Chapter 359: First impression (2)

"I see my sister failed to get a tutor to teach you manners. With your father’s lack of money in the past it is understandable, but the least they could have done was taught you themselves. I don’t like your attitude, Rafael. I don’t know what my sister said-"

"She doesn’t speak about you. Frankly, no one knows about you or cares to speak about you. It is only now you are here in town that I hear your name because you continue to bother my family. I’d prefer if you went back to the hole you crawled out of," said Rafael.

"See, normally I would punish my children for speaking to me as you did just now, but since I like you, I will let it slide the first time. It is normal for our first meeting to be sour. I wanted to meet you earlier than this, but your mother kept you away. Good to see my nephew is not living in some shack," Travis said, looking around the manor.

It could used some more decorations, but it was to Travis’s liking.

"You are a fool," Rafael concluded.

Travis chuckled. "I am far from a fool, Rafael. I’m a man who always gets what he wants. Well aside from the time your mother let a knight take her to bed and convinced her to run off with him. That was a big problem for me then, but now you are worth something to make up for what your mother ruined."

"You should watch what you say," Rafael said, taking a sword from one of his guards at the gates. "I won’t hesitate to kill you for my mother."

"That threat doesn’t work on me, Rafael. You should ask your mother to tell more stories about me. You should put that sword down while I am being nice. These days we have fun ways to kill someone other than using a sword," Travis said, placing his hands in his pockets as he walked to the right to see more of the manor. "Be a good boy and listen to your uncle."

Rafael knew that Travis had to be referring to a gun. He wouldn’t put it past Travis to be walking around with one to use though the law wasn’t signed away for it to be used. It had to be why he was so bold to come to the manor full of knights who would join in on killing him.

"My parents have lived peacefully for years, ignoring you and the other Normans. I advise you to leave this town if you want to live. You might not live to see that party you are hosting," Rafael said, following Travis as he walked down the gate.

"Is that so? I look forward to you trying to kill me. No one has ever succeeded in making it close to try to kill me. I would love to give you a good beating after to get you to act right. I’ve given you enough time to do what you wanted, but now it is time to be serious and get married to Siena. That is your way into the Normans. Help your mother be accepted back into the family," Travis proposed.

His parents kept talking about missing Beatrice and wanted to make things right by bringing her back into the family, but Travis wasn’t going to allow that. Not after the shame Beatrice brought upon them. His father wasn’t exactly certain of bringing Beatrice home, but his mother missed her daughter.

Travis could get in his father’s ears to remind him what life was like when Beatrice ran off with a no-name knight, but it was hard to sway his mother. That was why he was having a mind game with Beatrice to make her lose her mind and send her off for her to not be welcomed home.

Whatever was meant to be passed down to Beatrice would go to Travis. It was what he deserved after working hard to repair what Beatrice had ruined. His family had gone through the trouble of announcing that Beatrice was no longer a Norman so why bring her back now?

Travis was only willing to accept Rafael.

A little lie to Rafael would only hurt Beatrice. The moment Travis had her in his hands, she would be sent off to a place she would never escape from. No one would be able to find her when he was finished.

What pissed him off about Beatrice wasn’t only that she ruined her engagement, but there was something she said to him when she had a little bit of courage that was forever stuck in his head.

"Siena is a wonderful young lady. Her family has so much to benefit the two of us. You should thank me for looking out for you by making sure you have a good woman picked to be your wife. There is one problem," Travis said, stopping to look at Rafael. "I hear you have a woman in there."

Travis noticed how Rafael gripped the sword like he was close to using it. "You still do. Get rid of her."

Rafael was still lost as to how Travis thought he could tell him what to do. Someone could not be so spoiled to think what they wanted would always happen. He was on the verge of laughing at Travis, but then he considered the man on the other side of the gate had something seriously wrong with his head and needed help instead of being laughed at.

Not for one second did it come off like Travis was confident. For a first impression, Travis was crazy in Rafael’s eyes.

Rafael listened to the sound of someone running toward him and didn’t turn around since it was best he kept his eyes on Travis. He would join in being a fool with Travis if he looked away.

"Sir Rafael," a maid addressed Rafael. She stepped close to him to whisper since she was instructed that no one else but Rafael was meant to hear her message. "The butler sent me to inform you that Annalise is awake and so is your mother. Lady Beatrice is on her way down to take a walk."

"You may return," Rafael answered.

With his mother awake and roaming the manor, Rafael had no time to deal with Travis. Rafael would like to kill Travis right now but there were carriages passing by and with him backing Annalise for a truce, he didn’t need him killing Travis for a personal reason to be used as a distraction by the court to prolong the truce.

Travis was going to join the list of people Rafael killed in secret with no evidence leading back to him. For all the trouble that Travis was causing his family, killing him fast wasn’t going to be enough. Travis deserved to be tortured. Strapped to a chair to let Beatrice have a chance to hurt him if she wanted and for River to torture him to death.

"Was that about Beatrice? I’d love to see my sister right now to catch up and be like the old times. There was a special game we used to play that involved a dark room and a key only I had. Unfortunately, I have places to get ready for my party and trust me, you will be there," Travis said, certain of it.

He wasn’t putting together a party all for nothing. Rafael was against going now, but there were ways to pull him there and Travis already figured out what he would use to lure Rafael.

"Do as I say and get rid of that woman before I get rid of her for you," Travis said, turning around to go back to his carriage. He didn’t fear Rafael wanting to attack him. His nephew was too much of a noble knight to be seen attacking an innocent person.

Whoever the woman Rafael was spending his time with, she would be of use before disposed of.
