Chapter 434: The First Elevator

After talking to Trachios, I asked him if he could stay on the fifth floor to guide our forces through, allowing them to move quickly to the following areas.

It was a position where he wouldn’t have to kill or fight anyone, and it could also make some of our soldiers notice that some demons possessed real emotions.

Trachios happily agreed with our task, and after thanking him for his help, my group and I took the staircase that would’ve taken us to the sixth floor. However, we found ourselves in a hallway with different doors.

At first, we thought they were rooms, but when we opened the first door to check it out, we realized they were elevators.

Each of the elevator rooms was wholly empty, and they were pretty expansive, considering that very tall demons must’ve been using it to go up and down the tower.

There was no pad with the buttons to go to all the floors like a modern elevator would’ve had. Instead, there was a lever on the floor with a number carved into the obsidian stone, signaling the floor that it would take us.

After checking out all the rooms, we counted ten elevators in total, and each of them would take us to a different floor, going from the 6th to the 15th level.

I wasn’t sure if we should have taken the elevators to the next floor or the one that would make us skip ten whole levels, so we asked Trachios if he knew anything about it.

Trachios explained that when the portal for Xalathas opened, the Demon King cast a massively powerful spell that transported a large number of devils to the inside of G’Henna’s castle.

The cyclops had appeared on the 10th floor, and he was subsequently sent to the fifth floor to fight in the Hell-Ring, so he didn’t have much information on the levels beyond that.

Nevertheless, he had heard that a portal was still open on the highest floor, which Xalathas and Drakzen were using to keep bringing more devils into our world every few minutes.

"The highest floor... How many are there?" Melina asked the cyclops.

"One hundred and one," he replied, and we all stood there in shock for a moment as the information settled in our brains.

It was clear that we wouldn’t reach the 101st floor in one day. Even if we did, most of our army was still clearing the bottom floors, and we didn’t want to leave them so far away from us in case an emergency arose.

"Well, I have an idea. I’m not sure Trachios will like it, but we don’t have much of a choice..." I said, explaining to my group that we needed to clear the fifth floor and turn it into a new base for our army.

If going up to the last floor of the tower would take us days, then we might as well completely conquer a few floors to turn them into our own resting areas.

Trachios told us that demons weren’t allowed to move freely through different levels without permission from a higher-ranked devil, which was good for us since that meant our camps wouldn’t get attacked often.

When I told Trachios that we would exterminate every demon on the fifth floor except for him, he seemed a bit sad about the news. Nonetheless, the cyclops clenched his fist with determination and said that he understood.

"I will keep my promise. For you, and for General Nex- *ahem* Nessa!" Trachios replied.

After we were all on the same page, my group and I returned to the Hell-Ring for a brief moment, scanning all the low-rank devils still sitting on the sidelines, yelling insults at us.

"Ready?" I asked my group, making them nod in unison.

It was as if a bomb suddenly blew up on the fifth floor. Arashi produced massive lightning bolts that burnt the demons to a crisp, while Frost blew cold air from his mouth that froze solid an entire area, shattering the frozen demons into pieces.

Vespera stood on the same spot as she commanded her demon spiders to attack, and the little spiders seemed to have gotten stronger since they were lunging around the room while slicing the heads of the devils.

I didn’t want to spend too much MP on killing low-ranked devils, so I just clapped my hands and released a burst of fire that burnt an entire area of the sidelines.

After a few minutes, the entirety of the fifth floor had been cleared of all demons, so now we had ample space to build a new camp for our soldiers.

By the time we were finished, I received a voice message from Sage Astra, who was coming up to the fifth floor, accompanied by Yuki and a large group of Kyotoran soldiers.

"Perfect timing. With Sage Astra here, we can keep moving without problems," I said to my group.

Once I replied to the message and clarified that the cyclops was on our side, my group and I returned to the elevators hall, where we decided to take the one that would take us straight to the 15th floor.

When I pulled the lever, the door to the hall closed shut, and the room was illuminated by a strange magical light that reflected from the ceiling.

The floor started moving quite abruptly, making us tumble for a second. Still, it wasn’t moving as fast as I thought it would.

After a minute of going up slowly, one side of the elevator room opened up, leaving it open without a wall and giving us a glimpse of the outside of the tower.

We could even see the World Titan kneeling beside the castle, but the machine was so big that we weren’t even at its waist height.

"Alright, everyone, let’s prepare ourselves!" I exclaimed, giving my team a bit more confidence. However, I don’t think they needed it, as they looked like they were more determined than me to put an end to the whole war.
