Chapter 48: Chapter 47: A Bag of Dried Persimmons

From the first day Xu Xiuxiu arrived in this world, she knew that the folk customs of the 1980s were relatively simple and straightforward. She had thought that the original host, with her peculiar ways, was an exception. However, as time passed, Xu Xiuxiu slowly realized that there were no shortage of women who were as troublesome as the original host.

After sternly punishing Song Chengguang last night, Xu Xiuxiu felt both distressed and guilty, and she could hardly bear to lift her head fully in front of Song Yuanhuan. In the morning, after Song Yuanhuan finished his run and had breakfast at the canteen, he left for training, full of vigor. Xu Xiuxiu and Song Chengguang lingered in bed for a while before getting up. The white porridge had cooled just right, and it was no longer too hot, making it easy to swallow.

"Auntie, are you at home? Nannan is here to play with you." While Xu Xiuxiu was still inside the house drinking porridge with Song Chengguang, the sound of knocking and Zhao Nan’s excited calls came from outside.

"Coming," Xu Xiuxiu replied and went to open the door, "Nannan, you’re up early! Come on in and have a seat!" fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

"Auntie, this is a gift my dad asked me to bring you." As soon as Xu Xiuxiu opened the door, Zhao Nan immediately lit up with a smile and handed over the bag of dried persimmons he was carrying, "These are dried persimmons mailed over from my grandparents’ place in my hometown. They’re really sweet. My dad said to give you some to try, and if you like them, I can bring you more tomorrow."

"Why did you bring so much?" Xu Xiuxiu asked as she felt the weight of the bag.

"It’s not a lot!" Zhao Nan shook his head, not feeling it was too much at all. He actually thought he had brought too little; there was still a big bag of dried persimmons at home. Eating too much of it could make you bitter in the mouth and it’s not worth much. Otherwise, his grandparents wouldn’t have sent so many.

"Nannan, have you had breakfast?" Upon hearing this, Xu Xiuxiu knew that Zhao Nan and his father, Zhao Jian Country, were probably not overly concerned, so she put the dried persimmons down on the table and asked Zhao Nan with lowered eyes.

"I’ve eaten," Zhao Nan replied a little embarrassedly. He hadn’t eaten much for breakfast, thinking of coming to see Aunt Xiuxiu, he had hastily finished a steamed bun, and now it seemed like he had digested most of it after running all the way here.

Seeing that he said he had eaten but was still eyeing the breakfast on the small dining table with a drooling look, Xu Xiuxiu couldn’t help laughing and picked up a set of bowl and chopsticks. "Then, do you want to eat a little more? My brother and I can’t finish it all." Song Yuanhuan had served a generous portion, and her own appetite wasn’t large, so there would definitely be leftovers. Song Yuanhuan had already left for training, and there was no one else to help clean up the remains. Wasting food in the military was frowned upon, and she had been worrying about it. If Zhao Nan could help eat some, that would solve one of her little problems.

"Okay! Then I’ll help Auntie eat a bit," Zhao Nan nodded after scratching his head shyly.

As soon as she heard his reply, Xu Xiuxiu immediately passed the bowl and chopsticks to Zhao Nan. Thankfully, Zhao Nan was a young lad with strong eating capabilities – he ate as much as Xu Xiuxiu served, until his belly was round and his little face was a bit contorted from the fullness.

"Nannan, you must not eat so desperately in the future." This wasn’t something extravagant like dragon liver and phoenix gallbladder – was it necessary to eat every last bit? If you ruin your stomach by overeating, what then? Xu Xiuxiu expressed her concern.

"It’s okay, Auntie, I digest food really fast," Zhao Nan said as he walked back and forth in the room, patting his little belly.

Song Chengguang, feeling threatened by Zhao Nan’s impressive eating prowess, also made sure to eat plenty for breakfast. Now, both of them were walking back and forth inside the room to aid digestion, with both little boys wearing somewhat pained expressions, adorably comical to behold!

After Xu Xiuxiu had tidied up the bowls and chopsticks, the two little fellows were still frowning. Xu Xiuxiu started to worry a bit, hoping nothing was wrong with the food they ate!

"Let’s go outside for a walk to aid digestion," Xu Xiuxiu said, seeing the children both sporting little bellies that didn’t look too good. She was somewhat uneasy as well and, having finished her tasks, decided to take the pair out for some fresh air.

"Nannan, take good care of your little brother," she instructed, since they were going out specifically to help digest the food, Xu Xiuxiu didn’t put Song Chengguang in the stroller. Instead, she allowed the youngster to hold hands with Zhao Nan and walk ahead while she followed behind them.

Both little ones were boys, and Zhao Nan happened to be very sensible. From behind, the sight of their linked hands was exceptionally harmonious. However, Song Chengguang was muttering nonstop; every once in a while, he would blurt out something that Zhao Nan couldn’t understand. This caused Zhao Nan to turn his head back, looking at Xu Xiuxiu with a headache every now and then.

Xu Xiuxiu was well aware of her son’s chatty nature and could only pretend to ignore Zhao Nan’s occasional pleading glances for help.

Before long, the trio reached the military community’s family territory.

Although it was still early, the military base was always bustling in the mornings. It was just past eight o’clock, and a bunch of older children had already taken over the grassy lawn. Seeing Zhao Nan leading Song Chengguang, Erya, who had lost a front tooth the night before, immediately called out excitedly, "Zhao Nan, why are you so late today? Come on, everyone’s waiting for you to be ’it’!" The little girl hadn’t forgotten Zhao Nan’s promise to be ’it’ today in their game of tag.

"I got it!" Zhao Nan replied and turned to look at Xu Xiuxiu.

Seeing Zhao Nan’s questioning expression, Xu Xiuxiu immediately said, "Go ahead and play, Nannan!" She then stepped forward to take the wobbly Song Chengguang by the hand.

"Call me if you need anything, Auntie," Zhao Nan said, looking back at his little brother Song Chengguang.

Xu Xiuxiu nodded and led Song Chengguang towards a group of military wives. Originally, she had thought of letting Song Chengguang play with the other children like the day before, but seeing how none of the children had toys and were either grabbing mud or plucking grass, Song Chengguang, who was a bit fastidious, hesitated to touch anything. But staying amongst them, he would still end up getting dirty.

Xu Xiuxiu couldn’t quite come to terms with this. She couldn’t bear the thought of her adorable and cute little ball turning into a mud ball.

"Major Song’s wife, come over here and take a seat," called Yan Molin from the shady spot where a group of military wives was seated.

Xu Xiuxiu, holding Song Chengguang’s hand, approached but noticed that Ma Xiaohua wasn’t among them. There were a few military wives Xu Xiuxiu had just met yesterday and a few she didn’t recognize. As she drew closer, all eyes were almost unwaveringly fixed on her, which made her quite embarrassed.

"Is this your son?" Yan Molin asked gently, still looking at Song Chengguang, who Xu Xiuxiu was holding, "He’s very cute." Complimenting him, envy shone in her eyes—she had been married for three years without getting pregnant, and her abundant maternal love was spilling over aimlessly.

Xu Xiuxiu nodded in response, "He looks cute, but he can actually be quite naughty." Those without children can’t understand this kind of trouble.
