Chapter 397: Ichiro’s Purpose

As Drakzen stood before Vespera and me after killing the giant hydra in the center of the city, he took out a black potion vial from his pocket, which I recognized.

Before the devil could open the bottle’s cork, I pointed my finger at him and shot a thin light beam. Nonetheless, Drakzen used blood magic to cover his arm like armor and protect himself from my spell.

*Tsk, tsk* "Careful there. This vial is quite valuable," said Drakzen, clicking his tongue mockingly.

When the devil tried to open it again, both Vespera and I pointed our palms at him and started shooting different magic projectiles that we could quickly cast, interrupting him from absorbing the hydra’s corpse.

During our barrage of attacks, I stopped momentarily and used the dust cloud that had been raised by Vespera’s attacks to get closer to Drakzen.

Reaching with my bo, I waved it like a baseball bat and tried hitting Drakzen in the face, but he reacted and protected it with his forearm, which was clad in blood armor.

*Sigh* "How annoying..." the devil commented as he took a long step back to avoid my attack.

"Says you!" I exclaimed, fusing my bo with phoenix fire as I kept following him.

Suddenly, Vespera appeared behind Drakzen and tried stabbing him with her spider legs, making the devil turn around to protect himself.

’Now!’ I thought.

Relishing the opportunity that Drakzen turned away for a brief second, I raised my bo and went for an overhead attack that got him in the back of his head, followed by a swipe of Vespera with her spider legs that flung the devil into an iron wall.

"Heh, heheheh..." Drakzen’s chuckle could be heard coming from the cloud of dust.

"Man, I really wanted to get the Demon Queen Spider..." he muttered, prompting my companion and I to keep our defensive stance.

"Since I’m running out of time, I’ll have to cut this meeting short," the devil continued.

Not knowing what he was about to do, I launched myself at Drakzen with my bo in hand, fused with phoenix fire, but I was interrupted by something massive landing between us.

When I stopped and raised my gaze, I found myself right in front of a massive dark gray bear with glowing red eyes, growling with anger as drool dripped down its mouth.

"Callisto, play with them for a bit..." Drakzen commanded, making the bear let out a deafening roar that echoed all over the city’s center.

The bear he called Callisto was two times the size of Athena, who was already pretty big, and as the roar made me halt my movements for a second, I quickly snapped out of it and jumped back.

As soon as my feet got me out of my position, I noticed the bear’s claws passing right in front of me.

’I get it. He uses the roar to stun his enemies and then attacks them...’ I thought.

I gazed back at Drakzen and saw him slowly walking toward the hydra’s corpse, so I ignored the bear and tried to catch up to him. Still, it was to no avail, as the bear just kept getting in between us and blocking my way.

At one point, Vespera appeared above the bear and kicked him in the head with a force that shattered the ground below them. Thinking that Drakzen was distracted, I rushed towards him once again.

Nevertheless, when I was mere feet away from him, a trap activated, and red spikes of solidified blood came out of the ground, stabbing one of my legs.

"I’m not dumb enough to underestimate you, Ichiro..." Drakzen said with a serious tone.

"In fact, I respect you quite a lot... But I have my mission to complete, and you have yours," the devil said, opening the black vial and producing a black mist that started absorbing the blood of the hydra’s corpse.

’My mission, huh?’ I thought, not entirely comprehending what he meant.

When I was first sent to this new world, Phelena told me that there was something she wanted me to do, but she never specified what it was.

I figured I would find out eventually the longer I lived in this world, and for some time, I thought that getting rid of the devils was the mission that Phelena gave me.

However, if the goddess wanted me to eradicate them all, then it would be impossible since I would have to kill Jackson and Nessa, too, and they were not bad people—they were my friends.

As I traveled around the world and discovered the history of the past reincarnators, I noticed that all of them fought against the devils, but none of them talked about it in the notes they left behind.

"It’s funny how you just talk without knowing anything about me..." I muttered, using my hand to shatter the blood spike that was still stabbing my thigh.

"Hmm?" Drakzen hummed as he shut closed the vial with the cork.

"You idiot. I don’t even know what my purpose of being here is—What the hell do you know about it!?" I angrily said.

"You... What are you talking about?" Drakzen asked, confused at my words.

"Let me make it clear. I’ve been doing whatever I wanted this whole time. I couldn’t care less if this was my mission or not..." I replied, making Drakzen’s eyes widen with a mixture of shock and surprise

Before the devil could say something back, we were interrupted by a massive explosion around the gates to the center of the city, which confused me since the gate was already open.

As we both turned to look at the black smoke coming from the side, I recognized the MP that was approaching our location.

’Athena?’ I thought, feeling like the explosion had been caused by my infernal bear companion.

"Heh, well then, good talk. I’m not one to interfere with family reunions, though," Drakzen said, taking out a small orb from his pocket and shattering it, making him disappear from the scene.
