Chapter 231: What really happened [1]

Spell Thief is a cold-blooded player rumored to kill anything that came in his way— Cough, cough! God damn it I choke on something again. Where was I? Rumored to be a killer with no sense of remorse but let’s just keep this between the two of us. That guy is worse than a killer, a prodigy amongst the natural-born lunatics. Instead of upholding death, he’s more or less open to something sinister as long as it gave me some benefits

"Hey! Can you stop ignoring me? I know you can hear me over there. I need some form of explanation... there’s no way I’ll let it slide," Even with Lilith’s irritable tone he remains steadfast in subsiding the bloodlust of his demonic physique

[You’re almost there, just a few more and I can see the ever-looming shadow fading away. Don’t think you’ll escape from me, not after what that girl spouted a while ago? I want to know... what really happened on that fateful day you vowed to eliminate the remnants of the Mad Alchemist?]

Backed into a corner by his deity and his brainwashed companion he sighed and turned to face Lilith frantically waiting for his words. "Sigh... what does it even matter if I told you the whole thing, it doesn’t change the outcome. Can’t you just trust the memories I placed in your head—"

"Bullshit!!!" Lilith quickly spread her hostility affecting the structures of the cave with her ice-cold aura conjuring spikes in her aid

"You... brainwashed me. As much as I know you weren’t being nice to me out of pity. More like it’s a requirement for that phony of a man-made personality to take command of my body. I won’t believe anything. Unless I hear it now, I heard that demons can’t tell a lie if they make a contract, I’ll offer my soul. Please, tell me what truly happened that day,"

What emerged from Lilith’s hand was a seal where it’ll only appear if a demon speaks truthfully. The Mark of Pledge once it appeared the contract shall commence based on their aforementioned conditions as her reward. Anything below this would have been sought to be a ruse but a contract in a matter of demons is more or less death if they fail to uphold. The backlash of breaking such a promise will gravely injure one’s physique and worst may lead to their inevitable end

[Contract: The Mark of Pledge is the highest there is when it comes to a demonic contract. Such an occurrence will only occur when the demon speaks truthfully with all of their hearts. Because it’s the highest quality contract it’s not advised for low-ranking demons to do for the backlash might lead to death]

For once Morris was dumbfounded by her extensive dedication to learning the truth that even he blinked if read it correctly. "Are you sure about this...? We’re talking about you just asking a simple question and I haven’t said my part of the deal. What’s more, you didn’t even place any terms or conditions? Anyone else reading this can tell that you’re giving yourself away... like a slave,"

"What about it? I’m already living worse than a slave, the only time I can move freely is when that personality activates her chimeric cells. That moment where she’s lost all sense and engulfed with the bloodlust of the monster can I appear. You even gave me a name, Viper... I know you’ll only believe me if there’s no sort of loophole, I’m fine with my side of the contract,"

[Why are you hesitating? There’s no doubt this is an honest-to-goodness advantage... do you perhaps think she’s lying or is there some sort of way to escape?] freeweɓnovel.cѳm

’No there isn’t... Argh this is such a pain! It’s easy but I’m in a hurry to deal with this whole fiasco. Something tells me she’s only a part of that letter, but she didn’t even formulate a foolproof plan. Someone else is behind all this, wait a minute... aren’t the three of us connected? Can’t we just relive that memory rather than tell her the outcome?’

[System: The deity known as ’The one who sees catastrophes’ has joined the player’s private broadcasting!]

[Looks like I came just at the right time... so that girl is the one he brainwashed? Guess I lost the bet then, Sage I owe you one. Could’ve sworn the blondie was the perfect fit to be brainwashed, she’s such a devoted comrade]

Morris hadn’t warned her but at the end of their conversation, she felt a powerful pulse emanating from her soul. "Graaaahh!!! What the hell! It hurts! Why does it hurt so much?"

