Chapter 70: The Messiah

[Ding!]

The system repeated twice.

It was a new quest notification, showing the challenge Jung had to overcome.

<Quest V: Torture and eliminate Walt

<Reward: Ruler Archetype; Three Arcs

’WTF,’ Jung thought and said, "Not even the Chosen Brat was giving me this much, and you want me to torture him first?"

[He was just a kiddo, after all,] the system explained. [Walt is a bigger fish.]

"I guess you are right," Jung said, still looking at his white visage.

Walt was doing the same thing, and they maintained eye contact for over ten seconds until Jung shook his head and changed his objective.

"He is giving me creeps," Nero said from Jung’s heart.

"Same here," he answered, helping injured students with Mira.

The girl tried really hard to assist others; maybe it was her survivor’s guilt or grief over her friend’s death.

Jung had no such emotions, yet he did support fellow students and teachers.

However, Walt’s arrival completely changed everything, stabilizing the situation and comforting everyone.

"Everything is under our control. Stay calm; you are safe," he said to pupils and professors.

In half an hour, the entire scene was sorted out. The wounded were in the academy hospital, and others were returning via the abyss passage.

Again, Walt took this responsibility, leading people out of this scary place and taking them back to the Arcane Academy.

"What if he slaughters or abducts us?" Nero asked, but there was no concern in her voice.

Before Jung made fun of her, the system answered.

[He doesn’t have the authority to control the abyss on that level. Only the principal has enough power.]

"And what if both of them are involved?" Jung asked particularly no one, thinking to himself.

The trip in the nothingness didn’t last that long; it was the same path, and the familiar door appeared at the end.

Another half an hour later, Jung was back at the dorms.

Based on the announcement the academy made, the studies would be suspended for some time because they had to investigate the case and ensure the same thing wouldn’t happen again.

In addition, they had to pay respect to the dead, settle things with their parents, and, most of all, address the public.

Not caring about any of that, Jung lay on his hard bed, exhaustion catching up with him.

He wanted to wait until midnight to receive the reward for his survival quest and reach the Tier VI milestone.

But before that, he said to Nero, who was walking around the room, searching for things to do,

"Tomorrow, we are going to destroy that stupid curse of yours."

It was a promise and a warning at the same time, and with his serious tone, it didn’t sound like a joke.

"Really?" Nero stopped her paws on the floor. "I knew you wouldn’t go back on your words. So, what’s the plan?"

An evil grin plastered on Jung’s lips. "You know what we are going to do."

Seeing his face and feeling his sadistic nature, Nero smiled in excitement.

She was no better than Jung in that matter.

"I see. I am looking forward to it," she said and hopped beside him.

The next hour passed quickly as they leisurely stayed in the room, doing absolutely nothing.

Jung expected that Snowshade or Lilia would summon him, but neither of them could find time to meet him.

At least the system notification rang in his head, announcing quest completion.

[You survived the day.]

[Quest IV Completed.] fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

[+50% progress in your archetype.]

Warmth filled Jung’s insides, enhancing his overall capabilities and reinforcing his body.

He reached Tier V and, having four archetypes alongside the keeper, his strength soared to implausible degrees.

<Archetype Tier: VI

<Archetype Progress: 48%

Even his progress in said tier was already so high that every other student would look at him with envy.

He doubted he could receive much more benefit from the academy.

Nevertheless, tiers weren’t everything, and he had a lot to experience.

Feeling tired, he fell asleep, dreaming about the smile that seldom left his recollection.

As always, loud noises disturbed his peaceful rest, waking him up.

"Damn, what’s going on?" yawning, he asked Nero.

The cat stood in front of the door, listening attentively, but she said nothing until Jung asked her again.

After noticing that he woke up, Nero said without glancing at him,

"I think it’s about the Chosen Brat."

Hearing her words, Jung stood up, got dressed, and asked, "What about him?"

"The rumours already started, and the information about him leaked. People know the Archeons selected their champion, but as you guessed, there is no knowledge about his identity."

"Checkmate, assholes." Jung grinned and shouted, leaving the voice only in his room.

Even the almighty Archeons couldn’t predict what he would have done.

All of their preparations were made way before Jung killed Astra, meaning they couldn’t just cancel all of their efforts, rendering Jung the only candidate to inherit this status.

Jung was feeling proud and excited at the same time.

"I’m awaiting your applause," he said to his companions.

[You are dumb if you think you achieved it without my help,] Vex said smugly.

"No, my dear," Jung replied. "I fully understand that you probably had to pull some strings, but your actions are my reflection."

His delighted expression showed that not he, but also others should have been honoured for aiding him.

"Reject as much as you want, but you are on my team," he added. "And we are working together. Even if our interests sometimes do not align."

[I am stunned by your audacity, but suit yourself,] Vex said.

She had no plans to entertain him.

As for Jung, he petted Nero and said to her, "Let’s go. We have to work on your curse."

Then he went straight to the Snowshade’s office.

He didn’t wait for her to summon him; knowing that it would happen anyway, he had no desire to waste time dwelling.

And if everything went according to his wishes, the entire player base and maybe even the Earth would shake.

Jung didn’t have to linger too long.

Sitting on the sofa and reading the books he got from the shelves, he heard the floor cracking, signifying that someone was about to enter at any second.

So he stood up like a gentleman, and seeing the newcomers, said with confidence,

"Lilia, Snowshade, I am glad you guys are here to greet the honourable Messiah."

He used a specific tone, speaking like their equals and using their names.

And then...

[Ding!]

Yet another notification was heard.
