled with so many echoes, like it was a blend of two voices, one his normal one, and the other, a scary, ancient one.

Worry clawed at Labyrinth but before he could attempt rolling over to Blaze in their tumbling state, Blaze’s body suddenly began to transform.

His arms grew bigger and bigger, legs growing lengthier and chest growing broader. Horns sprouted out from his forehead, curving upward and a mane replaced his short hair.

Labyrinth was beyond shocked.

His mate was transforming into a... a demon.

That wasn’t what shocked labyrinth the most. The most shocking was when a drop of fire suddenly broke through the dim light, slowly transforming into the sharp of a pair of wings– a fire ringed wings, and in the next moment, it attached itself to Blaze’s back. One moment, Blaze was still falling and in the next, he was hovering in the air as the fire ringed wings flapped powerfully behind him.

What was happening?!
