Chapter 454: The Last Chat

After using the gem-link to stop Xalathas from summoning more hordes of demons into the world, the three devils in front of us seemed unbothered by my actions.

I thought that they would at least look a bit surprised or angry, but it was clear that the devils were expecting me to use the gem all this time.

"Excellent, Ichiro. Putting your life on the line is what this is all about..." Drakzen commented.

When I threw the gem at the portal, I could feel as if there was an invisible cord around my chest that was linked to the stone.

Drakzen quickly explained that my life had been used as the catalyst for the gem, so if I died, they could reverse the stone’s effects, which would allow them to bring even more demons to our world.

"I’m not planning on dying..." I muttered, glaring at Drakzen.

"I just want to end this so I can relax with my wife," I continued, getting ready to rush in for an attack.

However, before I could take a step forward, Xalathas calmly stood up and walked behind the throne, keeping my team in suspense for a few seconds.

"There is no reason to be here..." The demon king muttered, stepping onto a small circular platform that made his body shine for a second before disappearing.

"A teleportation device?" I wondered aloud, noticing that the magic looked quite similar to my own teleportation spell.

Without saying a word, Agares grinned and followed the demon king onto the platform, leaving Drakzen alone with me and my team.

"You guys go ahead..." I muttered to my team, keeping my gaze on Drakzen.

"Are you sure?" Melina asked.

"Yeah. I’ll be there in a minute," I replied.

For some strange reason, I could tell that Drakzen wanted to say something, but I didn’t want the demons to be away from our sight for too long, so I decided I would hear him out quickly.

As my team walked past Drakzen with expressions that showed disdain for him, he kept a soft, fake smile on his face.

My team stepped on the same platform that Agares and the king had used, and after they disappeared from my sight, Drakzen revealed that the device would take them to the 100th floor.

"Is there something you want to say to me?" I asked with a severe tone and a sharp, unmoving gaze.

"This is the last time we’ll chat, so I thought I would ask you something," Drakzen replied.

"Why do you fight, Ichiro? You, who were brought here from another world... Caring for groups of people you don’t even know—What’s the point?" Drakzen asked, and somehow, it felt like it was the first genuine question that he asked me without a sarcastic tone.

"The point? It’s simple, really... I died in my previous world with the only wish that I could see my wife one more time," I said.

"I was given all this power with the expectations that I would use it correctly and follow the mission given to me by Phelena..."

"Honestly, I couldn’t get myself to care for the supposed mission that much at first, so I decided to go for a more selfish approach," I continued.

Drakzen inquisitively placed a hand on his chin and hummed with curiosity as if urging me to finish.

"I’m following the mission because I want to keep living and traveling with my wife and my companions—Nothing more, nothing less..." I commented.

"Of course, that doesn’t mean I don’t care about all the friends I’ve made in my journey. Even good demons should live a happy life," I explained, thinking about Jackson and Nessa.

*Sigh* "I see... That’s somewhat disappointing," Drakzen replied.

"A sage so powerful with no ambitions to conquer... If you had chosen to dominate the world, I would have followed you without a doubt," he continued. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

"That sounds like a big responsibility. Do I look like I want to govern anyone?" I sarcastically asked.

"It is the fate of the strong to rule over the weak," Drakzen replied.

"That’s just in the demon world. Fate isn’t something set in stone..." I refuted his comment.

The devil nodded with understanding, saying that he respected that side of me, though it felt weird being praised by Drakzen. Still, the concept of being powerful without having incredibly high ambitions wasn’t something he could comprehend.

"I pity you, Drakzen..." I said, making him sharpen his look with interest.

"Pity me? Let me hear why, then," He said with a forced smile.

"You’ll never know what it’s like to fight for someone or something that you truly care about..." I explained.

"You only think about conquering the world while at the same time turning it into a wasteland—all because your demonic instincts don’t let you act otherwise," I continued.

"Do you see now how stupid and pointless your objective looks from my perspective?" I asked, leaving Drakzen silent for a few seconds.

"You are right..." He muttered, making me flinch in surprise since I wasn’t expecting him to agree.

"It is unfortunate that I wasn’t one of the rare demons who was born with emotions. Even so, I can’t deny my own ambitions," Drakzen calmly explained.

"Hmm, then I suppose our chat is over," I replied.

"Yes, it was a good talk, though," He said, turning around and walking towards the teleporting platform.

After he disappeared, I followed along and halted my steps before the platform for a brief moment.

Drakzen had always been a talkative devil, and most of the times we spoke, I was annoyed by his sarcasm and the way he downplayed the demons’ actions as if they were natural.

However, I could sense a strange air of envy when he spoke about the devils who were able to feel human emotions, like Jackson and Nessa.

The demons’ instincts were to kill and conquer, but Drakzen had an evident interest in understanding how these human emotions felt. Still, there was nothing I could do for him.

’Focus, Ichiro... I can’t think about all of this at such times,’ I thought, taking a deep breath and stepping onto the teleporter to the 100th floor.
