Chapter 187: Chapter 187 - Collapsed wall

Yunfeng barely had a second to breathe. he stood up trembling and gazed at the trash bin.

The zombies were getting smarter, nastier. One of them had hoisted itself halfway over the dumpster like it had remembered what climbing was. Another had figured out how to stack its rotting friends to reach higher ground.

He stood up with a sharp breath, wiping his face. "Shit..."

His eyes darted across the alley, scanning through the smoke and shadows—and then he spotted it. Near the other end of the alley, leaning against a busted railing, was a rusty old motorbike.

Yunfeng dashed over and dragged it toward the group, grunting from the weight. Jai narrowed his eyes. "That thing doesn’t work."

"I know," Yunfeng muttered, kneeling beside it. He pulled out a metal rod and smashed the side of the fuel tank until it cracked, leaking out gasoline like tears.

"Then what are you doing?"

Yunfeng looked up, and despite the ash smearing his cheek and the blood on his lip, he grinned. "Blowing it up."

Jai blinked. "You’re insane."

"Yeah. Stand back."

"Yunfeng!!" Muchen grabbed his arm, his voice breaking. "Don’t—don’t be reckless."

"I’ll be fine." Yunfeng pressed his forehead to Muchen’s for a second, just long enough to whisper, "Just stay back with the others, alright?"

He pulled away and raised his hand. A flicker of blue fire sparked in his palm, then whooshed into a burning stream as it hit the leaking fuel. The bike went up fast, flames roaring like a dragon’s breath. Yunfeng turned and sprinted as the fire crept along the ground, chasing the trail of gasoline.

The explosion that followed was deafening. A wall of heat slammed against his back, lifting him off his feet and tossing him forward like a ragdoll. He hit the ground with a painful grunt, ears ringing.

But before he could even sit up, the ground beneath him trembled.

A low groan echoed from nearby—the sound of something ancient and angry. His eyes widened in horror as the building right next to them cracked straight through the middle.

"No... no, no, no—"

The entire wall came crumbling down.

"WATCH OUT!!!"

Yunfeng barely managed to roll out of the way, smoke and dust swallowing everything. The rubble thundered into the alley, and in the chaos, he couldn’t see anyone. Just choking dust and chunks of concrete.

"MUCHEN!! HANA!! JAI!!"

No answer.

He staggered to his feet, waving his arms through the ash and grit. His heart pounded so loudly it was all he could hear. A slab of wall had collapsed between him and where the others had been. He couldn’t see them. He couldn’t even hear them.

"No—no—no, please—" He slapped his hand against the wall of rubble. "Can anyone hear me?!"

Yunfeng stumbled through the rubble, coughing, ears still ringing from the blast. The smoke stung his eyes and blurred his vision, and the silence that followed felt unnatural. Hollow.

"MUCHEN?" he called again, his voice cracking. "Guys?! Jai?! Hana?! Please!"

But all that answered were the guttural groans of the undead echoing from nearby.

He pressed his back to a wall, heart hammering, trying to listen for anything—any sign that they were still alive. But all he heard were the slow, dragging footsteps and feral snarls of the infected creeping through the dust.

Meanwhile, just a few meters away, hidden behind a massive overgrown bush near the base of the fallen wall, Muchen and the others were frozen in place, barely breathing. They had survived—but only just. A slab of concrete had missed them by inches, and Shao had instinctively pulled them into the foliage just before the dust cloud swallowed the area.

Shao’s hand clamped over Muchen’s mouth, and his other arm kept him firmly pinned against the earth.

"Don’t move," he mouthed, eyes wide with terror.

Because right in front of them—barely three steps away—stood a nightmare.

The tall, lanky zombie.

Its arms dragged against the ground like twisted vines, fingers sharp as blades. It twitched as it walked, jerking unnaturally like a puppet with cut strings. Its head was tilted at an angle, a bone sticking out from its shoulder like a broken wing. But its eyes—they were the worst. Beady, aware, and calculating.

Muchen’s chest heaved as Yunfeng’s voice echoed faintly in the background.

He was calling for them. Calling for him.

His voice sounded so close. So desperate.

Muchen trembled. His lips quivered against Shao’s palm, and tears streamed down his face silently. He wanted to scream. He wanted to run. He wanted to throw himself out of the bush and into Yunfeng’s arms.

But the creature turned.

It twitched once. Then twice.

Its body twisted sharply—and began moving toward Yunfeng’s direction.

Muchen’s heart stopped.

Shao’s grip tightened around him, holding him still—but it wasn’t enough.

No. No. He couldn’t let that thing hurt Yunfeng. Not again.

He couldn’t just hide like a coward while the love of his life got torn apart out there.

His fingers found the handle of his riffle.

Shao widened his eyes, trying to shake his head.

But Muchen had already made up his mind.

He took aim carefully and shot at the thing’s head.

Bang! Loud gunshot rang out.

The tall zombie jerked violently as the bullet pierced its neck. Its whole body stumbled forward.

Muchen let out a breath of relief.

But it was too soon to be relieved.

The zombie that looked like it was dead suddenly stood straight.

Yunfeng’s heart leapt at the sound.

"Muchen! Are you there?!" he cried out, stumbling forward toward the rubble, eyes darting wildly through the smoke.

But the tall zombie stopped in its tracks. Its beady eyes turned from the haze—

—and landed squarely on the bush.

It knew.

It let out a low, vibrating growl, and then in a blink—

It charged.

"Shit—RUN!!" Shao shouted, pulling Muchen up roughly and pushing him behind. Jai was already moving, tugging Hana along as the creature barreled toward them with horrifying speed, its limbs swinging like broken windmills.
