My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World-Chapter 389: The Iron Capital
Chapter 389: The Iron Capital
The night before the battle, I was too nervous to sleep, so I took a stroll around the base and sat at the top of the ice wall covering us, giving me ample view of the capital ahead.
While I delved into my thoughts, I was interrupted by Fuego, who came to check on the egg that I kept carrying in my backpack.
When he picked it up, he closed his eyes and gently pressed his forehead against it, making me see the MP flowing out of him into the egg.
"Why do you do that, Fuego?" I asked.
"Do what?" the dragon answered with a question without opening his eyes.
"I can see you are transferring a lot of MP—Why?" I clarified.
Fuego stayed silent for a minute, and when he stopped his transferral, he gave the egg back to me and locked his eyes with mine.
"It’s my counter-measure..." Fuego said.
"For what?" I kept asking, but the dragon broke eye contact with me.
Noticing that he didn’t feel like answering, I brushed it off, believing that he had a good reason for his actions.
At some point, I fell asleep atop the wall, but I woke up the next morning inside one of the tents with Melina and my companions, making me smile since I knew Fuego brought me there.
Still, my smile was instantly wiped off my face as soon as I remembered that the battle for the capital was about to begin.
All of the different groups of soldiers were split up and asked to stand in formation, and while our largest unit would advance towards the front gates, smaller teams would go to the side gates.
Each soldier, warrior, and mage in our army was given a set of MP potions, healing potions, and the curse-alleviating potion that Reinar made in case they had the chance to heal enemy soldiers during the battle.
Once the soldiers were in their positions, Frost stood up atop the wall of our base and began casting the ice knights’ spell.
Raising his arm forward, a massive arcane circle appeared in front of our troops, materializing thousands of ice knights that quickly stood in organized rows.
However, instead of giving the ice knights weapons, Frost gave them chains that they would use to seize the enemy soldiers instead of killing them and a shield to protect themselves.
When all of the ice knights were created, Melina gave Frost an MP(+) potion to regain his powers and followed it up by casting his mist spell all over the battlefield. However, the dragon controlled it so that it was denser on the side of the enemy troops.
With their visibility reduced, it would be easier to have the enemy soldiers land on our traps. Moreover, Frost’s ice knights weren’t affected by the mist, so they would have a huge advantage when fighting inside of it.
Still, Frost knew that once our troops got closer to the gates, he would have to dispel the mist, or it could hinder our progress, too.
During our preparations, we could see the devil’s army getting in formation in front of the city walls until the mist covered our sight. Nonetheless, Frost was able to tell if there were any strange movements inside of his mist cloud, so we weren’t afraid of a surprise attack.
My plan was to have the enemy troops advance first so that they could get closer to our traps, but after seeing that they weren’t moving, we decided to incite them by shooting our freezing boulders with the catapults.
The dwarves were the ones in charge of the machinery, and as soon as it landed, the enemy soldiers started rushing ahead.
At that moment, our troops started advancing, with the ice knights in the vanguard, the warriors on the sides, and the mages on the back.
The dense mist was cut off right before our trap under the snow, so our soldiers knew exactly where to stop their advance.
"It’s our turn..." I said to Melina, who stood beside me, watching the events unfold.
Fuego and Arashi turned into their dragon forms since we were going to fly all the way to the Steel Castle inside the capital, where we would be able to open the gates to the city.
However, it wasn’t just the two of us with the dragons, as we were taking Vespera, Yoru, Nessa, and Harvey with the Sephyr knights.
I got on Fuego’s back while Melina climbed on top of Arashi, and when our team was ready, we began our quick flight to the city, which only took a few minutes for them to travel across the battlefield.
The entire front gate of the city was shrouded in Frost’s mist, and when we left the area of his spell, we found ourselves flying atop the Iron Capital, where we could see the iron walls diving the city into different rings.
In the center, we spotted the massive building known as the Steel Castle, where we felt a torrent of demonic energy, making Melina, Vespera, and I jump down toward it.
The plan was for us to enter the castle and kill the devils as fast as possible. Meanwhile, the dragons turned around and took the Sephyr knights to the walls, where they jumped down to take care of their defenses and open the gates.
Before landing, we hovered in the air for a brief moment and drank an invisibility potion, wanting to use it to scout the entire castle before engaging in battle.
Not being able to destroy and kill everyone in our path was a huge handicap since it was much easier than trying to save them. Still, just because it was hard, it didn’t mean we wouldn’t try.
As the potion began the countdown, we quickly went down to the Steel Castle and used a window to enter into a random room.
"Why is it so clean...?" I pondered, noticing that the bedroom we infiltrated was spotless.
"Is it the emperor’s room?" Melina wondered.
"It’s a bit small. Could be for a family member..." I continued.
Suddenly, we heard a loud noise coming from somewhere in the castle, bringing us out of our thoughts and focusing on our mission.
