Chapter 421: Some Things Never Change

Luca raised an eyebrow as he sat on the couch in Réne’s office. The moment the convoy had entered the back section of the base, Luca’s skin was crawling. He watched as Réne took Alicia into his arms and whispered something into her ear. When she replied just as softly, Luca turned around to take in the rest of the base.

The hangar bay that they had entered looked like something out of a movie. The only thing they were missing was the airplanes, but according to Alicia, Country M was hit by an EMP from Country K, and nothing worked after that.

However, the lies seemed to be woven into the truth as he watched guards holding up scan cards to the doors. Did everyone lack electricity, or was it just the second-class citizens? Either way, it wasn’t his circus, and it definitely wasn’t his monkeys. He was here to get the information he needed to get his memories back, and then he would figure things out from there. freёnovelkiss.com

"Long time no see," said Réne, bringing Luca out of his head.

"Is it?" murmured Luca, taking a sip of the coffee from his space. Really, the amount of sugar in it was making him nauseous, but it also filled him with a sense of calm and familiarity, which was more than he could say about his best friend. "According to Alicia, it’s been a little over 24 hours. I really don’t see you missing me that much."

Réne’s mouth pressed into a flat line as his eyes narrowed on the other man. "You know, it’s polite to offer someone a drink when you have one," he said, his voice just as flat as his mouth.

"This is your office," pointed out Luca, taking yet another sip of the drink. "If we are going by manners, shouldn’t you be the one to have offered me a drink?"

"No one has had coffee in years," stated Réne. "In fact, you might not want to take that mug out of my office. I’m sure that someone would be more than willing to kill you just for a sip of your drink."

Luca shrugged, not at all put out. "Speaking about my coffee," he stated, his eyes trained on the man behind the desk. "Since when did Alicia like sugar and milk in hers?"

"She hates anything sweet," answered Réne.

Yet another reason why Luca refused to fully trust her, no matter what his brain was urging him to do. The fact that someone could say no to sugar or candy? They were nothing short of a psychopathic monster.

Take him, for instance, he hates sugar and candy.

Luca hummed and nodded his head. Clearly, the coffee wasn’t meant for her then.

"Do you have any more?" asked Réne, finally just giving in and asking. Alicia had told him that Luca had forgotten everything and that Réne should act like the past four years had never happened, but Luca had stabbed him in the back more than once. How was he supposed to forgive him?

"I think I have 75 or so?" muttered Luca, narrowing his eyes. He didn’t know where that number had come from, but at his point, he just went with it. "But none of them are for you."

Réne raised an eyebrow and stared down at Luca. "Is this the point where you tell me that they are all for Alicia?"

"No," chuckled Luca, tipping back his head and finishing off the rest of his mug. "This is the part where I wonder if I should apologize for fucking your fiancée."

Even as the words passed his lips, Luca could practically taste the lie in them. In fact, even the very idea of him fucker her was so visceral that he felt the coffee fighting to come back out.

Réne’s face went white before it turned red as his entire body shook with rage. "What type of friend fucks his brother’s fiancée?" he said at last, his voice trembling. What the hell was going on with Alicia that she would even suggest that scenario?

He knew she fucked people on the side, and while it had bothered him in the beginning, after all these years, he had gotten over it. She wanted and needed something that he couldn’t give her; it was really that simple.

And at the end of the day, it was he who Alicia came home to.

Luca simply smirked. The fact that he was getting a rise out of Réne was tickling him pink. He didn’t know what had gone on between them, but it was clear that they were no longer friends.

"Speaking of your fiancée," started Luca, coming to his feet. "I need to hunt her down. I have no idea where I am sleeping tonight, and I was hoping that she would be able to give me a clue."

Réne shot to his feet, slamming his hand on the table. "Stay the fuck away from Alicia," he growled low. His eyes turned black for a second before returning to normal, but it was long enough for Luca to catch.

Interesting... he would have to look into what caused that. "How’s the voices in your head?" he asked suddenly.

"Gone, thanks to Alicia," replied Réne.

Luca nodded his head before putting his hands in his pockets and strolling out of the office. It was nice to know that, as much as some things had changed, some things had remained the same. He still loved to piss Réne off.

He just wondered where his accent had up and disappeared to.

Tobias looked down at the clipboard in his hands, checking people off for the evening roll call. It was the worst part of his day because he literally had to go through hundreds of men, fresh from quarantine, and he couldn’t make a mistake.

"Has anyone seen where Sam is?" he asked, his eyes narrowing on the last room. This one held eight beds, but there were only seven men lying on them.

"He went out around noon or so," called out one of the occupants. "He wanted to check the main hall to see what he could do for work."

"And since then?"

"Nothing," grunted one of the other roommates. "We’re not his fucking parents. We have no idea where he is."

Closing his eyes, Tobias picked up his walkie-talkie. "We are missing one male. Request immediate help to find him."
