Chapter 390: Grul’s Struggle

After infiltrating the Steel Castle with the help of our invisibility potions, we entered through a strangely spotless bedroom, which seemed like nobody used it but was still kept clean.

Thankfully, there weren’t many guards inside the castle, so we were able to rush through the hallways without caring too much about the noise we made.

When we got closer to the throne room, we heard voices coming from inside, making us slow down to listen attentively.

"So, it already started..." said the voice of an unknown man.

"That’s right. We will have no opposition in the entire continent after this battle," Baelzor replied.

While we kept hearing the conversation, we entered the room, still invisible, and we noticed that Baelzor was talking to a man sitting on the throne.

’That must be the emperor...’ I thought, detailing his features and noting that he resembled his brother a little, whom Jackson had saved a few days prior.

"Good—What will you do about the sages?" the emperor asked, wholly indifferent to the fact his city was getting attacked.

"Don’t worry about them. We have our methods..." said Baelzor, getting interrupted by someone coughing beside a tall pillar on the side of the throne room.

*cough, cough*

"Hey, you better shut up if you want to keep your other eye!" Baelzor shouted as an angry vein popped on his forehead.

Melina and I silently walked to the side of the pillar to see who was there, and we were shocked to see Grul, the imp, chained to a wall by the neck.

The creature had his face full of blood, missing an eye that seemed like it was ripped out, and both of his arms were severed.

"This will be an example of what happens when you ignore my orders. When I ask you something, you answer truthfully..." Baelzor said to Grul, who couldn’t even look up from all the pain.

"How come that imp didn’t talk? I thought you were the Imp Lord," the emperor commented, leaning his head on his hand with boredom.

"It is said that one in one million demons are born different. They develop emotions and affection for others—Quite sickening..." Baelzor replied.

’So, one in one million demons are good people?’ I thought, believing that we were pretty lucky since we knew at least three.

Still, hearing them talk made us realize that Grul had been brutally tortured to gather information about us, and his horrible state confirmed that he wasn’t complying with the devils.

Seeing the emperor acting so nonchalantly in front of the devil while their capital was being attacked made me remember his brother’s words when he described him as an actor.

The emperor’s name was Thorun Adrelmir, and according to Thorgest, his brother, he was a man who craved power more than anything and acted like a kind guy all his life to get what he wanted.

However, Thorgest wasn’t sure at what point the emperor made a deal with the devils, who ended up brainwashing the entire capital.

I told Melina and Vespera to keep moving and open the gates to the castle, which would divert the attention of the devils’ troops.

Even if our forces hadn’t reached the inner ring of the capital where the castle was, they would still have to send a large group to defend it if it was open.

With a confident nod, Melina and Vespera left the throne room, leaving me invisible beside the tortured imp while Baelzor and the emperor kept conversing.

Detailing Grul from up close made my anger boil, as it was probably one of the most brutal scenes of torture I had witnessed.

When I first met the imp, I didn’t really trust him. However, since Dan vouched for him, I felt like I should have given him a chance.

I sent them to End Forest because I knew that the alchemists there would easily take care of him if Grul were lying and wanted to catch us by surprise.

They may have been alchemists, but they had been living in End Forest for a while, which made them much stronger than I would have ever expected, so I knew that Grul wouldn’t be able to cause trouble there.

Nevertheless, Grul not only helped the alchemists while he was there, but he also stayed completely silent about it when he was questioned by the Imp Lord.

’You have my thanks, Grul...’ I thought, but the rage I was feeling was overwhelming me.

’Screw it,’ I continued, taking out my bo and appearing right behind Baelzor.

As my weapon was coated in a fiery blaze, my invisibility wore off since I released too much MP, and the devil managed to react quickly enough to raise an arm to defend himself.

Nonetheless, my attack flung him to the side of the room, making him crash against a steel pillar.

While the smoke cloud dissipated, I stood in the center of the room and glared at the emperor, who didn’t even react after seeing Baelzor getting pushed aside.

"Ho? This is the sage? This is just a kid..." the emperor commented with an uninterested tone.

"I have one question for you..." I muttered, my voice raspy from the rage.

"Why did you do this?" I asked, wanting to genuinely know his reasons.

"Why...?" the emperor said with a raised eyebrow, letting out a chuckle.

"Because I was bored, of course—What’s the point of gaining all this power if it was just going to be given to me?" he continued.

"Huh? So, you are saying it was too easy?" I asked with perplexity.

"Exactly. As a fellow genius, you must be tired of succeeding without any resistance against you. So, what’s the point of being a genius if everything would be given to me!?" the emperor replied, his voice more passionate.

"What a stupid reason..." I muttered, my gaze sharp and intimidating.

"Being a genius is more than just being an emperor. You could have used your talents all over the world, but you decided to do this instead—I don’t know who said you were a genius when you are obviously a fu**ing idiot..." I continued, using my words as daggers.
