Chapter 165 - 165: Sleepwalking

Wearing a thin nightdress, Kate walked straight into John's bed, startling him.

"What's wrong with you?" he whispered, alarmed.

Kate was breathing heavily, eyes closed—completely unaware of her surroundings.

God...

She's sleepwalking!

"John..."

She murmured his name in her sleep, which piqued his curiosity even more.

Is she dreaming about me?

John remained still, eager to hear what she'd say next. But she didn't speak again. Instead, she shifted closer, draping her arms and legs around him.

A sweet scent lingered in the air.

And with only that thin nightdress on, he could clearly feel the curves of her body.

Why didn't she wear anything underneath?! John nearly cried. She was sound asleep, while he was growing more and more uncomfortable—tense, stiff, and unable to move a muscle.

"King of Horizon..." Kate mumbled again.

King of Horizon?

Is she dreaming about my real identity?

As it turned out—yes. She was.

In her dream, Kate was climbing a mountain. The morning sun rose over the horizon, illuminating a tall, robed figure with his back to her. His cyan robe fluttered in the wind—elegant and commanding.

It was the King of Horizon.

In her imagination, that mysterious man was him.

Excitedly, she ran to him, wanting to say something. But he didn't turn around. No matter how fast she ran, she couldn't seem to catch up. The mountain beneath her kept shifting—endlessly distant.

Exhausted and frustrated, Kate was about to give up.

Then the man finally turned around.

He smiled.

That familiar smile...

"Kate."

She woke up.

Not with a start—but with warmth and contentment, as though in her dream, she had merged the two people in her heart: King of Horizon... and John.

"Ah—!"

Kate's eyes flew open, and she nearly screamed. But she clamped a hand over her mouth just in time.

This wasn't her room.

And this definitely wasn't her bed.

Was I sleepwalking?

She'd never done that before. But how else could she explain being here?

For a moment, she sat in stunned silence.

Then she cautiously lifted the blanket and peeked under. Her face turned scarlet. Her nightdress was bunched up, exposing her legs, which were still tangled around John.

So embarrassing.

Please let him still be asleep...

Moving slowly, she slipped out of bed and tiptoed back to her room.

No one could find out about this. Especially not Queenie.

If Queenie knew she'd ended up in John's bed—even while sleepwalking—she might face the same fate as Alice, who was still stuck sharing a room with her.

Kate glanced around nervously. Seeing no one, she slipped inside her room and shut the door.

The moment she was gone, John opened his eyes with a long sigh.

What the hell was that?

He made a mental note to start locking his door at night. No more surprise visits, even unintentional ones.

He lay back down, trying to sleep again. But the memory of Kate from last night kept flashing in his mind—her movements, her scent, the way she clung to him in her sleep.

And the way her hands wandered unconsciously.

There's no way I can sleep now!

Frustrated, John sat up. He waited until he heard the other sisters waking up before stepping out of the room himself.

Just then, Kate emerged from her room, her hair a mess of sleepy curls. She rubbed her eyes and yawned. "I slept great last night. I just blinked and it was morning. Huh? You're up, too?"

Up? I didn't sleep a damn minute!

John forced a smile and rubbed his eyes. "Yeah... same here. Slept like a rock. Though my arms are weirdly sore today. Maybe a ghost visited me last night."

Kate gave a guilty smile. "Maybe..."

Then she hurried into the bathroom to freshen up.

Watching her flee, John snorted inwardly.

Kate, your acting is top-notch!

During breakfast, Kate acted as if nothing had happened.

"I've been so happy these past few days. I really don't want to leave," she said cheerfully.

"You're leaving?" John asked, surprised.

"I have to go abroad tomorrow," she replied. "I came back this time just to see you. Are you touched?"

"So moved," John said dryly. "You were even more 'moved' last night..."

He mumbled the last part under his breath.

Then, as if remembering something, he asked, "By the way, Queenie said you went abroad to investigate a kidnapping case. But it's been a while—why haven't you found anything?"

"Because it's... complicated." Kate stuck out her tongue and avoided his gaze.

But John noticed the flicker of worry in her eyes.

Clearly, whatever she was investigating wasn't simple.

"Kate," he said seriously. "Can't you stay? I don't want you to go."

"I don't want to leave you either," she said softly, ruffling his hair. "But I've got a job to do. Don't worry—I'll be back in a month."

After a moment of thought, John said, "Wait. I'll give you an amulet."

He went to another room and came back with a small round stone tablet. A red string looped through a hole at the top, making it wearable around the neck. It was one of the Mind Circles he had carved.

"As long as you call my name while wearing this, good luck will follow."

Kate wrinkled her nose. "This thing's ugly..."

But she took it happily anyway.

Because it was the first gift John had ever given her.
