Chapter 249: Not On My Radar

Max stared at Ronan blankly, wondering just how long it would take for the other man to put a bullet through his brain. "I think you can tell that it hasn’t been working out all that well."

"Well, lookie you, speaking like a proper gentleman," purred Désiré. "Did ’Licia teach you dat, too?"

Sucking in a deep breath of air, Max reminded himself that he really had no other option. He was between a rock and a hard place, and the worst part was that the men on both sides were ones he once considered to be brothers.

"What do you want me to say?" sighed Max, closing his eyes as he rubbed the bridge of his nose.

"I donna think der be anythin’ you can really say," grunted Dimitri walking past Max and poking at the fire. "Yous dinna just show up at dis camp, yous been here for a couple days now."

"Were you waiting for us?" purred Beau as he stepped forward. Gluttony had been whispering in his ear all sorts of secrets about the man in front of them. The biggest one was that, thanks to this man’s stupidity, Beau now had the chance to be with Hattie.

The man was an idiot, and Beau wasn’t about to give him time to regret his actions.

"I’ve been here for a while," admitted Max. "After everyone left the navy base, I followed this path, and here I am."

"Here you are," agreed Désiré. "But we all knows it takes more dan just a few hours to get from de base to here. Unless ya’ll picked it up and carried it to a new location?"

It was nine against one, and none of the Sins were feeling very forgiving.

"We are going out to play," announced Hattie, stepping forward from between Dante and Tank. "Do you want to come and play with us?"

"Play?" repeated Max, his brain clearly going offline when Hattie spoke. "It’s a fucking zombie apocalypse. There is no playing out there. There is death, horrors, and starvation, but no playing."

Hattie let out a disappointed sigh and shrugged her shoulders as both Dante and Dimitri shared a look. As Dante moved toward Max’s front, Dimitri cut off his exit from behind. "Careful with your words," murmured Dante as he bent forward just a bit. "We all know that she is the only thing keeping you breathing right now."

Max stiffened at that statement but didn’t reply.

"You sure you want him, Sugar?" purred Beau, sliding into the spot that Dante just vacated. "Cause I can keep you entertained."

Hattie hummed, but the look she gave Max was one that suggested she knew something he didn’t. And that made Max start to sweat.

"At the end of the day, it’s all up to him," she smiled brightly at him before pulling out a candy ring from her space. "He is more than welcome to watch an empty house for his friends. Hell, he might even try to get in it."

"Tink won’t be all that happy," grunted Tank, taking Hattie’s hand and kissing her fingertips. "He’s having enough trouble storing the bodies of the last group of people who tried to break into our house."

Hattie hummed in agreement as she nodded her head. "I should get Tink a wife; what do you think? That way, they can have lots of little Tinks, and I no longer have to worry about where to put the bodies."

The ten men around her simply stared at her before shuddering softly.

"Make your decision. We have places to go and people to meet," announced Hattie as she started walking forward.

"You really want me to come?" asked Max. She had hinted that she understood his purpose, but who would let someone they knew was going to betray them at their side? It didn’t make sense.

"Chances are, you are going to die. Whether you come with us and have some fun first or stay here and greet your masters next time they swing by for tea, it’s up to you," the girl replied, sucking the ring. "But I was just informed that it wasn’t really living if you were just waiting around for your death."

Continuing to walk past him, Hattie never once looked back, her men trailing behind her.

"Stupid," grunted Salvatore as he clasped Max on the shoulder.

"I couldn’t take it anymore," sighed Max as he rubbed his hands over his face. "I just wanted a place to call home. That was it. Was that really too much to ask for?"

"Yup."

-----

"Why?" asked Dante as he caught up to me. I was just walking forward with no real destination in mind, but that was also part of the fun.

"You are going to have to be a bit more specific than that," I chuckled, looking at him from over my shoulder. "Or are you channeling your inner Salvatore?"

"Why did you invite him?" explained Tank, wanting to know the answer just as much as the rest of the guys. The only problem was that I had no idea why I was offering to let him come with us.

It was really beyond suspicious to see him camping there after the raid that Réne and Adam tried to pull. Was it possible that he had a fallout with the others? Yes, it was. But the location just set off every alarm in my head.

That man wasn’t a threat to me, but the information he gave the others would be.

"He is going to die," I announced, still looking forward. I knew that most of my guys had been like family to Max growing up and that it was probably hard for them to hear that, but it was the truth. No matter what option he had chosen, the second he turned away from Luca and the others, he was a dead man. "Might as well let him have some fun before Death comes for him."

"He’s not on my radar yet," assured Chang Xuefeng, looking over his shoulder to where Max was walking behind all of us, his head down like a whipped dog. "But that can quickly change." freewēbnoveℓ.com
