Chapter 45: Labels and Acceptance

Arren unknowingly reached their garden. He looked around, and when he saw no one around, he sat down on the grass and sighed in relief. His hand touched his chest, and he felt how his heartbeat gradually calmed down.

This was so crazy. Spade’s effect on him appeared to be bigger than he initially thought.

When he first flirted with Spade and thought he was a royal investigator, Arren was attracted by his appearance alone. He thought that the alpha was a good catch because of it. Who wouldn’t be fascinated by that perfect and sexy figure of Spade?

And as days went by, his interest and curiosity seemed to be increasing each day. Especially when the alpha attended to him and accompanied him as he was feeling lost and wanted someone to talk to.

Arren realized that he might be truly falling to the alpha. But then... he discovered that he was an important character he had been avoiding ever since he remembered his previous life. His mind and heart became confused, and for a moment, Arren hesitated. What should he do now? That was the question he was always running from.

Looking at a new perspective, Arren hadn’t experienced love before, and even the idea of having a crush had never appeared in his mind. His heart’s condition in his previous life was so bad that a slight stimulation could lead to him being sent into an emergency.

A heart transplant was actually one of the options his parents had considered before, but the doctor said that the percentage of heart failure was extremely high. Since he already experienced a heart transplant when he was young.

The romance was a luxury he would never afford. So, he had no clue what it was like to fall in love even though he had watched and read about this genre before.

As a matter of fact, even watching strongly stimulating movies were forbidden to him. And when he was in the hospital for the last time, he thought of indulging himself and reading a lot of online novels.

So, this feeling was a first for him. It also had a barrier that he was hesitant to cross. Perhaps as he had been escaping for years, it also became a habit and his most logical reaction once he finally met the crucial characters.

Arren let himself be dragged by his thoughts as he sat there on the grass comfortably. Now that he did meet one and... even flirted with him, Arren’s mind became conflicted. Or, more like, he started to have doubts about what his purpose actually.

In the beginning, he only wanted to live peacefully. He knew what the plot was and how dangerous this world was. So, his main goal was to live his second life more carefree and to do what he couldn’t in his past life. And somehow, along the way... his years of escape had unknowingly become a part of his life.

He unconsciously bit his lips, and the glow in his eyes dimmed; he was now confused. A lot of thoughts surface in his mind and his years in this book world.

In his absentminded posture, Arren subconsciously raised his head, and there... standing at the entrance of the garden and not far away from him, was the person who made him doubt his reasons.

Arren remained motionless, staring at this figure as if his eyes could only see him. The way his amber-colored eyes glow in their natural authoritative manner. His stature and upright posture convey his dominance. This man...

Then something clicked and flashed within him.

His eyes flickered with an unending emotion as if he had been enlightened. This fervent change could not escape the alpha’s eyes, which were looking at him intently from a distance.

Arren had a realization then... Yes, this man, Spade Remmington... was a real person.

Arren’s unblinking eyes stared at the alpha, his breath hitched, and the sudden realization made him lost for a moment.

From the day he knew that he had reincarnated in the book world, Arren unknowingly still treated this world in his view as a reader. He might become a part of it, but inside of him, Arren always looked at everyone from the perspective of someone who knew the real origin of the world.

Arren subconsciously labeled everyone based on their ’character’ in the book. Like how he never attended the banquets and avoided the palace like the plague because he knew all the ’plot points’ happened there and the ’main characters’ lived there.

In a way, Arren labeled himself as an extra, as did everyone else in the world. The extras, cannon fodder, supporting characters, antagonists, and even the main and important characters. This could explain why he was hesitant to get involved in the plot.

If the plot were ruined, his label for everyone else and himself would also be ruined.

Arren’s heartbeats raced as he looked at the alpha approaching him, and his mind suddenly became clear.

Right, he wasn’t just a reader anymore, but a real person living in this world. And this world was no longer just a book world to him; it was real-world.

So, labeling others on their character wouldn’t work anymore. While it would be advantageous, Arren needed to stop enclosing himself in order to progress and clear his confusion.

With all these running through Arren’s mind, as though a burden was lifted in his heart. He smiled; bright phoenix eyes gave a luster that would be engraved fully in Spade’s heart.

He didn’t get up from his seat, only raising his head and keeping his gaze fixed on the alpha. Arren seemed to want to imprint his image and this memory on his mind.

The alpha also crouched and stared at him. Their eyes were locked on each other. Somehow, Spade sensed the different way Arren treated him with his stares. Hesitations were gone, and he was fully... accepted?

If Arren could hear Spade’s thoughts, he would immediately agree with them. He really did accept his situation and the alpha in front of him.

He didn’t have any qualms about the ’role’ Spade had in the book. Spade was no longer just an important book character in Arren’s eyes; he was his potential alpha, nothing else.

In the first place, Arren was unconcerned about Spade’s position as Emperor in the world. The only reason for his confusion was Spade’s role in the book.

"Are you done talking with my father?" Arren inquired softly, and it wasn’t at all respectful to a monarch, more intimate to a lover.

As if all of his so-called rage had vanished into thin smoke.

Spade sensed this change, however, and didn’t comment on it. In fact, he quite liked this tone.

Spade smiled, his eyes softened, and he nodded. "Hm, we’re done talking," said the deep voice in Arren’s ears.

Arren locked his gaze on the alpha, then laughed. He couldn’t help himself, and he wanted to laugh. It was a carefree and burden-free laugh. Spade let him and didn’t interrupt him. He only gazed at him fondly as a smile shone in his eyes.

In the end, they needed to get out of that bubble. Spade was in a hurry to get to the palace for something urgent, and they didn’t talk that much.

But the smile they gave each other was still somewhat ambiguous, it was comfortable, and Arren really liked this stage. He wasn’t in a hurry to confirm their relationship yet.

Arren stood outside their gate with his father as they watched Spade’s car gradually leave their sight. As usual, Spade didn’t bring any convoy with him and went into their mansion in a simple SUV car.

As Arren watched the car from afar, his father talked to him.

"You can visit your school now," his father stated calmly, but for Arren, this statement wasn’t simple at all.

He instantly glanced at his father; his jaw slanted a bit. Did he hear it right? Was he off grounded?

Before he could say anything, his father continued. His eyes were still calm. He wasn’t looking at him, but at a distance, where Spade’s car was no longer visible.

"You would have a bunch of bodyguards with you," his father glanced at him intently.

Arren was too excited to notice, so what if he was followed by bodyguards again? At the very least, he could go out now. Fucking finally!

He smiled widely, "Thank you, dad. I’ll promise I will never leave the bodyguard’s watch. You can rest assured."

His tone was sincere. He knew the bodyguards were there to protect him, and Arren had been taught a lesson the last time. The more complex issues would only pile up in front of him, especially now.

His father nodded, smiled at Arren, and stroked his hair. "I know, son, and... I trust that you would, after all..." your bodyguards this time would be assigned by His Majesty himself.

The Duke didn’t continue and only smiled at his son. However, he would let his son be happy and not ruin his mood with what he witnessed earlier. His son and His Majesty seemed... to get along really well.
