Chapter 36: Emperor

Arren unconsciously pinched his leg to make sure he wasn’t dreaming. Unfortunately for him, he clearly felt the pain, implying that everything was true. Everything real means that... the one in front of him was Spade the Emperor.

Fuck. Right then, that was the only word he could think of. He couldn’t speak for a moment; more accurately, he couldn’t think of anything. Arren’s mind was in a mess. He just stood there and stared silly at the alpha, who was also watching his reaction. Arren didn’t pay attention to all of it.

Their silence continued for a few more minutes as the alpha waited for him to process Spade’s identity. Arren blinked his eyes as he kept his dumbfounded expression. The stalemate lasted until Arren was finally hit by reality. Accepting it was his only option, regardless of how ridiculous it was.

The alpha he had been flirting with was the Emperor the whole time. How fucking did that happen?

Arren swallowed, then murmured, and his eyes drooped and lowered. "Are you... really?" he asked, not daring to look directly into Spade’s deep amber eyes. Even though he knew it was hopelessly obvious, Arren still hoped the alpha would deny it, but the truth was cruel.

"Yes, if you’re asking me if I’m the Emperor... then yes," Arren heard the answer from the alpha loud and clear. The alpha—no, His Majesty—was directly cutting off any escape or speculation Arren might have had.

Arren bit his lips. His eyes closed, and after a few seconds, he opened them again and let out a deep sigh.

"Why?" He could not help but ask. Why was he helping him? Why didn’t he reveal his true identity and correct him? Why?

Arren bravely met Spade’s gaze. He wasn’t sure if he was angry because he felt deceived and played or because he simply didn’t want to accept that he had suddenly interacted with one of the people he wanted to avoid at all costs.

The alpha didn’t answer immediately, but his eyes softened and seemed to hint at something Arren didn’t understand.

"Is your question asking me why I’m helping you? Or, why didn’t I tell you I’m the Emperor?"

"Both of them," Arren said back.

At this point, he had forgotten any basic noble etiquette in conversing with a monarch. They were both unconcerned about that. At least, Spade didn’t seem to care much about it.

Spade’s gaze turned heavy, making Arren flustered, but he endured it and didn’t look away.

"Did you really not know?" The alpha didn’t reply but instead sent back a question. His gaze became hotter, and the ambiguous air surrounded them once more.

Arren wanted to say that he didn’t know, so he opened his mouth. On the other hand, his voice seemed stuck by something and added to the atmosphere; it was even more challenging to say.

He closed his mouth again. Within minutes, he was again unable to say anything. Was he truly unaware? No, Arren did not want to think about it.

He was exhausted from the shock he had experienced in less than half an hour. From the threat he heard from Ashton to the fact that his Mister Investigator was the Emperor.

He turned away from Spade and didn’t answer. He was trying to shake up the atmosphere.

"I... I want to go home," he said after a moment of silence. His head hung low, Arren lowered even his tone with some apparent exhaustion within.

Arren wanted to go home and rest. And as for what he could do next and his relationship with Spade, he would think about it later. For now, he just wanted to lie down in his bed.

The alpha hummed and began instructing the men surrounding them. Arren didn’t bother himself to listen. He started walking toward the car they had been in before. Even though he thought Spade was staring at him while giving instructions, he didn’t turn his eyes back.

He shut the car’s door, leaned against the window, and closed his eyes. He was thankful Spade didn’t urge him and didn’t try to speak to him. Or else, he really would panic with his chaotic mind.

Arren didn’t know what happened afterward; his mind was wandering around. So, by the time the car stopped and the driver woke him up, they were already in the Duke Mansion.

He casually nodded to the polite driver and got out of the car. He saw the familiar mansion in front of him. As usual, he walked inside. He didn’t even smile or say hello to the guards or servants standing outside or at the door.

If his father weren’t waiting at the bottom of the stairs, Arren would go straight up to his room. His father looked at him worriedly, but as he saw Arren’s down mood, he didn’t say anything.

"Father," Arren called his father. He then asked, "Do you know?" Even though he didn’t say what it was about, he thought his father would understand what he was asking. Sure enough, his father, Duke Katz, nodded.

"Yes, son." He gave a simple answer and sighed.

