Chapter 37: The queen

(Time remaining until the next quest: 2 days.)

(Sub-quest: Kill the Blood Sucker Queen.)

...

Adonis was the first to launch himself forward, his fist enveloped with mana as he ran through the group of mosquitoes blocking his path.

To him, they did not differ from bugs—only bigger.

While he was rampaging through their midst with only his fists, Seo was flanking, trying to take them out from the sides and stop them from surrounding Adonis since he had so foolishly entered their center.

Thanks to her unique skill, (Justice of a Maiden), which allowed her to use a fraction of chaos energy, she was able to easily slice through the Blood Suckers.

Jayhan was a bit worried they wouldn’t be able to hold up on their own, but they were proving otherwise.

[You have killed a Blood Sucker.]

[You have gained 200 coins.]

Jayhan had just sliced the head off a Blood Sucker and held it in his hand.

Behind him were the dead bodies of the other monsters he had killed, their corpses scattered on the ground like ants.

He then looked to the side at some of the humans who were lucky to be alive, trembling in fear on the ground.

"You should get out of here. Once the queen shows up, there’s no way you’d survive it."

As though they could not hear him, they simply remained on the ground, eyes widened in terror.

Jayhan sighed.

From the left corner of an alley, more Blood Suckers began swarming out in groups.

And they looked enraged.

’Good, they are coming out of hiding; they must have heard the distress call from their colleagues.’

Jayhan charged forward, a single swing from his dagger slicing multiple Blood Suckers at once.

In less than a couple of minutes, Jayhan had cleared their reinforcements.

He took a second to check on his teammates, and though their kills were not as fast as his, they were still holding their own.

’I look like a parent watching their child play his first football match,’ he thought, turning away, the mosquito head still in his hand.

If he was going to kill the queen, he needed to focus as much as possible.

Suddenly, he drove his blade through the mosquito’s head, allowing the blue blood to drip onto the floor.

There were only two ways to attract the hiding queen: one was to kill her entire colony and find their nest; nine times out of ten, she would be there.

The second was to spill just enough blood of her soldiers to enrage her.

If it were a king, he would most likely stay hidden no matter how much Jayhan taunted it, but a queen was more violent and short-tempered.

Pulling the blade out, Jayhan placed one leg on the body of a Blood Sucker and then stabbed the head with his knife again, allowing more blue blood to spill.

’She should be getting here any second.’

Jayhan scanned the skies and every corner around him.

It was almost impossible to predict where the queen would come from.

[Game log: The queen launches out of the ground and bites your whole arm off.]

Jayhan’s eyes widened in shock.

He immediately looked at the ground in front of him, and in a split second, he spotted the wings of the mosquito sticking out of the ground.

’Smart.’

A grin appeared on his face as he took a huge leap back.

Before his foot could even touch the ground, the queen had leaped out.

Debris flew everywhere, her massive body revealing itself as she opened her mouth in an effort to bite Jayhan’s leg.

Of course, Jayhan was already gone, so it was a clean miss.

The queen was as massive as Jayhan had expected; she was twice as tall as her drones at ten feet.

Her iridescent, crimson-green body gleamed under the sunlight. Six barbed legs glowed with venom, and her massive, red compound eyes burned with rage.

With her wide, veined wings buzzing ominously, she casually hovered above the ground, towering over Jayhan.

’Just like in the game, huh, you crazy bitch.’

[You are now the queen’s prime target.]

[Name: Blood Sucker Queen.

Rank: A

Description: The mother of all Blood Suckers; the more blood she sucks, the stronger she gets.

Weakness: Poison.

Coins per kill: 3500 coins.]

[Chances of survival are probable.]

Jayhan’s grin widened, his grip on his dagger tightening.

’What is this feeling?’

Boom!

It took only a second for the queen to cover the distance, landing a straight jab with her claw.

Jayhan managed to block it, but his feet still slid against the ground a couple of feet.

Regaining his footing, Jayhan launched himself forward, his body becoming one with the wind as his eyes glowed with energy.

Slash!

Slash!

Both he and the queen began exchanging blows; surprisingly, she was faster, yet he was still keeping up with her.

Until—

Jayhan felt a sharp pain in his ribs; somehow, the queen had used her other claw to land a successful hit.

Like a ragdoll, his body went tumbling over and over until, finally, he came to a stop, smashing into a white van.

Before he could even get up, the queen appeared in front of him, grabbing him by the leg and lifting him up, only to slam him back to the ground.

[You have received damage.]

The queen didn’t stop; she kept at it, slamming him over and over.

[You have received damage.]

[Survival has been drastically reduced.]

[You have received damage.]

Suddenly, the queen stopped, observing as Jayhan lay in the huge crater she had created with the impact of his body.

As the queen watched, she realized that despite all she had done, not a single injury showed on his body.

Rather, flames danced around him like fireflies, and that grin still remained on his face.

Angered by the man’s arrogance, the queen pinned him to the ground, her proboscis extending from right under her eyes.

Yes, she was going to suck his blood.