Runes began appearing from the ground and they slowly formed a circle big enough for the two of them to fit. "Calm down, it’s not the effect of the Mark of Pledge. It’s just ’The forgotten sage’ tinkering with the laws of the world... I don’t have a lot of time to tell you all the details, so brace yourself. We’ll be embarking on what you call a trip down memory lane,"

Once all the pieces spark brilliantly resulting in their comatose state whilst they’re protected in the range of the circle. Their minds however were moved to a special place where they were held by the authority of the forgotten sage. A place filled with nothing but the vast majority of the landscape was white as the eye can see. In this place, the appearance of the two changed as they desired, Christopher Morris reverted to his figure before the trials. Lilith on the other hand had a gruesome transformation, revealing her truest form and the scars inflicted by her abusive parents

"Welcome to the world of shattered memories. It’s a place where you can recall the memories before and after you’re summoned to the World of Trials. The deities can view this place, but any attempts of hearing our conversation is impossible. I think you already know who I truly am. Vast knowledge, bountiful treasures, and even the highest adaptability, Reborn Flames,"

"A deranged lunatic better fits your description... I can’t believe you’re the type who inserts himself in one of his novels. But I can respect that you didn’t make yourself the main character. That’s by far the worst, so is this the entrance?" She later saw a white door leading to who knows where closing in their lives

"I’ll take that as a compliment. Sorry to say that I’m not a snowflake who’s scared of monsters and a wuss when it comes to killing. Follow me, this isn’t my first rodeo. I came here a while back when one of my memories got blurry. I know this place like the back of my mind," Once the door opens it eventually closed upon their entrance

The blank and empty space began to change with the arrival of its unlikely visitors. Fragments of memories displayed as shards float wherever they go, some were mixed with Morris, and others were Lilith. The farther they go the memories the others stumbled upon in the present in the demon realm, along with their experience in the labyrinth. Eventually, they found a door written on behalf of Christopher’s final moments in the first trial

[System: Do you wish to dive into this selected memory?]

"We’re here... this is right after I ousted the Mad Alchemist after he pissed me off for the very last time. You can go by yourself but just this once I’ll guide you,"

Lilith was confused by his change of heart and she came to look shaken after she recalled his words. "Ew! Do you think I’m worried about your well-being? All I’m saying is that this place is too much for the weak-minded. That includes you, why did you think you got brainwashed? Just saying that you might confuse this with reality or some shit,"

She brushes away her worries and says. "Fine, can you please guide me? As much as I hate to say it, you’re the one who’s well-versed in this place compared to me. I don’t even want to see myself fawning over the past when I recently just moved on and accepted the present. Hands off you fucker!"

Morris was unshaken by her words and kept on holding her hand. "Can you shut the fuck up? I hate this more than you, but this is the only way to accurately guide you on the memory lane. One wrong move and you can easily say goodbye to reality since this could easily trap anyone,"

The door opened and they found themselves in Morris’s room before they left the first trial. It was the mansion he and Jin had rented and a second later, the two saw his past self jumping off the balcony of his room. They shortly followed after the authority of his deity granted the both of them to freely move in the shattered world

"I just noticed but I haven’t cut my hair. It’s pretty long, should I have it cut after the fourth trial—"

"Are you fucking kidding me right now? Get a move on, I want to see the memories— Grrrr! Quit pulling my arm you prick!"

"Didn’t I tell you that I’ll guide you? This isn’t as easy as you think, plus can we skip this part? I probably said something cringey—"

Before he could lead her away from the scene his fragmented self spouted the words he uttered in that moment. "Darkness shall rise to consume you wasteless pest... fear not for the emissary of hell is swift with his duty. I will take your life for it is right and just, for you sinners shall pay the ultimate price. For meddling with the flow of fate you shall pay with your life,"

[System: The two deities that the player has known are laughing at your outrageous past!]

"Pffft! Hehehe, sorry I got off topic. Can we go now? Ahahahaha!" Even Lilith couldn’t resist the urge and the three of them laughed at the past he wished to ignore
