Chapter 439: Drakzen and His King

After taking the Gem Link and stowing it away inside my void pocket, our group was ready to leave the Moon Spire, and as we walked back to the elevator’s platform, Jackson and Nessa got distracted by a small stone slab in the corner of the room.

The stone had something written on it, but the letters weren’t something I had seen before. Honestly, it looked like random scribbles, as if someone was testing out their carving tools on the slab.

However, noticing that Nessa and Jackson were able to read the scripture, I approached them to ask what it said.

Both of them were standing still with their eyes slightly widened in shock, and they made me nervous for a moment, thinking that they had been given a crucial piece of information.

’To the devil reading this.

You must support the sage for demon-kind to thrive...’ Jackson muttered, reading the scriptures on the tablet.

"But... How does that make sense?" Nessa pondered aloud.

When we first got to the 15th floor, where the City of Eternal Night was located, I sensed as if there was some sort of invisible barrier protecting the place, but since it didn’t give me any hostile feeling, I wholly ignored it.

Then, it clicked. The barrier wasn’t meant to protect the place from humans but to keep away the demons.

Somehow, both Jackson and Nessa were able to come in with us without any problem, so I started wondering if the barrier was able to recognize who the evolved demons with empathy were and gave them access to the lost city.

Still, we couldn’t spend any more time coming up with theories, and when we finally left the Moon Spire, I used my voice crystal to send a message to the other groups on the lower levels.

I explained in the message that the 15th floor was completely safe to use as a rest area, thanks to the barrier protecting it from demons, and it was relatively easy to get here.

As the message spread to all the different groups of soldiers, we kept walking along the main street of the City of Eternal Night—utterly dark and empty—until we reached the outer walls of G’Henna’s castle, cutting off the path.

Thankfully, Vespera had a few of her demon spiders investigating the areas we hadn’t checked, and she found an exit not too far from our location.

When we went through the opening, we found ourselves in yet another hallway with different elevators, but none of them had the next level written on the signs.

"What’s the highest floor we can get to from here?" Melina pondered.

"This one seems to be it," Arashi replied, standing in front of an elevator with the number 30.

"Fifteen floors skip is not too bad," Vespera commented, and I agreed with her.

The faster we got to the top, the sooner this whole war would end, and now that we had a safe area for our soldiers to rest, I believed it was the perfect time to keep advancing.

On the 99th floor of G’Henna’s castle, a dark and massive figure sat on a throne at the back of the room.

Even though the seat was large, the demon overshadowed the throne with the sheer size of his body.

Behind the throne, the wall was replaced by a glass panel that showcased a landscape of clouds—a testament to how high the 99th floor truly was.

In the center of the room, several meters before the throne, a circular portal hovered above the ground, pulsating with glowing red strands of energy that came out of a pitch-black circle.

"My King... The sage and his allies are quickly progressing through the castle..." Drakzen commented, taking a few steps toward the throne and respectfully bowing his head.

As the large figure glanced at Drakzen with his eerie, glowing golden eyes, he slowly stood up and took a step forward, showcasing his unamused expression to his subordinate.

Xalathas, the Demon King, was two times the height of Drakzen, who was already slightly over 2 meters tall.

His skin was dark gray, his muscles were defined, and the two L-shaped horns atop his head were as long as greatswords.

The Demon King wore nothing other than a pair of pants that seemed to be made out of shadows and a black, thorny crown posed between his two horns.

When the massive being silently took a few more steps forward to approach the portal in the center of the room, he raised his arm and pointed his palm at the circular vortex.

"Then... The plan stays the same," Xalathas muttered, his voice deep and intimidating.

Drakzen smirked at the king’s words, noticing how he slightly curled his fingers to make the portal pulsate with more force, generating a flash of light that blinded the two for half a second.

"They took the Primal Demon as well..." Xalathas continued, his expression unchanging, making the portal produce another flash of light.

"Should I go stall them?" Drakzen asked, still bowing his head towards the king.

"There is no need. If this is the goddess’ chosen, then he’ll make it here," Xalathas replied without taking his sight off the portal.

"I should mention... It seems like the woman has a slightly bigger MP pool, but her combat experience is lacking compared to Ichiro..." Drakzen explained. freeweɓnovel.cѳm

"Hoh? Calling a human by name...?" The king asked, turning his head just enough to glance at Drakzen.

"Heh, you could say we have some history, My King..." he replied, maintaining his respectful bow.

"Either way, that won’t make a difference..." Xalathas commented, turning his attention back to the portal.

The king explained to his subordinate that when the goddess gave power to the person chosen to be her sage, she only had a certain amount of energy that she could transfer.

Therefore, if the goddess had chosen two people to become sages, she would have had to split that power equally for both.

Having to fight against two sages could be considered more difficult, but in the end, they had to face the same amount of power, even if only one or ten sages were chosen by the goddess.

"I’ll send ’him’ to deal with them..." Xalathas muttered, adding more of his power to the portal.
