Chapter 104: Safe Spot

Or worse, what if someone tried to kill him again?

Evelyn felt a chill run down her spine at that thought, her heart stopping for a second before it raced like a wild untamed horse. No... He would be safe here. No one would be able to pass through this floor. She thought, wondering where the heck Damien was who should have been accompanying his friend.

"Doc... Doctor!" Evelyn murmured, turning around and rushing outside the room. And as much as she loved that the floor was empty a few minutes earlier, she hated it, not finding even a single staff who should have been there! She looked around, left and right and her eyes caught the front desk at the end.

But before Evelyn ran toward it to call for help, a voice greeted her from behind.

"Evelyn?"

Evelyn turned around at Damien’s voice, her eyes falling on him before shifting to Zevian who was leaning over for support. A tear slipped out of her eyes and she ran in his direction, forgetting for a moment that she was hurt and weak too.

"Careful," Zevian murmured, stepping forward and out of Damien’s support.

Evelyn reached out and as much as she wanted to hug him, she held herself, recalling how Dr. Morrow had warned about opening his wounds and hurting him. Wiping away her tears, she glared at Damien and grumbled, "Why did you take him out of the room? His wounds might get infected."

Damien scoffed out loud, glancing at his friend who was innocently letting his wife scold him. "He demanded to see you at all costs and forced me to take him out. But we were greeted by an empty bed." He defended himself, indirectly scolding her for getting out of her room.

Evelyn sniffled slightly at his words, her gaze shifting back to Zevian. "Let’s go," she murmured, slowly wrapping her left arm around his waist and helping him toward his room.

Damien stared at the couple, sick and so in love that made him scoff again in disbelief. They even completely ignored him and that only rubbed more salt to his already injured pride. From a Mafia king to a doorkeeper, his status was reduced so much because of this damn bastard. He thought, glaring at Zevian’s back as they reached the room.

"You can’t stay here for longer than an hour," Damien warned, setting the time for Evelyn who walked Zevian inside. And in response, all he got was his dear friend kicking the door close right on his face.

Evelyn slowly helped Zevian settle on the bed and stood in front of him, her face still filled with worry. Adjusting his hair on the forehead, she said softly, "I almost had a heart attack." freeweɓnovel.cøm

Zevian wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer. Hugging her carefully making sure her right arm wasn’t hurt, he replied, "Same here." When Evelyn sighed, he continued, "I was about to wake up Avery but decided to check up here once."

A small smile tugged at Evelyn’s lips, her hand resting on his shoulder. It was funny yet heart-warming how they both had escaped out of their rooms to see each other at the same time. If only they hadn’t attacked, they would have been sleeping peacefully in their room right now, without being watched out or under constant worry about other’s well-being.

They stayed like that for a few more seconds before Zevian gently pulled back. He moved on the bed and laid on her side, keeping the right shoulder upward which had the gunshot wound. He gently tucked her hand and murmured, "Come here."

"But Damien..." Evelyn murmured, looking back at the door.

Zevian followed her gaze and replied, "Forget him."

Evelyn smiled and nodded before lying right beside him. She nestled close to his chest and for the first time since she woke up, her heart felt at peace hearing his own heartbeat. And for Zevian, no medicine could work better than having his Eva beside him, in his arms, safe and protected.

A peaceful silence filled the room, both relaxing after what felt like an eternity of restless running. Evelyn’s mind couldn’t stop reeling the scene again and again, the crash, the blast of their car, the gunshot, and the way Zevian fell over her. She had tried to wake him up, fighting with all her might before her body gave up too, surrendering to darkness with him. And only god knew who had brought both of them to the hospital before it was too late.

Evelyn looked up at Zevian, his charming face now covered a small bandages at the jaw and above his cheek. He opened his eyes sensing her staring at him, his eyes locking with hers before they fell over the band-aid on her forehead. Their hearts clenched tightly, unable to see the other in such a state, covered in bruises and bandages.

"Was it Sabrina?" Evelyn asked, breaking the silence between them. She had no time or consciousness to realize who it was unlike Zevian that day, with the only memory intact was the blue car. A glimpse of Sabrina in the driver’s seat was haunting in the back of her mind and only he could confirm it.

Zevian didn’t reply and pulled her even closer, his strong arm protectively wrapping around her. Closing his eyes again, he replied softly, "We will deal with her later."

Evelyn pursed her lips and nodded. Heaving a small sigh, she closed her eyes and hugged him with her left arm. She slightly clutched the hem of his hospital shirt worriedly though they were laying right beside each other. Her cautious mind slowly started to relax and she slowly fell asleep, her light snores a soothing melody to Zevian’s ear.

Zevian gently patted her head and kissed the top of her head. He heaved a small sigh before letting down his guard and succumbing to sleep. With her so close to him, it was even easier and he too fell asleep.

While on the outside, Damien was greeted by a worried mother-hen who ran in his direction and stopped in front of him, panting and trying to speak something.

"She is inside," Damien said to Avery, causing her to finally catch a breath in relief.

"Where the heck is your phone?" Avery grumbled, gritting her teeth. Her deep sleep was disturbed by a nightmare of Evelyn getting shot again. She had woken up, panicked and wide-eyed only to find her friend missing. It forced her to call this idiot urgently, who of course didn’t pick up her call.

Damien frowned and took out his phone from his pocket. He checked and replied, "It’s on silent."

His words caused Avery to scowl and she pushed him aside, "Get out of my way." before opening to door.

"Aww," Avery exclaimed, her hand pressing against her chest at the sweet sight in front of her. Damien peeked inside to find the couple sleeping peacefully in each other’s embrace which made him scowl in disappointment. He had for sure become a night guard!

"He can’t sleep-"

Before Damien could disturb her favorite couple’s tender moment, Avery placed a hand on his mouth. She hushed him, glaring and pushing him out of the room. "You better be silent!" She warned, her eyes shooting daggers.

Damien’s eyes widened in surprise, totally not expecting her to actually shut his mouth. Their close proximity sent blood rushing through his veins and reaching his cheeks, while his heart felt like it was on a drumroll. He quickly washed away those stupid emotions by taking her hand away and taking a step back, creating enough distance between them.

Avery didn’t notice the way he tried to avert her gaze and ordered, "Check on them once every few minutes. Call the doctor if something is wrong." With that, she turned around and walked away.

Damien blinked in confusion and asked, "And where the hell are you going?"

"To sleep of course," Avery replied, raising her hand and waving at him without looking back.

No, that was not fair! Damien thought, scoffing out loud as he noticed Avery running away and entering the faraway lift before he could even retort. He pinched the space between his eyebrows and shook his head, feeling another headache coming in. Everyone was literally thinking of him as a night guard!

The next morning, Evelyn and Zevian were woken up by the doctors. They were forced to separate again since Zevian had a few drips left to finish that Damien had asked to postpone last night. Even Evelyn had her share and was walked back to her room by the nurse.

"Oh, you are back." Avery greeted Evelyn with a small smile. She thanked the nurse and assured would take care before helping her friend settle on her bed.

"Did you sleep well?" Evelyn asked, leaning back on the bed.

"Yep!" Avery nodded with a grin. She looked at the clock that was ticking past nine and asked, "Would you like to eat something? The doctors said you can have anything light for a few more days."

But before Evelyn could reply, they heard a small knock on the door. Avery’s expression changed to see Fredrick walking inside with Natalie. But what surprised both of them even more was Sabrina right behind them.
