Chapter 420: Limitations of the Time

Genghis Khan created the foundation in which his sons and grandsons would use to then conquer the world

Genghis Khan is a military commander that rise from nothing.

He is not like Alexander the Great who has his father to pave the way for him.

Alexander started off with a very powerful and capable military that was perfectly poised for conquest.

Thanks to Philip, when Alexander assumed the throne, the military machine is well oiled to perfection

This is not to deny Alexander the Great many military brilliance but to not credit his father for his earlier conquest and at which he could quickly expand is disingenuous

Genghis Khan is not like these other military leaders that have everything handed to them

He had to be the one that created it. A trial of right and errors

He created his own method of management. And promoting people based on merit and not nobility is a revolutionary concept to the world back then

Even when, when Aeryon is the one doing it, he knows how revolutionary it is. He knows it from the loyalty of his men.

Even now, in Yan dynasty, only the scholar class controls the promotion and upward social class.

One could basically say that the battle of these warlords is nothing but the battle of aristocratic families.

Genghis Khan, in his world, in the Steppe, where everything had to be found out by himself, he innovated and even included both technology and skilled people into his army

Not based on pedigree but merit

He did not mind his enemies serving under him and trusted them

Mongols did not start as the pinnacle of military excellence. Genghis modified his army and his way of governing people as he grow more experienced and more powerful

But the real edge that Genghis Khan tribe have over other steppe tribes was that, his tribe have self-cohesion

Granted it meant everyone having to get together and hash out their differences when the khan dies but at least the empire survives and did not fracture like the empire of Alexnader which fractures almost immediately after his death

The fracture of Genghis khan empire took a long time and if any of those rulers have enough strength, the empire of Genghis would have lasted even longer

And in shirty even though the Yuan fell in the Central Plains, the remnants of the Mongol empire stills rules in other parts of the world.

Aeryon wanted to be better.

Better than Genghis.

He wanted to cut short the time he needed to unite the Steppe. He wanted to create a better world, something that Genghis Khan probably did not have in mind when he started conquering and pillaging all over the world

"This is because the limitation of their times" Aeryon mutters to himself while sighing

Genghis, no matter how brilliant he is as a statesman and as a strategist, a governor and a king, or an emperor, he is constrained by the ideas of the time

He became all of the way history described him not because he wanted to create a better world or benefit the people of the world, or bring peace or any of those value stuff. Because those values are not the values of a Mongol warriors.

Genghis is born in harsh situation and the way he treated life, he treated it harshly. And so, it brought about a generation of harsh men

Aeryon is basically replicating many of Genghis Khan method. But his way, and Genghis Khan way is different

He wanted to create something else. The legacy he wanted to leave the world...would be a shining one.

That even if one day, he falls, people would want to emulate him.

Aeryon sighed.

"I have too many dreams" But he smiles.

Before, these dreams are unattainable. But now, now he sees the path to where this dream could be realized and that is good enough for him

He put down the report and close his eyes for a second.

He massages it a back

Then opening it back up he took another report but he only needs to read one line o the report and he put the report back down.

All of the reports around him are mostly military report.

The report itself is very unprofessional.

But it get the gist of the information that he needed to know and that is the most important part

"What should I do with the Nogai tribe?"

He sighed when thinking about this tribe. It’s not that he didn’t know what to do.

It is more like he is thinking about what is the best course of action to take and how to take it

Norgai son of Baha the chief of the Nogai tribe had surrendered to him.

Surrender.

This is what shocked him.

He did not even attack Nogai tribe and he is not even planning to attack

But Norgai come to him, saying that he wanted to speak to him

Aeryon at that time is quite wary. Norgai come with his soldiers but he is not coming to attack him

At that time, it is reasonable for Aeryon to be suspicious. After all, Norgai is the neighbour of the Wustkazan on the north

Aeryon thought that Norgai come to him to know what he is planning next or maybe to persuade him to stop or maybe even to threaten him

He was ready for all this

What he was not ready about was that when they talk to each other, Aeryon got the feeling that Norgai did not have an of those intention

Instead, Norgai shocked him by kneeling down to him and bow his head towards him and loudly proclaimed that he would like to follow him in creating immortal achievement

It took him some time to make sense of that scene in his mind before he finally understand that Norgai was surrendering to him

And the next moment, he felt joy.

This is the first time that someone surrendered even before fighting with him. It is something that he wanted form the tribes of the Great Steppe for a long time

Even Durka fight with him first before surrendering to him.

As for Khagai tribe, he is more of a shareholders believing in his vision and submitting to him in that kind of capacity like a partner

But...this is the first stime a chief lowered themselves to truly submit to him.

"And that has delayed me" Aeryon mutters as he shakes his head. This is what happened a few days ago.

And this is the reason why he is still in the Wustkazan region and did not return to Brolgadhr tribe.

Aeryon has think for many days on how to treat the Nogai tribe.

And what he decided on was to honour him.

Aeryon actually has been waiting for such a person to a papers.

If these chief knows the situation and quickly surrender to him before fighting, it would not only save time, it would save resources and the lives of his men.

The only reason why Aeryon find it hard was that the chief never surrender even if the circumstance is against them.

Even as small tribe would want to fight his generals before surrendering

It is like this convention and ritual that has to be performed before the surrender could be done.

In the eyes of the surrendering tribe, if they surrender without a fight, they would be looked down upon by their conquerors.

It is also a way of showing their fighting spirit to their conqueror. Yan people and Roma people would not understand this

Even Aeryon did not understand this. In his world, the Steppe people might fight to the end but there is no such ritual before surrender.

When an overwhelming force is about to smash you down, the people of the Steppe in his original world would always surrender.

When Genghis Khan come to your small tribe with ten thousand horsemen behind him, the chief would quickly surrender

But in this world something very different is happening.

If you brought tens of thousands of horsemen, while they do have the desire to surrender, they have to finish this ritual firs.

They would ask for a duel, asking for a great warrior of the conquering tribe to fight with their tribe warrior.

The battle would not be to the death

And that is when the force is truly have a great gap. If it did not have a large gap, then, a few battle would be executed before the loser surrender

This is wasting time in Aeryon eyes. But he alone could not change the culture.

He could just slaughtered any enemies like this but that would only create more resistance. But if he started doing this, he would not be able to stop

The resistance to his rule would become even harder and wherever he goes, he would eb resisted.

It would not be like it is today, where the tribes would thought to surrender.

This is the difference in policy of treatment of the defeated soldiers that differentiate chief like Aeryon and chief like Dama.
