Chapter 31: His way (2)

"How was your time alone with the prince?" Linda inquired, curious about whether Hazel enjoyed herself or if she fought with Tobias. She hoped that it went well because she had started to feel guilty about leaving Hazel.

"You should first apologise to me for leaving me with him. What was the deal you made with him? I hope it doesn’t have anything to do with Edgar," Hazel said though she had a feeling it did.

Linda’s feelings for Edgar were obvious so of course Tobias would use it to his advantage. Hazel wished she couldn’t believe that Linda would accept the deal and leave her with Tobias, but she knew how much Linda loved Edgar and that she wouldn’t turn down whatever Tobias proposed.

"It does but there was also something more. Something that I need more time to confirm. Only time will tell if I am right and it will show that I was right to leave you with him. I don’t exactly regret it because I wish for you to become the next queen. That’s why I did it," Linda said, picking up Hazel’s hand to hold.

Linda got a feeling from Tobias that he was interested in Hazel. She hoped that he was because she would root for Hazel as the next queen.

"If only I didn’t know you so well to not believe that. It had everything to do with Edgar and I am a little upset that you left me so quickly. How many times will you abandon me if it means you might get closer to Edgar?" Hazel asked.

If she were in Linda’s shoes and Tobias presented an offering of something she wanted if she would leave, Hazel would have spoken with Linda first. Especially with Linda being present when Hazel spoke to Tobias at the ball.

Hazel didn’t want to be abandoned without a word again.

"I apologise. I know you won’t believe me that there is something other than Edgar that I left you alone for, but there is. I will do whatever you need to make it up to you. If we are picked together again, you can leave me alone with the prince," Linda suggested.

Truthfully, Linda was hoping to never be picked again, but if it did happen, she would help Hazel leave.

"That is not enough to make me happy, but it is a start. I hope we can have a peaceful time, but that seems to be a lot to ask for. At least it is pretty here. If there is any drama here, we will be surrounded by good scenery as it happens," said Hazel, looking around at the beauty of the palace at night.

No one could take away how beautiful the palace was, especially at night.

"The queen and prince are here already," Linda alerted Hazel. She gazed at the queen who was dressed as if she was going to a ball.

There was never a moment where the queen didn’t look like she had somewhere important to be.

Hazel looked the queen’s way and tried her best to avoid meeting Tobias’s eyes in case he had forgotten about what he promised and seeing her would remind him.

As she entered the dining hall, the maid left her side so Hazel went to where Helena was to stand in a line. It wasn’t long before the other ladies joined the line and awaited the queen addressing them.

Tabitha enjoyed how this group of young women always looked their best when they stood before her. Some could use a few changes as the colours didn’t suit them but they looked good enough for her to not mention the need of learning how to dress yet.

"For one special young woman tonight, you will get to spend time with the prince. As for everyone else, you will enjoy dinner together and then go back to your rooms. For your safety, I advise you to not wander off to places you do not know and go straight to your rooms. The guards are always around, but I prefer you stay where the maids can find you easily," said Tabitha.

"Prince Tobias," Tabitha said, touching Tobias’s arm to have him come forward. Before the women arrived, she instructed him that he was to choose Helena. Tobias nodded his head and said nothing so she didn’t know if he was agreeing with it or if he just did something to make her move on.

Tabitha needed him to start following her lead and picking who she chose. She wanted him to pick Helena as it only made sense that the star of the ball had time alone with the prince. They would get back to everyone speaking about Helena.

Tobias stepped forward, standing ahead of his mother to look around at the women before him. He already knew who he was picking but he still gave the group a look over. He smiled as he settled on Hazel who was not looking his way.

It was obvious to him that Hazel was nervous about getting picked again. He knew she had to be hoping that he was not serious about picking her each time. Unfortunately for her, he was already set on picking her again.

His mother was not going to like that he was turning down her suggestion to pick Helena, but Tobias didn’t care as he would continue to do this his way. Since he had no choice but to remain in the palace to become king, this selection would be controlled by him. Not his mother.

"You all look beautiful tonight. I wish I could sit and speak to all of you. I don’t see why we need to be separated for dinner," Tobias said, knowing his mother had to be fuming that he was questioning the palace rules.

This was his revenge for her trying to lock him inside of his bedroom. She should know by now that doing something like that would have him looking to upset her as revenge. freёwebnoѵel.com

"It was a hard decision to make, but after some thinking, I am going to go with a woman I’ve been intrigued by recently," said Tobias.

Helena glanced the queen’s way and although Tabitha was not looking at her, Helena didn’t feel like she wasn’t going to be picked. Surely, the queen had already instructed the prince what to do. Even if she hadn’t, Helena didn’t see who could rival her to be picked next.

Helena hoped that the prince wasn’t going to decide to pick someone because he worried that they were going to be left out so if he didn’t pick them once. He should pick who deserved to spend time with him. Like her. He should show interest in the person he danced with. The only one he danced with.

Hazel slowly turned to look in Tobias’s way so it wouldn’t appear rude that she wasn’t paying attention to the prince as he spoke. She could feel his gaze occasionally on her and knew that her name was going to be called.

"I am going to have a private dinner with Hazel Wallace," Tobias revealed.

Hazel closed her eyes. She knew that it was coming but she had hoped her name would magically not be said. What had she done for him to want to choose her each time? Hazel forced a smile as she was to be appreciative of this, but on the inside, she wanted to pull her hair out for him not calling someone else.