He expected that answer, but it still upset him. He knew it wasn’t his father’s fault, but he couldn’t help.

Arren nodded and gave a weak smile. "I’m sorry I left without permission and made you worry, Dad. I would accept the punishment, but... I just wanted to rest now."

The Duke stared and observed him, and he seemed to have something to say, but he didn’t. He nodded as he brushed Arren’s hair gently.

"Yes, you can rest. We’ll talk later."

With a final nod, Arren climbed up the stairs. As soon as he got to his room, he lay down on his bed. His eyes closed as his breathing became even. He looked asleep at a glance, but Arren’s mind was so chaotically awake. However, while his mind was active, he was surprisingly calm compared to earlier.

Arren began to consider and weigh the implications of what had happened. He also knew that denying the truth wasn’t going to help him. Everything that happened had already happened. He seemed to be overreacting to this, but it was very expected.

Ever since Arren knew that he was reborn in the novel and realized his role as an extra, he began to instill in his heart and mind that in this world, he was just an extra, nothing else. This was also why, even though Arren was born into a higher position, he stayed the same and never went blind because of his status.

He was too familiar with the "main characters" in this world. Arren also marked them as dangerous people we needed to stay away from at all costs. For him, meeting them was like being part of a storm and getting swept away by it. In his second life, he only wanted peace and the freedom to do things he couldn’t do in his first life.

Because of this, he withdrew and stayed away from the upper nobility circle on purpose. Despite all the comments and rumors about him, he still enrolled in a relatively normal school or mixed with and made some friends with those far below his status. His mind was at ease, and the mockery behind his back didn’t bother him.

Arren only wanted to escape intrigued and live in peace for as long as he could. He knew that the world was dangerous and that the waters of the noble circle went deeper than he could have imagined. The plot was about a conspiracy and the unveiling of an event from years ago that he didn’t want to be involved in.

His memories of him and the book’s conclusion were hazy, but he still had the intuition that the ’antagonist’ of this world was never simple. In his heart, he really didn’t want anything to do with the plot. After all, for Arren, none of this had anything to do with him.

Just because Arren had grown accustomed to and accepted his fate as a nameless extra doesn’t mean he feels inferior on the inside. No, he didn’t think that at all. Even though he was just an extra, he still thought that his life was much better than the others. He was only second to the main characters, that was all.

He grew up to be very outspoken and confident in himself; he was restrained, but he did whatever he wanted as long as it didn’t interfere with the plot.

So far, Arren has been doing well. His life was pretty much the same every day. He went to school, went to parties, and hung out when he was bored. He was content with everything until a few weeks ago.

He was plotted against, and the fact that, even as an extra, he couldn’t get away from the intrigues and conspiracies because of his unique identity hit him like a slap in the face. That was also his first time in a precarious situation, and he experienced how dangerous this world is.

It was as if all the things he had done and worked on over the years had been for nothing. It only took a short time for his whole life to change. But despite everything, Arren stayed positive. But suddenly, all of that became uncertain.

He met and even flirted with Spade, the Emperor. His identity wasn’t the most important here, but his role as part of the novel’s main character. Arren tried everything he could to avoid meeting each of them. Even the minor characters who weren’t important to the main plot, he avoided them all.

He didn’t want to become a variable and get caught up in the plot. Now, all of that was just a joke; he had just met and talked to one of the characters—he even flirted with him.

All of this... is a mess. He got a headache all of a sudden. Arren groaned and shifted in his bed. This is fucking crazy. Who would have thought that the person he met was actually the Emperor?

Arren never doubted Spade’s identity and thought he might be of royal blood. Well, probably because he never dared to think or go in that direction. Now that Arren knew who Spade was, he discovered that it made perfect sense.

Come to think of it; he first met Spade in the mansion. In that situation, he thought he was an investigator or something similar. But no one could blame him.

The Emperor’s identity was too prestigious, and Arren didn’t think he would visit their mansion to talk to his father about his incident. Who was Spade? He had the most power and influence in the Empire and the world.

But now that Arren knew who the alpha really was, he had to agree that it made sense and was unmistakable. The alpha’s temperament and natural air of majesty, even how he stood and that authority and dominance he exuded. It was no mistake; he was the Emperor.
