What the fuck is that?!

The figure turned around to reveal that its entire body was basically made out of shadows and it was now looking directly at us.

"Umm… Hello?" I waved at the figure.

What? It could be friendly!

It seemed to tilt its head at me before it took a lumbering step forward.

See? It's friendly!

It pulled its hand and punched forward, the fist suddenly stretching forward and rocketing towards my face.

My body moved on its own as instantly shifted my body to the side, letting the fist sail past me with inches to spare.

Amber, who had been beside me, immediately drew her pistol and fired a round at the figure.

The bullet struck the figure in the head and blew a hole clean through the figure, its head knocked back from the impact.

But instead of dropping to the ground, the hole on the figure's head slowly closed up as he lifted his head back up to look in our direction, its outstretched arm snapping back to it.

Amber clucked her tongue before she lowered her gun to point her palm at the figure.

The figure was flung back to smash into the wall, its body stuck to it in the shape of a cross.

Amber then closed her hand into a fist and the figure's body trembled before it slowly got crushed into a ball.

The most disconcerting thing was that no sound came from it and it didn't look like the figure had any bones so it merely had the figure of a human but the similarities ended there.

Amber crushed the figure into a literal ball before flinging it away, sending the ball hurtling down the corridor that we had come from.

My lover scoffed, "Hmph… That thing thinks it can just try and punch us like that? Dream on."

I don't think that thing can dream but that's beside the point…

But now I guess we know there's some kind of monster on board, though I don't know if that was the only monster or not.

But seeing that guns seem to be ineffective against it, I'm going to guess that the crew of this ship probably got killed by this thing since they couldn't kill it with their guns.

I nodded at the corridor ahead, "Shall we?"

Amber grinned, "After you~"

I took point again, hefting my shotgun in my hands.

Even though I knew that my weapon probably wouldn't be able to do anything to these things, it could at least slow them down for Amber to deal with them.

Turning around the corner, we immediately stopped when a crowd of five of those shadow figures came into our view, all of them huddled in the centre of the corridor.

All of them turned to face us as one and they started to lift up their hands.

I didn't hesitate and fired my shotgun from the hip, the pellets blasting through the crowd and leaving pellet sized holes all over their bodies.

Their movements slowed from trying to repair their bodies, giving Amber all the time she needed to swing her hand at them and smash all of them into the wall at the side with her telekinesis.

She clenched her fist again and the group of five shadow figures trembled before they were crushed together, all five of them seemingly merging together to be crushed into a single black ball.

Amber then tossed the black ball behind us like the first one before grinning at me, "The way is clear, my lady~"

So cheesy… I still love you though.

We continued down the corridor and we turned another corner, this time coming face to face with a large reinforced double door.

I'm assuming this was the entrance to the cargo bay?

I tried to open it but of course it was locked. Just as I was about to start hacking it, I heard a thump coming from down the corridor prompting both Amber and I to turn in that direction.

There, the ball that was supposed to be that crushed shadow figure had sprouted out a large arm that was pushing against the ground.

Even as we watched, another arm popped out from the other side and slammed onto the ground, lifting the black ball up into the air.

The black ball then wobbled before a large head popped out and the ball slowly morphed into a torso before two legs exploded out from the back to slam onto the ground as well.

It then rose up to its full height and I realised it was way bigger than before, like it had combined five people's worth of mass to transform itself into a singular entity.

Amber and I shared a look, both of us coming to the conclusion on what we had just witnessed.

That thing may have gotten crushed but it was not dead at all…

Amber quickly stepped behind me protectively while I rushed towards the door console to connect my Codex with it to start hacking.

The giant shadow figure took a step towards us that shook the entire corridor we were in before pulling back its fist.

Amber raised up her hands right as the fist came flying forward, smashing into the space in front of her and stopping just short of my lover's palms.

She pulled her arms back before thrusting forward, using her telekinesis to push the fist flying back towards the figure.

Its arm snapped back to its original location and it pulled back its other arm before punching forward, the fist hitting the same invisible wall that Amber seemed to be maintaining to protect me.

This time, when she shoved her hands towards the shadow figure, the giant entity was forced back and slammed itself into the wall heavily, causing it to form a dent.

Amber then materialised a ball of fire which she then tossed towards the creature.

The fireball exploded against its chest and there was a pause before the thing started to flail its arms around before it got up to slam its chest against the wall, almost like it was trying to put it out.

I guess it didn't like being burned?

I managed to finish hacking the door and beckoned to Amber, "Come on!"

She didn't hesitate and followed me through the door right as I controlled it to close it shut and lock it once more.

Unfortunately, that means that our way out was cut off for now but we'll deal with it later.

For now, I turned to see where we were and just like I had thought, we were now standing in the cargo bay.

Both Amber and I scanned around the bay, keeping an eye out for any of those shadow figures but it seemed like there were none in this place.

I let out a breath before looking down at the ring on my finger, "Is this why you want us to be here? So that we can get killed by those things?"

The ring responded quickly by lifting my finger and shaking it from side to side.

Hmph… I don't even know if it was telling the truth…

But by how desperately it was shaking my finger, I'm guessing it was sincere.

Putting that aside for now, I decided to focus on what we came here for in the first place.

There, a short distance away, was the probe that was the size of a small car wedged in between the cargo bay doors.

The atmospheric shield was still up so there was still air in the cargo bay, otherwise I would be dead by now.

"Guess we'll have to free that from the door and let it float towards our ship?" I suggested.

Amber nodded, "Ries should be able to use her drones to push the probe into our ship's cargo bay so that should be fine."

Right, just need to find the controls for the door then… Oh? There's something that looks like a control room near the doors so maybe that was it?

I pointed at what I saw and Amber nodded, prompting me to lead the way towards that control room.

I noted that the door to the room seemed to have been smashed inwards and it was now hanging at an angle on the entrance.

Squeezing past the broken door, we found ourselves in what was definitely a control room with the control panels facing the direction of the cargo bay doors behind a transparent sheet of glass.

The thing was still operational and all it took was for me to find the lever that had the words 'Bay doors' on top of it before I pulled it down from the 'closed' position and shift it to the 'open' position.

There was a loud grating sound as the doors started to open, freeing the probe from its prison.

Right as I was about to celebrate, I noticed a personal terminal that was thrown on the floor with the screen on it showing the words, 'Recording saved'.

Oh? Did someone record what happened? This I got to see…
