Chapter 145: This Is Why We Don’t Trust the Mist

The battlefield was quiet for a moment.

Nyrofang stood still, lowering its head slightly.

The mist slowly thinned, swirling gently around its large paws.

Zain stood tall, blood on his arms, wings cracked with glowing red energy.

He looked down at the beast and gave a slow smirk.

"So... you’re done?"

But he didn’t drop his guard.

He saw it.

Three shadows shifting behind him in the mist.

The other Mistfangs.

They’d been hiding.

Waiting.

Zain didn’t turn his head. He didn’t need to.

His smirk deepened.

"I knew you three were still crawling around."

He spun fast, wings flaring out, claws ready.

The Mistfangs leapt at him together.

Fangs wide, claws aimed for his back and sides.

Zain’s voice was calm.

"Do you think... you can kill me with this?"

Zain’s wings slashed outward like blades, tearing into the first Mistfang mid-air.

It howled, body splitting in two before it hit the ground.

The second Mistfang went low, trying to bite his legs.

Zain twisted, bringing his burning tail around in a wide arc.

The tail slammed into the second Mistfang’s side, crushing its ribs and sending it flying into a cracked pillar.

It didn’t move again.

The third tried to retreat into the mist.

Zain didn’t let it.

He vanished in a flash—

He reappeared in front of it, glowing with red-gold-black light.

The Mistfang froze in place, body shaking.

Zain didn’t wait.

He grabbed its head and slammed it into the ground, then stomped down hard.

CRACK.

The last Mistfang went silent.

Zain stood straight again, breathing steady.

He turned his eyes back to Nyrofang.

The giant beast’s glow dimmed.

It had watched the whole thing.

It lowered its head again—this time more cautious, more focused.

Then its mist thickened again.

It used Shadow Mist Field to the full extent.

The fog exploded around Zain, blinding thick.

Zain didn’t move.

He smirked.

"Still trying?"

Nyrofang rushed forward, fast—claws glowing, eyes locked in.

It blinked forward and struck—but Zain was gone.

A blur shot above it.

Zain dropped down from the sky, claws glowing.

He came down with full force.

His horns slammed into Nyrofang’s back.

The beast roared in pain, but Zain didn’t stop.

He grabbed its throat mid-fall and dragged it into the ground.

The mist burst outward.

Zain’s tail flared black and gold. He drove it through Nyrofang’s chest.

Straight through the heart.

The beast twitched once.

Then stilled.

Zain stood over the body, blood running down his arm.

"It’s over."

He looked around.

No more movement. No more mist.

The fog slowly lifted.

All four Mistfangs dead.

Nyrofang dead.

Zain let out a slow breath, wiped the blood from his mouth, and smiled.

"Done. Now it’s time to get some proof."

He walked over to the nearest Mistfang body.

With one swift slash, he cut the head off.

Then the second.

The third.

The fourth.

Each one dropped into a separate bag. Blood dripped, but Zain didn’t flinch.

"These’ll do."

He turned his eyes toward the biggest body in the field—Nyrofang.

It lay still, the air around it finally clear of mist.

Zain walked up to it, crouched, and examined the thick fur and large body.

"You’re no normal A-Rank," he said.

"You were stronger than the others. Smarter. Faster."

"You should be AA-Rank monster."

He stood up, hand glowing with energy.

"The mission didn’t say anything about you... but that just makes this easier."

He smiled.

"So for you, let’s make it simple."

He raised his hand higher.

"You’ll be my Hack Points."

---

The corpses of the Mistfangs began to shake.

Their bodies broke down.

Flesh, bone, and energy dissolving into glowing dust.

Then Nyrofang’s massive form started to melt away.

Its dark mist rose into the air and vanished.

Zain watched the bodies vanish completely.

When the light faded, the battlefield was clean.

It was like nothing had happened.

He glanced at his wristband and saw the new total.

"One million..."

He nodded once.

"That’s good. Really good."

But then he exhaled and shook his head.

"Still far from my goal."

His wings faded. His horns shrank.

His body relaxed as the transformation ended.

Zain stretched his arms once, then looked up at the sky.

"It’s not enough," he said softly. "But it’s progress."

He turned away from the ruins, walking across cracked stones and empty fog.

"Let’s head back."

He smirked to himself.

"Wonder what the old man will say when he sees this."

---

Zain walked back into the Hero Association building.

Four wrapped bags slung over his shoulder.

The front doors slid open as he entered, and the familiar blue-eyed mission robot lit up to greet him.

"Welcome back, Heavenly Demon," it said.

"Do you wish to report mission results?"

Zain smirked and dropped the bags onto the desk with a thud.

"Yeah. Here’s your proof."

The robot’s scanners lit up as it examined the contents.

One by one, the Mistfang heads were confirmed.

"Target verification in progress..."

Zain leaned against the counter casually, arms crossed.

The robot’s voice returned.

"Confirmed. Four Mistfangs eliminated. A-Rank threat level. Mission success."

Zain raised an eyebrow. "No mention of the big one?"

The robot paused. "No data submitted regarding an additional beast."

Zain clicked his tongue. "Of course not. That one wasn’t listed."

He shrugged. "Doesn’t matter."

The robot continued, "Reward transferring—100,000 credits. Bonus applied for solo completion."

Zain nodded. "Nice."

The robot added, "Would you like to take another mission?"

Zain waved a hand. "Not now. I’ll pick something later."

The robot blinked. "Understood. Have a safe recovery period."

Zain picked up the empty bag and turned to leave.

As he walked away, he muttered, "If only you knew what else I just killed."

He pushed open the door, heading out with a grin.

"One million down... more to come."
