Chapter 139: Unsafe

Riven nodded slowly, his expression open yet tinged with hesitation. He knew Eli was someone he could trust, and he didn’t want to hide the truth—especially not after everything.

He could not in good faith throw Ronan under the bus again. That would only bring him more troubles.

"Yes," he said quietly. "Ronan won’t have any issues with it. We are... A couple now."

He spoke the words gently, almost cautiously, as if testing how they’d sound in the open. And for a moment, it felt strange to admit it like that—to label it so plainly. But it was the truth. Whatever had happened between them, whatever was continuing to happen—it was real.

Eli’s eyes widened, the pink hue of his irises practically glowing under the indoor light. His mouth opened slightly, a silent gasp escaping before he could stop it.

A couple.

So it was true, Eli thought. The Alpha really had forced Riven to stay.

Eli’s mind spun with terrible possibilities. It all made sense now—the reason no one had seen Riven for days, the hushed whispers and the vague answers about where he’d gone. This was what they were hiding. This was why Riven had ’vanished’. The Alpha had taken him, claimed him, and forced him to stay here in silence.

His stomach turned at the thought. His poor friend. Riven, who had always been half-wolf, half-human, belonged to neither world. Of course, he’d been vulnerable to someone like Ronan. Eli had seen it before—how the Alphas sometimes took what they wanted, no matter how kind they pretended to be on the surface.

Riven’s words replayed in his mind. "We are a couple now."

To Eli, it sounded like something someone would say after giving in. After deciding that resistance was no longer worth it. Maybe Riven had convinced himself that this was love—maybe it was the only way to survive it.

Eli didn’t speak. His heart ached, his mind torn between rage and guilt. He wanted to help, but he didn’t know how. He couldn’t accuse the Alpha openly, not without putting Riven at greater risk. And if Riven really believed this relationship was mutual, then saying something might only shame him or worsen his pain.

No, he would wait. He would be there. He would find a way to help—quietly, from the inside.

"Alright," Eli said after a long pause, voice soft. He gave a small smile, gentle and understanding, even as his mind continued to spiral. "If you’re sure."

Riven smiled back, not sensing the storm of emotions beneath Eli’s calm expression.

"I’m sure."

There was a short silence, and then Eli perked up with sudden energy, clearing his throat.

"Didn’t you say you wanted to go for a walk?" he asked, standing up and brushing down the front of his robe. "I noticed the garden is open. It might be good for you to stretch your legs."

Riven brightened at the suggestion. "That sounds nice."

They made their way to the back of the estate, where tall glass doors opened into a carefully maintained garden. The air outside was cool, the sun hanging low behind the clouds, casting soft golden light over the grass and flowers. Everything smelled fresh—earthy and green, with a faint floral hint that came from the blooming wildflowers scattered around the edges.

He could finally touch grass. Ah. How wonderful.

Eli walked beside him in silence at first. The faint crunch of gravel beneath their shoes and the chirping of distant birds were the only sounds between them. Eventually, Eli stole a glance at Riven from the corner of his eye.

He looked calm. Content, even. There was a quiet happiness on his face, the kind Eli hadn’t expected to see.

"Have you always liked gardens?" Eli asked, trying to keep the conversation light.

Riven nodded. "It was the only place I could find solace... My father hated me for my existence, my stepfamily wished I had never been born. Only these flowers accompanied me."

He did not lie. What he spoke was the truth. It was the original Riven’s truth. He would hide behind a big tree in the garden whenever he could. It was his hiding place, the only place he could be happy.

Eli’s eyebrows furrowed. He looped his hands around Riven and started to walk with a spring in his step. He was trying to cheer Riven up. They were friends!

Riven turned around suddenly after he heard someone approaching them at high speed.

Troy came running toward them, his expression tense. His sharp eyes scanned the area before landing on Riven. Without hesitation, he spoke, voice low but firm.

"Riven, you need to go back inside. Now."

Riven blinked in confusion. "But I’m within the estate," he said slowly. "Within the walls of Ronan’s place. Why should I leave?"

Troy hesitated. His gaze flicked briefly to Eli, then back to Riven. His shoulders tensed as he stepped closer.

"There are still enemies within the estate," Troy said in a hushed but urgent tone. "The Alpha will deal with them. I’ve been instructed to look after you, so please... Go back inside."

This was... Well, this was not totally unexpected. There were enemies and spies planted within the estate that were later dealt with by Ronan. Riven just did not think that it would pose a problem now. They would not act on him publicly right?

He took a shaky breath and nodded.

"Alright," he said softly, his voice laced with tension. "I’ll go."

Riven turned to Eli, guilt swimming in his eyes. "I’m sorry—"

But Eli was already shaking his head with a warm, reassuring smile.

"No need to say sorry!" Eli said cheerfully, though his eyes darted toward Troy cautiously. "Just stay safe, alright?"

Riven gave a weak smile, comforted by Eli’s kindness.

Eli then added, voice quieter, "As for the medicine for your treatment—"

He glanced once at Troy, noting his alert posture.

"I’ll bring them tomorrow."

As Riven left he could feel a pair of eyes on him. He turned around once and thought he saw someone. But Troy quickly urged him to go back inside.
