Chapter 56: This man, do we know each other?
When Mo Liang showed up at the house later, he was in a foul mood and covered in even more bruises than Jingzhe. He looked like he had been in a fight with a hurricane and the hurricane had won. His face was a canvas of bruises and cuts and his hair stuck out in wild tufts as if the wind had taken a personal grudge against him. A large chunk of hair was absent in the middle of his head as if he had grown a bald spot overnight.
His blue astronaut jacket had been sliced in many places that it was falling apart. His right and left eyes were swollen shut. He could hardly walk on his own and he was being supported by a royal agent.
"Now this is a good look for you." Feng Qi commented. She looked at Waning, the royal agent that was supporting Mo Liang and she snickered.
Waning knew that there was no love for Mo Liang in this house and he ignored the snickers. Mei Mei on the other hand had to pretend to show some concern in case Waning was called as a character reference in her divorce suit.
"Aiya!" She stood up, talking in an exaggerated manner, "Waning, who is this man?"
Ji Waning controlled his expressions, a royal agent had to be calm and as cool as a cucumber at all times. He would not allow Jun Meilin to get under his skin. "This is your husband, there was an incident in the bathroom. We are still looking into it."
Mei Mei jutted her chin forward, frowning deeply before shaking her head. "I am afraid that you are mistaken, I don’t know who this man is. Your information must be outdated, I have an ex-husband not a husband." She waved her hand in front of Mo Liang’s face. "This man, do we know each other?"
"Can we not do this?" Waning asked her. "It is bad enough that you refused to go to the police station."
Quickly Mei Mei held up a hand to stop the royal agent. "Ehhhh... Waning, I believe that the police called the wrong person. They are supposed to call your next your kin or legal guardian and I am not his. You can check the legal documents and see if I am right."
Ji Waning turned his eyes to Mo Liang, feeling quite miffed. They had spent an hour waiting for Mei Mei at the station and not even once did Mo Liang feel the need to mention such an important fact.
Eventually when they grew tired of waiting, the royal office had intervened and the chief of police had let Mo Liang go. "I must have the worst luck in the world to be cleaning up after this fool." he thought.
He pulled out a chair and sat Mo Liang down. At the same time, a team of doctors and an ambulance that was fully equipped arrived outside the guests. The guards could not stop the royal agents who were armed from entering or leading the ambulance in.
The doctors and their staff carried in their equipment to treat Mo Liang. He was leaving for St. Petersburg the following day, he could not go with a swollen face and lips. Emperor Junjie had ordered for him to be cured at all costs.
"Hmm, Mingzhu let’s go to bed." Mei Mei was done eating. She had no plans to stick around and watch Mo Liang’s treatment process.
Feng Qi and Jingzhe also decided to end dinner early. Jingzhe carried Mingzhu and extended his right hand to Mei Mei.
"Can we talk?" Junjie stopped Mei Mei and asked her.
Mei Mei huffed, if it was any other agent she would have refused the request but Waning was different. He had been protecting Junjie since their teenage years so they had met on many occasions. He had once beaten up a stalker for her and protected her. She could not hold Junjie’s foolish decisions against him.
So, she allowed him to come up to the second floor of the house and lead him to the music room where the piano had been relocated to. Someone had brought drums and placed them in the room. The sight made her wince because she could already imagine the noise Mingzhu was going to make when she picked an interest in them.
While she was thinking about that, Waning opened a window and lit a cigarette. He took one long drag and closed his eyes as if he was relishing the taste of the nicotine.
Mei Mei crinkled her nose at the unpleasant smell but she did not ask him to put it out. He looked like he needed to smoke. "You look tense."
"That’s because I am."
"Is all not rosy in royal land?" Mei Mei chuckled.
Waning pulled the cigarette out of his mouth and said, "You are not making it easy are you?"
"Can you blame me?" she asked.
"No." He looked at her, smiled, and said, "He is a fucking idiot."
Mei Mei laughed deeply. "Which one?"
Waning rolled his eyes. "You know that I cannot badmouth my boss, no matter how much I disapprove of his decisions sometimes. This mess has sparked off a war between the Chi’s, the Jun’s and the royal family. The rest of the royal family is not even involved in the mess but they are being dragged in to pick sides. I think we both know that you are the only one that can call a truce."
Mei Mei took a deep breath, smelled the cigarette smoke and frowned. She exhaled, trying to send out the air she had breathed in.
"Aren’t you going to say anything?" Waning asked her.
"Say what?" She opened her hands and moved her shoulders upwards. "The only way for a truce to happen is if the emperor removes himself from my personal affairs. Mo Liang dared to have an affair so he should shoulder the consequences on his own.
Do you know that he almost let me die? He stood over my bleeding body after his son nearly killed me and talked about getting rid of the evidence. Mingzhu witnessed it all and she wakes up at night scared that I am dead.
Last night, when I opened my eyes, I found her checking my pulse and my head for signs of bleeding." Tears dropped from her eyes.
Mei Mei wiped them away, and said, "Do you know that he poisoned me? I have forgiven a lot of things Waning, heaven is my witness. I cannot forgive anymore. For the well being of my daughter, our safety and my mental health, I must divorce."
On Waning’s face was terror. "He poisoned you!"
Mei Mei nodded. "I found out on the day I was admitted to the hospital. The reason why I was sickly all these years, losing weight, my hair and barely eating was because of poison he fed me. He probably thought that I would be dead by the time he came back to earth and Tang Yue could just become his wife naturally and they could raise their national space bastard without raising eyebrows."
Again, she sighed and then stood up. "Waning, there will be no truce. After everything that my parents have given to the empire without asking for anything, the royal family should stand aside or side with us. He is just one pilot, all I want is justice. There will be no truce."
