My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World-Chapter 438: The Gem Link
Chapter 438: The Gem Link
After witnessing the memories of the first sage, my attention was fixated on the Gem Link placed on the other side of the room.
Alejandro and his companions were trying to stall the devils while they waited for the gem to be completed by the moon mages, but when they ran out of time, Alejandro sank the whole continent.
While his memories never made it clear what the gem’s effect actually was, I knew that I had to take it with me, no matter what.
As I approached the glowing multi-colored stone, I gave a brief summary of what I had seen to my companions. The sight of the Lost Continent before being submerged under the sea was impressive, but it was wholly irrelevant to our current situation.
When I mentioned the strange portal that seemingly absorbed MP from the environment, Jackson and Nessa perked up, commenting that they knew what that gateway must have been.
"The portal can only be opened by a Demon King. It’s how he can bring legions of devils to this world..." Jackson explained.
G’Henna’s castle had been completely conquered by demons during Alejandro’s time in this world after the ancient ruler decided to summon the Demon King himself.
For this reason, the infrastructure of the castle was perfectly altered to suit the ancient Demon King’s powers, and the room where the portal had been opened was made so that any devil coming into our world would get placed in a level of the castle that matched their abilities.
In other words, demons were unlikely to go up or down to another floor of the castle where they didn’t materialize.
However, this also linked all of the demon’s souls to the portal, and it could take a long time for that effect to disappear.
"The Demon King’s portal absorbs MP from the environment and turns it into demonic energy..." Jackson continued explaining.
To open a portal, the Demon King had to create one gateway in Hell, which was connected to the one in our world.
Killing the Demon King would weaken the absorption effect, but it wouldn’t be enough to close it, and at that moment, I understood why the continent had to be sunk underwater.
"The sage was cutting off the portal from absorbing any more MP..." I muttered, which also explained why his devil friends disappeared right as the land was covered by the ocean.
The other way to close it was by destroying the first portal in Hell, but that would require someone to get stuck in that realm forever, so it didn’t seem like a feasible option.
Nevertheless, we had the mysterious Gem Link with us, and while I still didn’t exactly know its purpose, it was clear that it was important, as it had been waiting there for us for over a thousand years.
Taking a deep breath and filling myself with determination, I grabbed the gem with my hands and felt a slight jolt of electricity coming from it, though it was completely harmless.
Using the ’inspect’ ability didn’t give me any detailed information about it, so I used my senses to determine the flow of energy coursing through the gem.
Jackson mentioned that the demons’ portal absorbed MP from the environment and turned it into demonic energy, which gave me a hint about what I could use the gem for.
It seemed as if the stone was trying to absorb something from me, but it wasn’t my MP since I couldn’t feel any alterations in my body.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Melina asked, getting closer to me and taking a closer look at the gem.
Again, I felt the gem trying to absorb something from Melina, but absolutely nothing changed, so it was clear to me that the stone wasn’t searching for MP.
When I got closer to Jackson, out of sheer curiosity, I asked him to hover his hand above mine, where I was holding the gem, and my friend didn’t think too much about my request.
Suddenly, the gem’s color turned into a bright red, faintly glowing and getting warmer, leaving me somewhat shocked as to what I was feeling.
"Your demonic energy..." I muttered.
The gem was absorbing, or in this case, stealing away the demonic energy from Jackson, synthesizing it, and turning it into MP before sending it back to his body.
There were many implications to this. Firstly, Jackson was the strongest devil who almost always kept his demonic energy utterly suppressed, so the fact that the gem was able to take it from him when his body produced virtually none of it was impressive.
Secondly, devils didn’t use MP to cast their spells since they used their demonic energy, so I wasn’t sure what the point of giving back that MP to Jackson was.
When the red-haired devil realized what was happening, he quickly separated his hand from the gem and took a step back. "What’s this...?" he asked, inspecting his hand with curiosity and a hint of fear.
"I can feel two different flows of energy inside of me... One feels serene, the other chaotic," Jackson continued.
When I tried to focus my vision on Jackson, I could sense both his demonic energy and a new, unfamiliar MP flow coursing through him.
Of course, his demonic energy was very faint since he always kept it suppressed, but I could see why he believed that one felt chaotic while the other felt smooth and serene.
"This is the first time that MP courses through your body, so you are not familiar with the feeling of it..." I commented.
"So, it’s like some sort of energy transmutation gem?" Melina pondered aloud, placing her palm on her chin, and just as she said that, I came up with another theory.
My thoughts were that the portal bringing the demons to our world was somehow linked to their demonic energy, which is why Alejandro’s devil friends disappeared when he sunk the continent.
’He was trying to use this gem to transmute their demonic energy into the MP that we humans use...’ I thought.
’Would that have worked, though...?’ I pondered, knowing that Alejandro never got the chance to test it out.
