With Aetherna’s signal that the draining was complete, Maximilian finally released Photon Fury.
He glanced at Strauss, who stood not far behind Oldcowboy, and produced two data shards, placing them on Photon Fury’s unconscious body.
Maximilian then took a few steps back and fired a grappling hook toward a nearby building. But—
Bang!
Oldcowboy fired another shot, severing the grappling hook’s cable.
Maximilian didn’t care. Using the momentum from the hook, he propelled himself into the air.
Midair, his cape transformed into a glider, stabilizing his flight, and the jetpack on his back activated, powering the glider and letting him soar away from the scene.
"That boy is quite slippery..."
Oldcowboy muttered, holstering his gun.
Strauss said nothing. He looked around at the smoldering ruins and sighed.
It was a small miracle the battle had taken place on the outskirts of the city, where there were fewer people.
He then walked over to Photon Fury, who lay unconscious on the ground.
Noticing the two data shards left on her stomach, he picked them up.
After isolating his personal console on his wrist from the network, he inserted one of the shards.
The content made his blood run cold.
It was evidence, proof of a hidden, independent faction operating within the UEC. The files contained records of various experiments conducted by this faction, some even under the name of the UEC, with high-ranking officials covering for them.
There were also coordinates for secret laboratories across North America, both in the old USA territories and Canada.
And worse, the documents showed that this faction was highly compartmentalized, making it nearly impossible to eliminate them all at once.
"This... this is..." Strauss was stunned speechless by the evidence in his hand.
"Mr. Blackwood," he said, finally drawing Oldcowboy’s attention.
"What?"
Oldcowboy asked after checking Photon Fury’s condition and seeing that she had only sustained several cracked ribs and a fractured leg.
"It seems that... we may have a problem... a terrible problem," Strauss muttered, staring at the information in his hand.
For the first time in his life, despite all his composure, he didn’t even know where to begin addressing it.
And most importantly...
He no longer knew who he could trust within the UEC.
— Maximilian’s House —
After returning home, Maximilian immediately collapsed onto his soft cushioned seat and checked the data on his PC to see if there was anything strange.
Today had been a complete mess. He had intended to interrogate that mutant to find out if he knew anything about Rebecca Lane, but... who would have thought that a self-entitled bitch would tackle him out of the sky and ruin all his hard work?
Moreover, he had nearly lost his temper. That bitch reminded him too much of the woman who had left him to die, and her self-entitled confidence was seriously getting on his nerves.
He didn’t even realize when the image of the woman who abandoned him that night started to overlap with Photon Fury in his mind, only that it made him angrier.
sigh
Maximilian let out a long sigh.
Maybe he wasn’t as grown up as he thought, still getting so worked up because of that woman. It was a good thing he had prepared a contingency plan to counter her. ƒreewebɳovel.com
Besides, she wasn’t particularly well-trained, other than spamming her Photon powers, her level of combat training and CQC (Close Quarters Combat) was far too low for a hero of her supposed caliber.
Otherwise, he might have had a real problem on his hands if he hadn’t also had Aetherna to help drain all of her Photon energy, rendering her powers useless against him.
Speaking of her powers, he felt deeply annoyed and disappointed that she had chosen to save herself over the children... even though, technically, the "children" were nothing more than mice he had set up beforehand.
According to the data he had retrieved from the IHB data center, Photon Fury’s bioelectric vision could only detect life signatures as life nodes, not silhouettes.
Which meant... if he replaced the children with another life form whose life nodes were similar, he would have a very high chance of fooling her and making her hold back her power.
That was why he had deliberately dragged her into fighting him at that abandoned building, to make her think twice before doing anything stupid.
Moreover, it gave him the opportunity to play the villain and rack up a lot of Villain Score. Without that setup at the abandoned building, he wouldn’t have gotten such a juicy reward.
Maximilian mused to himself as he looked at the Villain Score and the energy level displayed on the system UI.

"Athel, upgrade the system to Level 4!"
Maximilian said with a smile.
In the morning, his system had reached Level 3—and now, by evening, it would hit Level 4.
At this rate, reaching System Level 10 might not be that far off.
[Ok! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ]
[System upgrade in progress... 1%]
Maximilian leaned back, waiting for the system upgrade to finish as he enjoyed watching the evening TV programs.
After an hour had passed, and Maximilian had nearly fallen asleep on the couch, the system upgrade finally finished.
He looked at the new level of the system.
